Haridwar to become backbone of state: Arya
Tribune News Service

Haridwar, March 3
Acknowledging Haridwar’s contribution to the development and economy of Uttarakhand apart from being a world-renowned religious city, Congress state chief Yashpal Arya has remarked that soon Haridwar will be the backbone of this hill state owing to its agro-industrial contribution.

Arya, who was in the city attending various functions, stated that Haridwar now assumed a proportion which was not found worldwide as it’s now a conglomeration of religious significance and industrial revolution making it a unique city providing religious solace on one side while employment on the other.

On the ongoing Maha Kumbh, the Congress state chief was quite unhappy over the working of the mela administration, especially the restrictions and prohibitions during the first Shahi Snan of Maha Shivratri.

“If patients can’t be taken to hospital, traders can’t go to their shops and locals can’t roam in their colonies, how can the holy bath be termed as successful? The mela administration should take suggestions from all quarters of society and implement these,” said Arya.

Arya was also quite vociferous on the allotment of hrdro-electricity projects in the state and said the state government to provide benefits to the mafias had violated all rules and procedures.

He said the Congress party was taking seriously this issue and would be starting a statewide agitation from March 6.

Arya said Haridwar district would play a pivotal role and, thus, major stress was in the district to bag maximum assembly seats, especially after the new delimitation which had increased the number of assembly seats in the constituency.

Amid expensive living, the Union Budget has failed to provide assurance to people of Uttarakhand. For the development of the hill state, this seems to act as a hurdle and is not providing any kind of relief.

These were the words of Uttarakhand Human Resource and Economic Management Development Foundation (UHREMD) members while evaluating the Budget here today.

Further elaborating on the Budget, they expressed discontentment over the Center’s refusal to extend the industrial package, which will now automatically lead to migration and unemployment.

In the name of environment, Rs 500 crore has been issued for cleaning the Ganga, but the future still looks bleak for the state.

“Prices of petrol have once again created hue and cry and in a nut shell this Budget is certainly not an aam aadmi-friendly Budget,” asserted the members.

MPs not to be allowed in Haridwar, says BJP
Tribune News Service

Haridwar, March 3
On the issue of rising inflation and price rise of essential commodities, the BJP district unit has warned all five parliamentarians of Uttarakhand of not allowing them to enter the district if they keep mum on the issue.

BJP district unit president Om Prakash Jam Dagni stated that though all MPs from Pauri Garhwal, Tehri Garhwal, Almora, Nainital and Haridwar belonged to the ruling UPA, they had not spoken a single word over inflation and even terrorism, which did not augur well for the state.

“Is this the responsible behaviour of these representatives? They don’t seem to be even a bit perturbed over the common man’s problems and if they don’t change their attitude, we will not allow them to enter Haridwar”.

“Either give us answers to our questions or don’t come here,” warned Jamdagni.

While Yuva Morcha convener Naresh Sharma related the high price rise to the wrong policies of the UPA government that only caters to the rich and affluent people.

Cornering the Congress for its anti-Uttarakhand attitude, Yuva Morcha district head Rajeev Sharma said by not extending the industrial package to this hilly state the Congress had revealed its real face.

Meanwhile, against the UPA government’s economic policies the BJP would be carrying out a protest rally in Haldwani on March 14 and also make similar protests in other districts.

Roorkee, March 3
Following protests by farmers’ bodies, Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited has decided not to go ahead with the privatisation of its distribution system in Roorkee circle for the timebeing. Instead the department will be bringing about changes in its working to bring down the distribution losses here.

An official said the distribution losses in the circle were around 85 per cent, which caused the authorities to think on the lines of bringing private player here. The second one under consideration of being privatised was Udham Singh Nagar circle in the state.

Newly appointed Deputy General Manager (Roorkee) MC Gupta said the department’s priority was to generate the revenue by stopping the power pilferage.

“As power theft on a large scale here was the major concern of the government, our stress is to bring down the figures (of power theft) drastically as early as possible. Working in the direction, we have constituted extra vigilance teams, besides thrusting responsibilities on every official of the department with certain targets,” said Gupta.

Introduction of telephone line for registering theft complaints was a step in the direction. This month over 200 cases of power theft have been registered, which would bring in around Rs 5 crore revenue for the government, added Gupta.

The DGM also said the private contractors, who had been running power sub-stations in rural areas, could be removed as they were found least bothered about the power theft in their respective areas.

Gupta also sought public help in case of rostering and power cuts. “The people should not hold protests every now and then in case some problem occurs in their area. We are in the mode of improvement and the results will come out soon,” asserted Gupta.

“The outstanding of the department in Roorkee circle is around whopping Rs 160 crore,” he said, which he aimed to realise from the defaulters as soon as possible.
