Wheat storage problems haunt state: Harsimrat
Jaga Ram Tirath (Bathinda),
February 15 “In a recent high-level meeting held at Chandigarh, we discussed the issue in detail, where it was said that almost all warehouses were jam-packed with the already procured foodgrains, including paddy and wheat, so it would be difficult to store the coming wheat crop.” Expressing deep concern over the issue, she said the state government had urged the Union government either to lift the already-stored foodgrains or to surrender the matter to the state government with an immediate effect. Alleging that the policies of the Union government were responsible for inflation, Harsimrat said, “Unjustified price rise would be our prime issue, which would be raised in the coming session of Parliament.” When questioned about the status of her proposal to the Union ministry to send a delegation, including MPs, to Australia to get a first-hand account of the situation about the alleged discrimination against Indians, especially Punjabis, she said, “It seems our proposal was swept under the carpet.” Harsimrat was here to inaugurate a 66-KV grid sub-station of the Punjab State Electricity Board, which, it is claimed, would provide relief to 22 nearby villages. She also attended various Sangat Darshan programmes and distributed cheques for water channels and school buildings. Further, she awarded scholarships to 41 students belonging to minority communities apart from disbursing pensions to 352 beneficiaries.

Fish farming feasible in waterlogged areas
Fazilka, February 15 The Farmers Organisation of Agriculture Development (FOAD) has managed to generate fish from a pond set up over 10 acres of waterlogged area of Sajrana village of this sub-division. “The results are encouraging as a large quantity of fish, which is easily marketable, has been generated from the ten acres of pond. Not only this, the effluent, which is generated in the fish ponds, is suitable for various kinds of industries because of its high protein value,” claimed Sanjeev Nagpal, patron of FOAD. More than one lakh hectares of area is waterlogged in Ferozepur and Muktsar districts of Punjab. A large section of those, whose land has become waterlogged, has turned labourers from the landlords and have been finding it difficult to earn enough to make both ends meet. The problem of waterlogging in this belt could not be solved despite the fact that Punjab government had spent hundreds of crores of rupees for digging up the drains to drain out the water so that water level in this belt could go down to render it fit for agriculture operations. “As research project, which was taken up to try fish farming in saline waterlogged area, has turned out be a big success so there is a need develop a business model to promote this activity on large scale,” Nagpal pointed out. He added that similar water bodies had been created in many countries such as Spain, USA and Israel etc. Israel had about 350 such ponds. He said he had visited Israel along with CM Parkash Singh Badal to attend international conference on water in 2009 where he discussed these water bodies with experts as these were operational with great success there. To develop this waste land, FOAD had proposed to state government to recommend this project for funding under National Agriculture Development Programme (NADP), scheme of the Centre so that necessary infrastructure could be developed for its implementation on a large scale. |
