MCD gets list of 600 illegal colonies
New Delhi, February 7 The government has a list of 1600 unauthorised colonies and they had been issued with provisional regularisation certificates before the Assembly elections in 2008. Some of the colonies are built on the government land. When the government started the process of regularisation, Delhi Development Authority (DDA), Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and forest department raised objections for various reasons. But the urban development department has got cleared their objections against 600 colonies and has asked the MCD to prepare their outlay plan, the sources said. Reacting to the government’s decision on layout plan for 600 colonies only, leader of opposition in the Delhi Assembly, Prof Vijay Kumar Malhotra, said that this was injustice to the people living in the remaining 1,000 colonies. The government promised before the Assembly elections that all the colonies would be authorised and issued provisional certificates. Now of the total unauthorised colonies, only 600 are being regularized. It’s sad, Malhotra said. The Chief Minister had allowed various developmental projects in these unauthorised colonies where more than 50 lakh people live in inhuman conditions. However, after coming to power for the third time, the Congress government has become insensitive to their sufferings and stopped all the developmental projects, Malhotra added. He appealed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to issue a clear directive to the Forest Department, Archeological Survey of India and the DDA and ensure that the provisional regularisation certificate be made ‘permanent regularisation certificate’. |
Metro to take sharpest turn
in Gurgaon
New Delhi, February 7 “The sharpest broad gauge curve of the Delhi Metro has been constructed on its elevated section in Gurgaon near IFFCO Chowk with a radius of 282.05
metres,” a Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) spokesperson said. The curve located between pier number 125 and 137 en route to Gurgaon from Delhi’s
M.G. Road, has a radius much lesser in comparison to other curves on the Metro’s elevated track that generally measure more than 300
metres, the official explained. The sharp curves on Delhi Metro’s Gurgaon link had to be constructed to accommodate the existing high-rise buildings, malls and residential complexes in the national Capital’s satellite town. “The construction in Gurgaon section involved the use of three launchers and took twice the normal time in sections involving curves as the operation had to be done slowly and carefully to avoid accidents in these crowded areas,” the official said. Each segment was cast in 12 days in
Gurgaon. “However, the DMRC was able to complete the work in time and open the section for trials in January this year,” the official added. The seven-km elevated Gurgaon section forms part of the upcoming Central
Secretariat-Gurgaon corridor of the Delhi Metro, which will be an extension of the Jahangirpuri line from the heart of the national Capital on Metro’s line 2. Using this Metro line which opens to the public in June this year, commuters will be able to traverse 45 km through north, south Delhi and Gurgaon in just 90 minutes. Before the Commonwealth Games, the DMRC is planning to run a fleet of approximately 60 trains on this line with a frequency as high as one every three minutes, benefiting hundreds of thousands of passengers. — IANS |

Work on monorail to begin after Games
New Delhi, February 7 “For congested metro cities like Delhi, monorail can be the only solution as it can cover areas where buses and Metro trains cannot enter. If mono rails become a part of public transport in Delhi, people may opt for public transport instead of personal vehicles,” he said. “The monorail project is on Delhi government’s agenda. In fact, its detailed report is also ready. But it is a costly affair and cannot be done along with the Commonwealth Games projects. So the project will be started in 2011,” said Verma. According to the transportation master plan prepared by the Delhi government, the city will get three monorail lines. The lines will cover areas like the Walled City, Delhi University, Pul Bangash, Shakati Nagar, Anand Parbat, Ajmeri Gate, Delhi Gate, Red Fort, SPM, Daryaganj Kondli, Yamuna river crossing, Geeta Colony, Scope Tower, Vikas Marg, Patparganj, Kondli Road, Budh Vihar and Shakti Nagar. The networks will stretch over 41.5 kilometre. The project will cost the government Rs 7,000 crore and according to an estimate around 5 lakh people will travel on these lines every day. According to sources, the Delhi Integrated Multi-Model Transport system (DIMTS) was entrusted with the task to carry out the feasibility study of the proposed corridors. The report was submitted to the department concerned a year ago. The sources say that the government delayed the start of the project before elections as it was already facing criticism over BRT corridors, and after elections, the Commonwealth Games projects became its priority as they were behind schedule. |
Goel glowing, geared up to go places Political rumour mills in the Capital are abuzz over the future prospects of BJP leader and former Union minister Vijay Goel as he is tipped to take over as the next president of the BJP’s Delhi unit. The speculation was triggered when he was given charge of the party campaign against the rising prices of essential commodities. His detractors in the saffron party, however, feared that he would exploit this opportunity for his own promotion. And they are not quite off the mark. Just after the announcement, Goel was at the forefront, rallying party workers for dharnas. An insider said Goel has been quite excited since then and busy positioning himself as the next party chief in Delhi. Not an idiot to his fans
Chetan Bhagat might have been at the receiving end of celebrity columnists and glossy page writers for his “publicity gimmicks” when he castigated the producer and director of “3 Idiots” for not giving due credit to him. But the controversy has not dented his popularity among his readers. A huge jostling crowd of teenagers gathered recently to get one look at the writer when he put in appearance at the book fair at Pragati Maidan. An engineering student managed to grab his attention and began crying while shaking hands with him. “Sir, I am your biggest fan. I got motivated after reading your book and scored very well in my semester exam,” he blurted out, triggering a host of similar reactions from the crowd. Chetan seated the boy next to him and even posed for photographs with him. He later commented that he never expected such fame as an author, 3 Idiots or no 3 Idiots! The rare sight of
united media
When it comes to chasing news, media is often a divided house with the reporters looking for their own bits of exclusive inputs and bytes. So when the news went around that Bollywood’s new diva Katrina Kaif would be receiving an award from none other than Priyanka Gandhi, it excited them like nothing else and they descended on the venue in hordes. The wait of a few minutes, however, turned into several hours. When their patience finally ran out, the restless media, especially the photographers for whom the event was most important for its glamour quotient, decided to boycott the programme. The organisers pleaded with them to stay on but a united press corps, a rare sight indeed, said the four-hour wait was more than they could take. Someone present there said Katrina was fuming at this show of “discourtesy” by the media. The Pied Piper
of book fair
To attract visitors to their stall, German publications at the book fair have gone an extra mile. Right in front of the stall, a young, good-looking German sits inside a glass frame with a fancy mike. He invites visitors to hear him sing. The trick seems to be working quite well, especially, with young girls. When teased about his popularity, he said it was embarrassing. “Girls are pouring in but their queries are more about my contact details rather than books. Some girls candidly cooed that they had spent an unusually long time at the German stall just to stretch their otherwise short rendezvous with the young man. Love birds spread
their wings

Child-friendly courts in Delhi
New Delhi, February 7 Two ‘family courts’ will be inaugurated in Rohini to sort out family disputes in congenial and supportive surroundings instead of overcrowded and repelling environs of regular courts. “The two family courts are ready and we will inaugurate them later this week,” said a court official, speaking on condition of anonymity. The aim of having such courts is to give a friendly atmosphere to kids who come with feuding couples, he said. One such family court is already functioning in Dwarka court complex. “After witnessing an overwhelming response for Dwarka court, we are planning to extend it to all other district courts as well,” said the court official. “There are 20,925 cases of family and marital disputes pending across the various city courts. We need at least 35 family courts like these,” added the court official. The family court will also have full-time psychologists who can counsel couples whose marriages have hit the rock. For this, two separate rooms have been constructed where psychologists will hear the parties. After the enactment of the Family Courts Act, 1984, 61 family courts have been set up in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Orissa, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Bihar and Assam, among others. Family courts deal with issues of maintenance, custody, guardianship, divorce and various cases under the Hindu Marriage Act. — IANS |
Hundreds walk to support cancer patients
New Delhi, February 7 Hundreds of others also took part in the exercise. It was a four-km walk, “Walk for life”. Due to lack of knowledge, people do not approach doctors in the beginning of the disease. It is only when it becomes acute, they go to hospitals, said a participant. Nearly 80 per cent cancer patients who come to India for treatment are in advanced stages of the disease. To fight this problem, more awareness about the disease is needed so that early diagnosis may be done, said a member of CanSupport. If a patient gets proper treatment in the first stage of cancer, there is good chance of survival, he said. Most of the time patients have to fight a lonely battle against this disease, she said. |
