Now, with RCA secretary Sanjay Dixit being under the CBI scanner for his alleged links with a history sheeter, some district cricket associations, reportedly owing allegiance to the group of IPL commissioner Lalit Modi, have demanded his removal from the post for “bringing disrepute to the association by having links with anti-socials”.

The Sachin & Sehwag Show

Kolkata, February 15
Sachin Tendulkar notched up his fourth consecutive Test ton and Virender Sehwag cracked 165 as India relied on the sheer class of the experienced duo to take control of the second and final cricket Test against South Africa here today. After polishing off South Africa's first innings at 296, the hosts rode on Tendulkar's 47th ton and Sehwag's 19th century to reach 342 for five at close on the second day which saw the home team lose three key wickets in quick succession at the fag end.

At stumps on an eventful day, VVS Laxman (9) and night watchman Amit Mishra (1) were at the crease with India having taken a lead of 46 runs. They will now look to take a substantial first innings lead and push to level the series 1-1 in the remaining three days.

The vociferous crowd at the Eden Gardens was treated to a stunning exhibition of strokeplay by the two Indian masters as they put on a 249-run partnership for the third wicket to torment the South Africans, who need to win the match to dislodge India from the number one position in the Test rankings. But both Sehwag and Tendulkar (106) fell at the fag end of the day alongwith S Badrinath.

Chargers to skip IPL if home matches are not back in AP

Mumbai, February 15
Deccan Chargers today threatened to sue the Indian Premier League authorities and skip the third edition of the Twenty20 league beginning next month if its home matches are not re-allotted to Hyderabad and Vishakapatnam.

Lashing out at the IPL Governing Council's "unilateral" decision — because of the ongoing Telengana agitation — to shift the matches to Navi Mumbai and Nagpur, Deccan Chargers chairman V Shankar told PTI that the Hyderabad-based franchisee would move the court if its demand is not met by the IPL governing council which meets on March 12.

"The IPL has taken a unilateral decision to shift all our home matches out of Andhra Pradesh though Chief Minister K Rosiah, Sports Minister K Venkat Reddy and the DGP have assured us full protection in the conduct of these matches," Shankar said. "The Telengana Agitation Committee has also given us in writing that they want these matches to be held (as per schedule)," the franchise chairman said.

"Anyway, Maharashtra is no safer place and we have several Australians in the line up, including the support staff, whose safety has been threatened," Shankar reasoned, referring to Shiv Sena's threat against the Australian players following the racist attacks on Indian students Down Under. Shankar made it clear that the Chargers, who won the title in 2009, will not hesitate to take IPL to the court and skip the league unless their demands are met.

IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi had initially announced only the shifting of the opening match between Deccan Chargers and Kolkata Knight Riders, as well as the gala dinner, from Hyderabad to Navi Mumbai's D Y Patil Stadium.

However, a couple of days ago he posted in his 'Twitter' page about the decision to relocate the other six home matches of DC too from Hyderabad and Vizag to Navi Mumbai and Nagpur.

In the revised schedule available on IPL's website, iplt20.com, neither Hyderabad nor Vizag is to host any match. More than a dozen changes have been made in the original schedule of the cash-rich league to incorporate the shifting of all the home matches of Chargers.

As per the revised schedule, the two semi-finals are to be held in Bangalore (April 21 and 22) and the final, as well as the 3rd place tie, are to be played at D Y Patil Stadium on April 24 and 25 respectively.

The first IPL was held in India and became a huge hit but the second edition was moved to South Africa as it clashed with the General Elections. — PTI

Ludhiana, February 15
The controversy surrounding the Kila Raipur sports festival refuses to die down as debt-ridden organisers of this mega event have alleged police pressure to support a faction led by Gurpinder Singh Grewal. Interacting with The Tribune team, the members of Grewal Sports Association (GSA) alleged that the police summoned some office bearers a few days ago and tried to prevail upon them.

General Secretary GSA Paramjit Singh Grewal alleged that today, an Inspector rank officer went to his house and as he was not present at home, the cop told the family members to handover the prestigious Bhagwant Memorial Gold cup, weighing 1kg gold, costing approximately Rs 18 lakh, to Gurpinder Grewal.

Paramjit alleged that Gurpinder was not even a member of the association. He was nominated for one-year-term last year, which had already expired on January 25. Paramjit even alleged that Gurpinder, who enjoys a considerable political clout, was trying to pressurise the GSA members.

The members are shooting, a memorandum to the DGP, Punjab PS Gill, apprising him about the police pressure, added Paramjit. The association has said that they have no objection with Gurpinder's initiative to organise this year's rural fest, but the GSA would not associate with him in any capacity and also declined to handover the gold cup.

The GSA has already decided not to hold the festival this year citing fund crunch. Sources revealed that the entire issue was resultant of the ongoing tug- of- war between two political groups wanting to stake their claim on this world famous rural sports festival.

On the other hand Gurpinder Singh Grewal slammed all the allegations raised by GSA as baseless. He said he had extended invitation to all the members of the GSA to support him in organising this festival.

In the meantime, the GSA has sent a legal notice to the PTC channel to desist from airing the advertisement using the association's name. This year's edition of the sports fest organised by Gurpinder and group would be the inaugural one. The GSA has said they would hold the 75th edition of this festival next year.

Govt brings NSFs, IOA and CGOC under RTI
Ravi Dhaliwal
Tribune News Service

Gurdaspur, February 15
A lot of things are happening in the all important year of the Commonwealth games. The latest is that the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has now decided to bring National Sports Federations (NSFs) under the ambit of the Right to Information act.

A notification to this effect will be issued by the Union Government next week. Earlier, the government had tightened the noose around the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee (CGOC) by bringing both the entities under the RTI act. Observers feel that this move assumes significance as it comes in the year of the Commonwealth games when allegations of corruption are flying thick and fast. The joint secretary of the IOA, Arun Vij, who is also the secretary general of the Fencing Association of India (FAI), confirmed this development and said, “The government has termed the NSFs as semi-government bodies since it is the government that funds them. Hence it has decided to bring all NSFs under the RTI act. We welcome the move as it will ensure transparency.”

Leave alone the NSF, state sports bodies will henceforth also under the ambit of the RTI. Last month the Delhi High court had ruled that CGOC and IOA fall under the range of the Right to Information (RTI) Act and have to provide information to an applicant.

Both the IOA and the CGOC had filed an appeal in the Delhi High Court against the Central Information Commission’s (CIC) order to provide information, The court had ruled that since both entities were public authorities they had to provide information under the RTI act and cannot keep their accounts private.

A top NSF official disclosed that, “Allegations of corruption have been rampant in the run up to the Commonwealth games. The RTI act will surely put in some transparency as far as expenditure being incurred by NSFs is concerned. Now an applicant can even ask for details regarding the selection process adopted by NSFs for selecting players for national squads. Even the State Sports Associations will have to be more open and transparent when they select teams for national and other championships.”

The Sports Ministry has also asked the IOA and the CGOC to designate their Central Public Information officers in accordance with the relevant section (section 5) of the RTI act. Once the NSF’s come under the act, they too will have to appoint their information officers.

Modi’s men seek Dixit’s removal

Jaipur, February 15
Even though the last year’s elections had put an end to the bitter power struggle in the Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA), controversies seem to be far from over in the state’s cricketing body.

Jhunjhunu District Cricket Association secretary Rajendra Singh Rathore and Tonk District Cricket Association chief Anant Vyas also sought Dixit’s removal for engaging former Indian pacer Manoj Prabhakar as coach of the Ranji team, despite his alleged involvement in match fixing. They also accused him of financial bungling and demanded a CBI probe into it. They said he himself should had resigned on moral grounds, but now that he has not done it, he should be sacked with immediate effect and stripped of his powers. They claimed that the CBI raids at Dixit’s office and residence had tarnished the RCA’s image.

“We have written to Union Minister and RCA chief CP Joshi and Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot to remove him from his post,” they said. Interestingly, they are not alone in their battle against Dixit as they have found support from the Rajasthan Cricket Players Association (RCPA), which hasn’t lost any opportunity to condemn him in the past.

RCPA secretary Shamsher Singh said since Dixit was underground, the preparations for the India-South Africa ODI scheduled for February 21 would get affected and in such a scenario it is best that he be removed immediately. On the other hand, sources in the RCA said Dixit has not gone underground, and he even held meetings with various committees regarding the forthcoming ODI on Sunday.
