Boy drowns in Panchsheel pit
New Delhi, March 2 While the locals alleged that the pit was dug by the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) for its pipe-laying project, the DJB has refuted the charges saying that it was dug by the DDA. Meanwhile, police has sought explanation from both the departments. “The victim Sonu, a resident of Chirag Dilli, went to have a bath with his friend after playing Holi when the incident took place. The boy took a bath in the water-filled pit, which was dug by some civic body near Lal Gumbad in the Panchsheel Enclave area when he accidentally fell into it. His friends called for help and tried to save him but they could not,” said the police. As per the fire department, the incident took place around 4 pm and they got a call around 4.30 pm. “It was a 20-ft-deep pit and our divers managed to fish out the body within minutes. However, he had died by then,” said a fire official. Police has registered a case of causing death due to negligence against the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) and the Delhi Development Authority (DDA). “A case has been registered and inquires are on to find the civic agency responsible for digging the pit. We have asked both the DJB and DDA to explain,” said HGS Dhaliwal, DCP (south). Even as police investigations are on, the DJB has refuted the charges against it. “We are not at all involved in digging work. This has nothing to do with the DJB. We have a pipeline there beneath the pit but no work was going on there,” said a DJB spokesperson adding that the DJB inspection has revealed that the pit was dug by the horticulture department of DDA. However, officials of DDA were not available for comment. Opposition leader V K Malhotra alleged that the incident is the testimony of “criminal negligence” on the part of DJB. “As per the statement of locals, the work of laying the water pipeline has been in progress for the last six months by the Project Division of DJB, but the work has not been completed till date. The DJB officials are trying to pin blame on DDA,” he said. |

BJP protests hike in oil prices
New Delhi, March 2 Carrying placards in their hands demanding withdrawal of the increased prices of petrol and diesel, the demonstrators marched towards Parliament. They even broke the police barricades. The police had to use water canons to control the agitating protestors. Addressing the demonstrators, Delhi BJP president Om Prakash Kohli said that due to steep hike in prices of petrol and diesel transportation would become more costly; loading and unloading of goods would become dearer and even commodities like milk, vegetables, grains would become more expensive. New Delhi, March 2 The court has, however, acquitted Munna and Jai Kishore, who were accused of being involved in ‘destruction of evidence’ and ‘keeping the stolen property’. Pushkin Chandra, 38, an employee with the United Nations Development Programme, was found dead along with his friend Kuldip at his residence in Anand Lok on the night of August 13, 2004. During the argument on quantum of sentence, the defence counsel held that the court must see the circumstances in which the murders took place and that Rekhwar is HIV positive and that his family would suffer harsher punishment. While convicting Rekhwar and Moti, the court relied on witness Hare Ram, the domestic help of Chandra’s father. Ram had identified both the accused as the people last seen with Chandra and Kuldip. According to the prosecution, Ram was the first to discover the bodies and the last to have seen the victims alive. He was one of the 37 prosecution witnesses who deposed before the court. Tainted teacher to be kept off exams
New Delhi, March 2 The college’s governing body met today but could not proceed with its agenda and was adjourned as quorum could not be completed. However, the college principal, Dr Hari Om, gave a written assurance to the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) that the teacher, Dr V.Narang, would not be “associated with the practical/internal assessment for the forthcoming examination in any manner”. The union has been agitating against the teacher. Four students from the zoology department of the college, which is part of Delhi University, had accused Narang of sexually harassing them. The allegation first came to light around seven months back and more girl students came out against him. All the four girls are pursuing B.Sc. courses, but in different years. DUSU’s vice-president Kriti Wadhera claimed that there could be more victims who were not ready to come out against him. The teacher had reportedly threatened many of them that he would fail them in internal assessment. Even as the governing body meeting was going on under the chairmanship of Rajesh Bhan, DUSU office-bearers held a demonstration outside the college premises, demanding that the guilty professor be suspended immediately. Narang has kept quiet over the allegations and could not be reached for comments despite several attempts. The complainants had alleged that one associate of the accused professor asked them to apologise to him in front of the whole class. Not revealing the names of the complainants, the DUSU office-bearer said the professor used to visit the houses of many girls to give coaching. The governing body meeting today concluded with the college principal signing a written assurance to the student leaders that the accused would not be allowed to mark the examination sheets of complainants. The college has decided to call another GB meeting soon. Today’s meeting was also attended by former DUSU president and lawyer Nupur Sharma. Meanwhile, in a letter sent by the DUSU vice-president to the vice-chancellor, proctor, director of South Campus, chairman of governing body and apex committee on sexual harassment, the union maintained that a university-level agitation would be launched if the college administration failed to conduct an impartial investigation into the matter. |
