Batala
2 hurt in accident
: Two persons Mohan Singh (40) and Ratan Singh (60) were injured seriously when a Peter rehra (also known as Gharuka) struck a two-wheeler on the Batala-Jalandhar Road near the Civil Hospital today. Interestingly there is a ban on plying Peter rehras.

Shagun cheques: As many as 41 beneficiaries were given cheques of Rs 15,000 each under the Shagun Scheme here on Tuesday. The cheques were distributed by Jagdish Sawhney Chief Parliamentary Secretary, Punjab on behalf of State Government.

Bathinda
Constable suspended: A constable of the Bathinda jail, Bharpur Singh, was suspended on Tuesday on the charge of dereliction of duty. Sources in the jail said he was deputed at the gate to check the identity of visitors. However, he allowed a couple from Bhaduar village to enter the jail without checking their identity. The couple visited to meet a convict undergoing 10 years of imprisonment under the NDPS Act.

Release salary:
BEd teachers: State leadership of the BEd Teachers Front today urges all block education officers and school principals to release the salary of teachers at the earliest. In a press statement, state committee members of the front Chander Shekhar and Ravinder Singh said the District Education Officers (Secondary) and (Elementary) have officially intimated the District Treasury Officer, Block Education Officer and principals of schools. They appealed to authorities concerned that pending amount should be released as soon as possible.

Job fair: Departments of Industries and District Employment Generation and Training are going to organise an employment fair on February 19. The fair will provide an opportunity to youth and industries to interact with each other. It will also enable industrialists to select eligible candidates for their enterprises. This information was given by Sanjida Beri, District Employment Generation and Training Officer.

Workshop:
With a view to make people aware about the PNDT Act as well as on female foeticide, the District Health Department organised a workshop at RK Arya College on Monday. As many as 500 ASHA workers, Health workers, paramedical staff and representatives of various NGOs participated in the workshop.

Ex-KU VC dead
: Former Vice Chancellor of the Kurukshetra University (KU), PVSM (retd), Lt General K. Balram passed away in Delhi, following short illness on Sunday. He was KU VC from August 8, 1989, to August 7, 1992. MTech in Telecommunication Engineering, MSc in Defence Science from UK and Madras respectively, he was Commandant of Defense Services Staff College from 1981 to 1986. All the chairpersons, directors and senior administrative officers of the varsity attended the condolence meeting.

REWARI
Clerk suspended
: Cashier-cum-lower division clerk of the DHBVN office at Kosli Rattan Singh has been suspended on charges of embezzlement of over Rs 3 lakh by executive engineer of Rewari division of the DHBVN Manoj Yadav. Simultaneously, he has also been transferred to the Palhawas sub-station. Assistant general-manager of the Kosli sub-station Kitab Singh Khokhar said Rattan had fraudulently misappropriated a total amount of Rs 3,05,440 recently, while making no entries of the said amount in the CCR book of the Kosli office.

Challan against employee
: The SVO today presented a challan in the court of Special Judge (Anti-Corruption) against a Revenue Department employee of Kathua. Bishan Dass, a junior assistant in the office of Tehsildar in Kathua, was caught red-handed on September 9 last year while accepting a bribe.

Youth conference held:
Under the aegis of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, government of India, Nehru Youth Centre organised a youth conference here today. The conference began under the leadership of AP Ghildiyal, Director, Nehru Youth Centre, who lit the lamp and welcomed the members. District Coordinator Dinesh Upadhaya said as youth played a major role in nation building, they should come forward and work for the betterment of the nation. Writer Sanjay Mishra was also present.
