Toll tax soon on
Noida-Gt Noida e-way
Greater Noida, March 3 Under the agreement, J.P. Group will receive the toll tax for the next 36 years on the Expressway. An agreement for this was signed by J.P. Group and Taj Expressway in 2003. According to sources at the time of commissioning of Taj Expressway, Noida-Greater Noida Expressway will also be handed over to J.P. Group. It may be added that the J.P. Group has been allotted 500 acres of land on the sides of Taj Expressway for constructing this highway on its own cost. With the commissioning of Taj Expressway, users of this highway will have to pay a toll tax and simultaneously a toll tax will become applicable on use of Noida-Greater Noida Expressway also, it is learnt. A toll tax plaza is being constructed near Kondli on Expressway which will ultimately be made into an 8-lane expressway as against the present 4-lane road. It may be recalled that Noida and Greater Noida authorities had jointly constructed Noida-Greater Noida Expressway in 2000. Twenty-km-long length of Expressway out of total 23 km lies in Noida while 3 km falls in Greater Noida. It had been constructed at a cost of Rs 18 crore. According to sources, the rates of toll tax on the Expressway have been decided along with the toll tax rates on Yamuna Expressway. Apart from Noida-Greater Noida Expressway and Yamuna Expressway, a toll tax will be payable on the inter-change and overbridges, it is learnt. Vehicles will have to pay toll tax at four places from Noida to Agra. Each plaza will receive toll tax for its own segment only, the officials clarified. |
Boards: Some jittery, some cool
New Delhi, March 3 While class X students tend to be relaxed this year, class XII students are on edge. The sheer number of students sitting the examination this year shows a marked increase of 8.72% over last year. The most significant changes have been for students facing their class X boards. Many of them tend to be satisfied with the changes. Gaurav Malhotra, a class X student of Vasant Valley School, says, “There is nothing to worry about this examination. I will worry when I get to class XII. This examination is cool, we will be graded and that’s exciting. What I like is that there will be no marks.” Another class X student Radhika Sharma from Springdales School, says, “I’ve been studying throughout the year and am not overly concerned. The first main paper is social science and though prepared, I will be having last-minute revision. In this grade system, so many kids will get A grades and the feeling is not something special like getting high marks or ranks.” There are mixed reactions from parents, many favouring a regular exam based on marks in class X, while some are satisfied with the changes. Anahita Sehgal, a parent, says, “My daughter is in class X and I have had to really push her to study and complete her course on time. With the new grade system, kids are not taking the boards as seriously as they should. I can’t say whether ending the old system is a good idea and I don’t know what these kids will do in class XII when they face a competitive board examination.” If class X students are taking it easy, the mood of class XII students is very different. They are stressed. Nandita Kapoor, a class XII student, says, “Our first paper was physics. I found it difficult though I prepared hard. Some of the questions were tricky.” Another class XII student Samir Sehgal says, “My first exam went off well. I am relieved though there is a lot more to prepare, the examination has just begun.” |

Help desks to give security to women
New Delhi, March 3 She said that the commission put help desks at railway stations, airports, hospitals, hotels to Games venues and places that would attract the maximum attention and response. If the idea clicked, the desks might stay even after the mega-event, she said. Singh said cases of women harassment would rise when an event of such magnitude took place but the DCW was braced up to deal with it. Foreign tourists are likely to arrive in large numbers to watch the spectacle. They are the most vulnerable. “Women from different countries will arrive in large numbers in the Capital and the gender desk will provide information and assistance to everyone, including the poor migrant labourer as well as foreign women delegates,” Singh said. The commission would inform tourists and players about the helpline numbers, she added. The gender desk will set a protocol for contractors to aid women laborers and also sensitise law enforcement agencies to deal with their complaints. Apart from working with identified agencies to orient them on gender-appropriate behaviour, the help desks will put a service providers’ network in place that would come handy during emergencies, she said. Volunteers from Games sites and groups like tour operators through the ministry of tourism will be specially trained for staffing at the desks. The decision to form the desk was declared in October 2009 but no set date was given to start its functioning. The idea for the formation of gender help desk in Delhi came after the DCW surveyed three countries — Canada, the UK and Australia where sports events were either held recently or were to be held soon. |
UGC to mull hike in posts of non-teaching staff in DU
New Delhi, March 3 After the implementation of 27 per cent OBC quota in DU, the university administration has increased seats for both students and teachers. But, DU has not advertised any new post for the non-teaching staff. Sources at the UGC said that the agenda of increasing the posts of non-teaching staff in DU would be put before a committee on March 10. There are chances that the UGC might approve the funds required for creating additional posts. The College Karamchari Union and DU have been demanding their pending arrears and an increase in the seats of non-teaching staff. “A total of 7,000 posts have been created for the teaching staff in the university that is also increasing the infrastructure by 54 per cent, but no seats have been created for the non-teaching staff,” said S.C. Joshi, general secretary of the union. The UGC chairperson has been assuring the university’s non-teaching of clearing their arrears in a few days. But the union is not ready to withdraw its agitation till a written assurance is provided to them. “We have been protesting for long. We want a written assurance from the chairperson,” said Joshi. |
Aspiring actor in jail for posing as politico’s son
New Delhi, March 3 Raj Dwivedi (28), who is pursing an acting course at Greater Kailash Academy here, shares his surname with senior Congress leader Janardhan Dwivedi. Raj allegedly used this connection and posed as the politician’s son. He spoke over phone to IOC president Suresh Kalmadi last Sunday, demanding 12 passes for the India-Pakistan hockey match. Kalmadi obliged, but his staff could spare only six VIP passes when Raj sent one Anand to his office to collect them. Raj sent Anand to Kalmadi’s office again for six more passes, but his staff got suspicious. Their doubts strengthened, as they questioned Anand. They then called the police. Anand is the head of the institute where Raj pursued acting course and knew a little of his background, said a police official. Anand was impressed with his political connection and had requested for the passes. Raj, a resident of Amethi in UP, is now behind bars. He has been accused of impersonating and cheating. He has confessed to the crime. A city court on Monday sent him to judicial custody. He is lodged in Tihar Jail. Raj called Kalmadi at his office and introduced him as Dwivedi’s son. Raj sent Anand to collect the passes. The police contacted Janardhan Dwivedi and he said that his son never asked for tickets and was not enrolled in any acting course. Then Raj was arrested. |
Traders pay up to avoid sealing
New Delhi, March 3 According to municipal officers, traders from various areas, particularly those under central zone, lined up before the building department office on Tuesday to pay dues. They said the drive had been deferred, as the civic body wanted to give defaulters an opportunity to clear their dues. The MCD has been sealing commercial establishments in the Capital after their owners failed to deposit the conversion charges. Earlier, officials had said that the drive would gain momentum after Holi. “Our focus is to collect conversion charges and not sealing properties. So, we are giving traders a chance to clear their dues,” an official said. “We will requisition security personnel and sealing will start from Wednesday in Rohini and south Delhi areas,” confirmed an official from south zone. The conversion charge is necessary for shops in stretches notified as commercial or mixed land use under MPD-2021. |
