Mom throttles kids, commits suicide
Greater Noida, February 16 Afterwards, Sharda hanged herself from the fan in her room. When the neighbours knocked on the door, there was no response. Feeling suspicious, they informed the police who reached the spot and broke open the door to find all three lying unconscious in the room. While Sharda and Prachi were dead, Piyush was found to be unconscious. He was taken to the Kailash Hospital where his condition is said to be critical. “Sharda’s husband Narendra Singh has told us that he did not know anything about the matter. He said he had no tiff with his wife and their relations were normal. He did not tell anything else about them,” Verma said. Singh works as a technician with a manufacturing unit in Greater Noida. The family originally belonged to the Khushalpur area in Gulaothi. “Prima facie, it seems that the husband-wife might have some kind of marital discord. His wife’s affair outside marriage also cannot be ruled out at this stage. We are investigating the case,” Verma said. — IANS |

Man kills niece over character
Our Correspondent
Ghaziabad, February 16 The man allegedly killed her young niece because her in-laws had suspected her character. After the murder, he dumped her body in the Ganga canal. The girl, Shabnam, a native of Badli village in the Babugarh area, was married to Tahir of Meerut. Since Shabnam’s father was not alive, her uncle Ayub, the husband of her father’s sister, had arranged her marriage. After the marriage, Shabnam’s in–laws got suspicious about her character and complained about it to Ayub. Ayub reportedly asked Shabnam to mend her ways. But instead of doing that, she left her in-laws’ house and went away with a friend. On July 8 last year, Ayub brought Shabnam back from her friend’s place in Meerut. It is alleged that Ayub then took Shabnam to Mussori, strangled her to death and dumped the body in the Ganga canal. The police had recovered Shabnam’s body after a few days. Her maternal grandfather, Suleman, had then filed a dowry case against three persons, including Shabnam’s husband Tahir. However, Suleman later moved a court against Ayub, suspecting him of murdering Shabnam. The court had ordered the police to register a case against Ayub. Acting on the court order, the police arrested Ayub three days ago. The police claimed that Ayub had confessed to his crime and so was sent to jail. |
‘If Thames could be cleansed, so can Yamuna’
New Delhi, February 16 Oates, who visited the Delhi banks of the Yamuna, though emphasised that the Thames model was workable for Yamuna in entirety as both the rivers have different ecological setups. “Both the rivers are quite different in terms of the magnitude of problems facing them. In the case of Thames, about 150 years back, the conservationists then in the UK had an easier job, given that the industrial revolution then. The Thames was also just 300 km in length while Yamuna is much longer and calls for a holistic solution,” he said while speaking at the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) here. He, however, struck a note of hope and said any river could be restored if there is a well-chalked catchment restoration plan from top-to-down the stretch of the river and it is a management plan that can help preserve any river for future generation. He said NGOs should come with an alternative plan and put it in the public domain, challenging the government’s measure and may the best strategy be implemented in process. Former secretary of ministry of water resources, Ramaswamy Iyer pointed out that merely acting on pollution won’t work and the problem has to be dealt with wholly and collectively. For long-term action for the uplift of rivers like Yamuna, various dimensions have to be considered and the presentation given by Robert Oates is not the total answer, but have elements of the answer in it. |

‘Homeless told to leave
night shelter’
New Delhi, February 16 The group of homeless with the help of an NGO, Shahri Adhikari Manch, alleged that the NDMC officials are not allowing them to stay in the shelter. “Even though we have got permission from the court, the NDMC officials did not care and asked the people to evacuate the place,” said Indu Prakash, member of the NGO. HC to hear Sajjan’s bail plea today
New Delhi, February 16 Justice A.K. Pathak will hear Sajjan Kumar’s bail plea along with five others accused in the case. Apprehending arrest, the former union minister had approached the court on Tuesday against the trial court order but the court had refused early hearing. A city court had on Monday rejected Sajjan Kumar’s anticipatory bail plea, saying the “charges against him were serious”. Filing the petition , Sajjan pleaded that the lower court had wrongly rejected his plea on the ground that only the court that had issued summons can grant him bail. The court, in its order, had said no exceptional reasons have been brought forth that may entitle the accused for grant of anticipatory bail. Though the veracity of allegations was the “subject matter of the trial”, the findings suggested that there was some substance in them, it said.
