Nursing institute flouting fire-safety norms
Ludhiana, March 2
In an utter violation of building bylaws, the Guru Teg Bahadur Institute of Nursing, Shastri Nagar, has yet to get no objection certificate (NOC) from the Fire Brigade Department here. Information gathered under the RTI from the Fire Brigade Department on February 22, 2010 reveals that the management of nursing institute did not take clearance certificate by the department (a copy of which is with the Tribune). The management seems to be putting the lives of hundreds of students and employees at risk in absence of fire safety measures.

Residents pull down boundary wall in colony to gain passage
Ludhiana, March 2
Residents of the Haibowal Khurd locality pulled down boundary wall in C Block of Rishi Valmiki Nagar to gain passage to the main road in Ludhiana on Sunday. Peeved over the construction of a boundary wall in the C block of Maharishi Valmiki Nagar, a posh residential colony developed by the Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT) in the mega city, certain unidentified persons pulled down the wall on the night of February 27.

Man nabbed for stealing hotel items
Ludhiana, March 2
A vigilant hotel management nabbed one member of the gang of thieves, who had become a constant headache for the hotel authorities across the city with their repeated theft incidents. The thieves were caught stealing LCD TV sets and bed sheets on close circuit television cameras (CCTVs) installed in the hotel.

Though he killed his daughter’s lover, Gurvinder Singh could not destroy the boy’s eyes that would remain alive even after his death. The eyes of the 22-year-old innocent murder victim, Prabhdeep Singh, were donated to two young people who can now see the world through them.

Board exams begin
No copying case reported on first day

Anxious moments were witnessed by scores of students and their parents as class VIII and XII board exams of the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) started here today. While class VIII students appeared for their mathematics exam; students of class XII appeared for their Punjabi paper.

Dr Ramanjit Kaur, assistant professor of agronomy at the PAU, has been awarded with the “ISWS Best Thesis Award” for the year 2009-10 for her doctoral research by the Indian Society of Weed Science (ISWS).

City soaks in Holi colours
Ludhiana, March 2
Soaked in 'gulal' and swaying to the tunes of famous Bollywood numbers, Ludhianvis came out onto the streets on Monday to celebrate Holi. As the day progressed, 'rang', 'bhaang' and fun flooded all corners of the city. Holi parties were held in almost every nook and corner of the city, with various clubs, youth and ladies' groups and residential areas organising their own little dos to celebrate the festival of colours.

Rs 100 crore demanded from Centre for ponds’ project

Manpreet Singh Ayali, chairman of Zila Parishad, today said the Punjab Government had launched the Water Supply Project for providing safe and quality drinking water to villages of the state with the financial assistance of Rs1,280 crore from the World Bank and under the National Rural Drinking Water Supply Programme of the Government of India.
