South Africa gain batting practice
Nagpur, February 3 The visitors, on their part, can draw confidence from the fact that Ashwell Prince (42), Smith (45), Hashim Amla (72 retired), Jacques Kallis (63 retired), AB de Villiers (27) and JP Duminy (39) all got the starts and looked in form. Resuming the second and final day on 44 for no loss at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Ground, South Africa lost their captain when Abhimanyu Mithun had Smith caught behind. Prince looked good for a fifty when Ashwin trapped him eight runs off the mark to reduce the visitors to 115 for two. Amla and Kallis batted with utmost ease and milked the Board President’s XI attack which just could not trouble the veteran duo. Kallis was particularly impressive, using his feet well against the spinners, while he cut and pulled the pacers with elan to race to his half-century, which came when he hit Chawla over his head for a massive six. He grew so much in confidence that the beefy batsman started stepping out to meet even the pacers. Amla was tentative early in his innings but once he found his foot, the right-hander played some delectable flicks and cover-drives en route to his fifty. After they had guided the side past the 200-mark, Kallis decided to allow the subsequent batsmen to get some hit and retired after 56 overs. Four overs later, Amla followed suit. Kallis needed just just 58 balls for his brisk 63 which had eight fours and three sixes in it while Amla's 122-ball 72 had 12 fours in it. — PTI |

Paes hungry for more
Bangalore, February 3 Paes said he has always enjoyed his stay in Australia and termed as "unfortunate" the recent attacks on the Indians in Down Under. “It is very unfortunate that way that things have been going on in India and Australia. I have had long relations with Australians. Tony Roche coached me for three and half years in Sydney, where I lived with his family. Bob Carmichael, one of the greatest coaches in my life, taught me how to play the game of doubles. I lived with him in Melbourne. I can speak for myself that I have had some amazing interactions with them,” he said. Australia had also forfeited its Davis Cup tie against India last year but Paes hoped soon things will become better. “Whether it is tennis or cricket, people of Australia and India have shared great professional relationship. I believe that sports should be one of those vehicles to bridge good ties between countries,” Paes said. “I hope it is not far that India and Australia continue to have ties and get over the few incidents that have a happened in the near past,” Paes added. Paes says cinema has always been his interest and he is game to face the arc light if the right script comes to him. “Cinema is something that has always intrigued me. If down the track the right script, right director, movie and project comes along, I would love to explore the actor in me. But I haven’t signed any role or movie yet. I believe that there is a time and place for everything,” he said. Talking about India’s upcoming Davis Cup World Group tie against Russia he said it would not be a smooth sailing but fancied chances of pulling off an upset. India qualified for World Group after 11 years, following a convincing 4-1 win over South Africa in the play-off tie. “Playing Russia in the Davis Cup is a very, very tough tie for us, let alone in their own back yard. (Nikolay) Davydenko was world number one. He won the World Masters, beating Federer in the final. They have got an amazing depth but I always felt Indian Davis Cup team has been able to create some wonderful upsets and my Davis Cup record goes to show that. Anything can happen in the Davis Cup. To come away with a win will be magical.” Paes also said that he and Bhupathi will have to perform consistently to keep their place as the younger players were doing extremely well. —

Media kept out of National Stadium
New Delhi, February 3 A director of the SAI said a decision had been taken to keep the media out of bounds of the stadium as a television cameraman had allegedly tried to scale over the boundary wall. But it’s learnt that the turf war between the Sports Ministry and Hockey India was the real reason for keeping the media out as the SAI and the Ministry do not want to It may be recalled that chairman of the 2010 Commonwealth Games Organising Committee Suresh Kalmadi and Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit had not been invited when Sports Minister Dr M.S.Gill inaugurated the stadium last week. Meanwhile, Kalmadi today launched the sale of tickets of the Hero Honda World Cup, when he presented the first The tickets have been priced at Rs 100 (Rs 150 for final), Rs 500 (Rs 750), Rs 1,000 (Rs 1,500) and Rs 5,000 (Rs 7,500). |
GANSF seeks parity in payment to sportspersons
New Delhi, February 3 Prof Malhotra, who is the president of the Archery Association of India and chairman of the Reception Committee, 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, said the Government should reward the medal winners of the ongoing SAF Games with befitting cash incentives, and also announce substantial cash awards for the medal winners of the Commonwealth Games in Delhi and the Asian Games in China later. “Such gestures from the Government would boost the morale of the sportspersons, and encourage them to give out their best in international competitions to bring laurel to the country,” he added. Prof Malhotra said Sports Minister Dr M.S.Gill, instead of “making self condemning statements”, should concentrate on ensuring that the infrastructure for the Commonwealth Games were completed well on time. He said the “inordinate delay” in completion of the stadia and other infrastructure had caused “irrecoverable damage” to the entire project. He “agreed” with Dr Gill that the “infrastructure should have been in place by 2007”, but wondered who was responsible for the delay. He said the delay had not only caused escalation in the project cost, multiplying the expenditure beyond anybody’s magination, but has also affected the preparation of the Indian contingent for the Games “by not providing the home-ground training opportunity to a large number of core probables”. Prof Malhotra said the delay in construction of the stadia and other infrastructure defied logic as the entire project was to be carried out by Government agencies like the Central Public Works Department, Public Works Department, Sports Authority of India, Delhi Development Authority and the New Delhi Municipal Corporation. “It’s a clear case of criminal negligence by the Union Sports Ministry and the Delhi Government”, he said. He said the pathetic condition of the Yamuna river, on its bank the Games Village has been constructed, was highly deplorable and the Government in power should be held responsible for this. “The tall claims being made of making Delhi a world class city by spending more than Rs 30,000 crore would go down the drain when an advisory is issued to all locals and foreigners not to swim, bathe or enter the once great Yamuna river”, Prof. Malhotra pointed out. He said the General Association of National Sports Federations (GANSF) has vowed to resist all Government attempts to either dilute their autonomy or take over “as of late, it has been noticed that there is undue meddling by the officialdom in the affairs of sports bodies at the behest of the Ministry”. Prof Malhotra alleged that a “sinister plan” was being hatched to take over the sports bodies in the garb of “promoting the Commonwealth Games”. |
