Farmers fair begins at Pant varsity
Nainital, March 7 Vice-Chancellor of the university Dr BS Bisht, while describing the farmers and students as two main clients of his institution, said, “For the sake of farmers, we produce high quality seeds and planting materials besides location-specific and advanced agriculture technology.” Dr Bisht highlighted the recent achievements of the university and mentioned about four new and improved varieties of vegetables, developing a new ‘ratoon manager' for sugarcane crop and significant research work in improvement of pulses. He also gave an insight into the ground-level technology transfer work being done through Krishi Vikas Kendras (KVKs) in 11 districts of the state. Dr Bisht also announced the excellent placement of university students in reputed organisations such as Tata Consulting Services (TCS), Oriental Bank of Commerce (OBC) and others recently. The Vice-Chancellor said, “We are in the golden jubilee year of the university, having completed 50 years of agriculture education, research and extension education which has revolutionised the agriculture sector in India.” Director, Extension Education, Dr YPS Dabas remarked that the Kisan Mela provides a platform as well as a unique opportunity for valuable interaction and discussion between scientists, farmers and representatives of agro-industrial firms. “While the farmers get customised solution to their specific problems, the scientists get the feedback on the agriculture technology,” he said. The event was formally inaugurated by Minister of State for Education Govind Singh Bisht who described it as a Krishi Kumbh which has attracted a large number of farmers hoping to solve their problems related to farming. “The ongoing Maha Kumbh at Haridwar is exclusively denoted for the welfare of farmers,” he said while reiterating the resolve of his government to make farming more profitable and risk-free, Bisht pointed that the university is known for its high-quality seeds and efforts should be made to make Uttarakhand a ‘Seed State’. He added, “The university scientists should focus their research efforts on farming in different ecological zones while serving the farmers of remote rural and hilly areas”. Agribusiness firms have put up attractive and colourful displays showcasing the latest and best in every related sphere of agriculture. The university has made special arrangements for local transportation and stay of the visiting farmers at the fair. |

Hinduja brothers to contribute to state development
Dehradun, March 7 Hinduja brothers expressed their desire to invest in medical and health sectors in the state. They said doctors at Hinduja hospitals would also be rendering their services in Uttarakhand. They described their commitment towards the establishment of the World Knowledge Centre here. They also favoured development of roads on build-operate basis and also expressed willingness to invest in the power sector. Gopichand Hinduja said industry was looking at Uttarakhand with much hope as the state was rendering adequate promotion of industries. He said their concern Ashok Leyland in Pant Nagar too had encouraging experience in the state. Welcoming the proposals put forward by the Hindujas, Dr Nishank reaffirmed his government’s commitment for development of the state. The Chief Minister said the government was working to identify new tourist areas to promote eco-tourism in the state. |

Ex-Air Chief Marshal Suri visits RIMC
Dehradun, March 7 With such an interactive session, he made a mark in everybody’s heart by his thoughts on spirituality, secularism and hard work by narrating anecdotes and sharing his experiences with them. He reiterated the necessity of prayer for the cadets. He stated that he prayed in nine languages in the morning and that was the basic essence of human life. He strongly believes in spirituality as it had an edge over narrow religious outlook. He talked about “Right living in society - Values in action”, commonality of enunciation of different faiths, religious harmony and tolerance among people of all religions. He averred that right education was based on values and character. The first batch of women Air Force officers was commissioned by him as he is a staunch supporter of women empowerment. Born on July 26, 1933, Suri became the Chief of Air Staff of the Indian Air Force on August 1, 1991. Alumnus of the famous Royal Indian Military College, Dehradun, he was a part of the first course of the Joint Services Wing (1), the present-day National Defence Academy, Pune. During the 1965 Indo-Pak war, Suri was selected to lead the detachment from No. 20 Hawker Hunter Squadron and he flew several sorties during the war. In 1969, he was awarded the Vayu Sena Medal for his contributions and devotion to service. Air Chief Marshal Suri, PVSM, AVSM and VM, retired from the service on July 31, 1993. His interests now lie in the promotion of spirituality and religious studies, which do not have a bias to parochialism. Officiating Commandant Lt Col Rajesh Nathawat gave the vote of thanks. He thanked Air Chief Marshal Suri for interacting with the cadets and explaining as to what is life all about. Other dignitaries present were Sq Ldr YS Panghal, Lt Cdr Chakraborty, Maj SR Sahu, KS Ahlawat, PK Sharma, CS Vishwakarma and DN Thapliyal. |

Cong accuses govt of scam in power

Arya, the Congress leadership charged that 56 power project in the state had been allocated to various private parties for development in a manner that was not transparent. He said the government was answerable to people of the state for squandering away the precious natural resource base of the state. Arya said the Congress would launch a statewide agitation on this issue. The Congress party has launched an attack on the government over the issue for the past 20 days and is taking the matter before the public through
demonstrations. Nishank on the other hand has denied the charges. In a media interaction in Dehradun a fortnight back, he had said he was ready for a probe from any agency in the world since all procedures and processes while allotting the projects were completely transparent. He had said a total of 56 projects, having a capacity of 950 MW, had been allotted in a completely transparent manner. During the protest on Saturday, Arya also raised the issue of alleged misuse of funds that were allocated to the state government by the Centre for organising the ongoing Kumbh Mela at
Haridwar. He said the state government would have to account for the amount of more than Rs 400 crore that was given by the
Central government. The state government has been drawing flak from other opposition parties as well on this issue. The Left parties have been seeking a White Paper on the expenses incurred by the state government for organising the Maha
Kumbh. |

7 According to a TERI spokesperson, the community radio in India is coming across as one of the most important and significant tool of communications. Just hearing themselves on the radio gives a sense of empowerment to people who realise that this truly can be their voice and help them get a better deal from the government and others. It’s an opportunity to speak out. The spokesperson further stated that TERI had envisioned a means through which the local community was enabled to address its own needs and issues, thereby becoming a successful model of self-sustenance and development. “For this reason, TERI took upon itself the task to set up a community radio named Kumaon
Vani, in Supi village of Uttarakhand. The aim was to bring the local communities on a common platform and enable better communication and flow of resources between them. As a part of this, training has been imparted to volunteers from the community,” she added. TERI Director-General RK Pachauri would also be present at the inaugural function. This project aims at empowering, enlightening and enabling 20 communities in and around Supi and Mukteshwar to speak up. Besides offering a variety of entertainment programmes, the community radio station would also aim at generating awareness on issues relating to education, health, sanitation, agriculture, weather and several more. |

Sunday market may re-open
Dehradun, March 7 Dhasmana said the police had agreed that if locals, who had been doing business for the past many years, produced their identification proofs and didn’t put kiosks on the road, then they could do it with the permission from the Municipal Corporation. Dhasmana said about 200 locals, who had been putting their stalls in the Sunday market for the past
20-22 years, along with him, gheraoed the circle officer of the Kotwali police station in favour of their demand. The police had not allowed the Sunday market being organised here for about the past three weeks citing concern that several outsiders, including from Delhi and Meerut, had their kiosks in the Sunday market that became difficult for the police to carry verification drive in view of terror threats. The police had removed the kiosks and even didn’t let the shopkeepers encroach the land by extending their shop to
the verandahs. Every Sunday, police personnel are deployed at the Patlan Bazar not to let Sunday market being organised there. |
Pancheswar Hydroelectric Project Our Correspondent
Pitthoragarh, March 7 When the Pancheswar authority meets in the coming months, the state will put before all the conditions of rehabilitation in clear terms. “The state will demand that the affected people should be given three-tire rehabilitation packages. They should be compensated by cultivable land in proportion to the land they have lost. They should be given constructed pucca residences in case they lose their residences and, last, they should be given employment,” said Pant. He said the rehabilitation package in Tehri had not been completed since there was lack of survey of the actual people affected by the project. “But in Pancheswar we will see that every aspect of rehabilitation should be clear before the project flags off,” he added. |

Referring to the women empowerment, she said on the occasion of International Women’s Day there was full hope of Women Reservation Bill being passed in Parliament. “Thirtythree per cent reservation will definitely lead to better opportunities for women in the field of politics and others,” added Alva. Highlighting the events of society, founder Chinni Swami and JK Swami discussed the centre’s vision to provide better living conditions to women and children. They said through the means of “Shri Shakti centre”, where rural women collectively designed and stitched variety of articles, families had got a helping hand and had enhanced their standard of living. Mussoorie, March 7 Not only this, the Mussoorie police has only 10 constables to attend any law and order problem here, of whom most of them are either on VIP duty or guarding schools due to board examinations. According to a senior police official, more than 15 constables, including five woman constables, have been deployed on the Kumbh duty. Sources say that most of the present staff is overstressed as they have to do night shifts in addition to day-time shift. The residents also feel there is a need to increase police personnel in the town as the summer tourist season is round the corner. |

Junior engineer gets one-year jail
Pitthoragarh, March 7 According to prosecution, JE Harish Martolia in 2004 submitted a fake estimate of Rs 20,000 to install a water connection at Duktu Primary School in Dharchula tehsil under the Sarv Shiksa Abhiyan. After sensing the fraud, Ashok Kumar Mishra, the then Deputy Education Officer of Dharchula block, lodged an FIR stating that the school already had a water connection. “After a detailed hearing, the Judicial Magistrate sentenced Martolia to one-year imprisonment,” said Harish Chandra Punetha, government advocate who pleaded the case. |
Class XII student commits suicide
Nainital, March 7 Vivek Prasad was found hanging from the ceiling fan by his mother and sister after they returned from the market. According to his family members, everything was normal till last morning. Vivek had taken an examination on Friday and he was good in studies. It is learnt that the police has recovered a letter that the deceased had written to his friend, in which he had conveyed that he was disillusioned with
his life. His family members are of the view that he might have taken the extreme step following a minor tiff that happened between two groups on Holi. |
