Subway construction in CP
giving nightmares to traders
New Delhi, January 1 However, the revival of the area has become a nightmare for the traders in and around CP. The traders are skeptical about the timely completion of the work and feel that it might adversely affect their business during the Games. “According to authorities, the work would be completed in 240 days, which seems unrealistic, as even the façade restoration work has not been completed,” said Atul Bhargav, president, New Delhi Traders Association. The New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) has started constructing eight subways. The civic body was already carrying out the façade restoration work in the area. “The business has visibly been affected by these construction works as the people cannot bring their cars to the area. But if the situation remains the same during the Games, it will take a heavy toll on our business,” he said. The civic body has closed three lanes or one-third of the Outer Circle Road from today for the construction work and only two-third of the road is open for the traffic. The NDMC has removed the parking lots in the Middle and Outer areas creating great trouble for the people coming to their offices and shops in CP. “The parking lots in the Middle and Outer areas have been cordoned off as without this the construction work is not possible,” said Anand Tiwari, spokesperson NDMC. The Connaught Place is spread over three lakh square kilometers of land and has parking capacity of more than 5,000 cars, excluding the Palika multilevel parking. As per the renovation plan, the subways are supposed to sport modern designs and have CCTV cameras. Besides, they will be linked to the cooling mechanism to be installed in CP. The NDMC also plans to upgrade the existing five subways in the area. Only buses to railway station
can enter CP
All buses, except those to New Delhi railway station, were kept away from CP, today. “Buses for New Delhi railway station will continue to ply through Connaught Place. Routes of all other buses have been changed,” a joint advisory from the Delhi traffic police and the NDMC said. The Delhi Transport Corporation is yet to notify the changed routes. “General public is advised to use Metro and other public transport for going to Connaught Place,” the statement said. Only half the width of the Outer circle area shall be available for vehicular movement. The restriction on vehicular movements will continue for 80 days. |
19-yr-old girl murdered
New Delhi, January 1 The police received a call around 10 pm yesterday. The police said that the victim Khushboo was alone in the house when the incident took place. “Khushboo’s elder sister returned home around 9:45 pm and found Khushboo lying in a pool of blood with her throat slit. She then informed the police,” said a police official. The official said that the accused might be known to the victim as there was no sign of forcible entry to the house and the crime was done in a fit of rage. We have sought the mobile phone details of the victim,” he said. The police added that it was questioning the victim’s sister and neighbours to know if someone had visited their house. “Khushboo, a native of Ferozabad in Uttar Pradesh, used to work at a showroom in Cross River Mall in Karkardooma. Her sister also works in a mall,” said the police. |
Foggy start to 2010
New Delhi, January 1 The city was engulfed by a thick cover of fog early morning, making things difficult for the commuters, said officials of the metrological department. On Wednesday, the minimum temperature was recorded at 5.2 degree Celsius, the lowest of the season so far. However, the weatherman predicted mist in the morning tomorrow, with maximum and minimum temperature likely to hover around 21 and 7 degrees Celsius, respectively. The all-time minimum temperature was recorded on December 26, 1945 when the mercury dipped to 1.1 degree Celsius. |
Rowdy revellers detained
New Delhi, January 1 However, no complaint has been registered at Alipur police station. Alipur SHO Surinder Kumar said that three men were detained for some time. “We allowed them to go after some time with a warning as they were with their wives and children. Secondly, the incident had taken place in the wee hours today,” said a police official. Many drunk men had allegedly abused and disturbed other guests at the party. The incident was reported from Splash Water Park where over 1,000 guests had come to see the performance of Bollywood actor Shakti Kapoor. “Such incidents usually take place in parties where more than 200 people are drunk. Some people had objected to the behaviour of drunken guests and things began turning ugly. It was then that the police used force to disperse the rowdy guests,” said Kumar. |
Delhiites throng religious places on New Year
New Delhi, January 1 The roads leading to Bangla Sahib gurdwara in central Delhi was chocked with vehicles. In the chilly January morning, many walked barefoot to the gurdwara to pay their obeisance and seek blessings. “It’s a tradition in my family to walk to the gurdwara barefoot before sunrise every new year. I along with my family went to gurdwara at 4 am and stayed there for two hours listening to ‘shabad kirtan’ (religious discourse),” said Gurpreet Kaur, a marketing professional. Many people felt that visiting a gurdwara was the best way to start the New Year. “Nothing can be better than devoting yourself to god and I was at the gurudwara at midnight and prayed for a peaceful year ahead,” said Ramneet Singh, a businessman. At the nearby Sacred Heart Cathedral, people came in hordes to light candles and start the New Year with a prayer. “I went to church in the morning to light candles and prayed for a good new year for everyone. I have decided to spend the rest of the day with friends,” said Eric Paul, 20, a hotel management student. Megha Wahi, a 19-year-old mass communication student, said: “I got up early and went to Sai Baba temple on Lodhi Raod at 8 am. Later on, I have plans to watch a movie with friends and a dine with the family.” Many people were seen giving alms to beggars and some distributed sweets to children and old people sitting on pavements. “I went to a children’s home and organised a small cultural programme and gave sweets and clothes,” said Annie Malhotra, a homemaker. — IANS |

H1N1 kills 2 more
New Delhi, January 1 With these two deaths, the cumulative toll of the disease had reached 72, said an official of the National Centre for Disease Control. However, details of the two deceased were yet to be obtained from the government hospitals, he added. Meanwhile, the city health department maintains that the cases of H1N1 have been going down owing to the cold conditions and that coming days would see a further dip in the number of infections reported. “As the virus thrives only on moderately cold conditions, the current chilling winter is very unfavourable for the contagious virus,” said a city health official. |
189 booked for drunken driving
on New Year’s Eve
New Delhi, January 1 The figure is way below the last year’s count of 384 people. The traffic officials believe that constant campaign by the police against drunken driving through various mediums along with tight vigil discouraged people to avoid drunken driving. The Delhi traffic police carried out special drive against drunken driving from 12 am to 4 am today. “Several police teams— static and mobile — kept a tight vigil in the Capital to check people driving under the influence of alcohol,” said the spokesperson of the Delhi police Rajan Bhagat. Two magistrates were stationed at the Parliament Street police station to fine the offenders. Staff equipped with breath analysers and alcometres were deployed near pubs, malls and hotels as part of a drive to check dangerous and drunken driving during the festive season. Police control room (PCR) vans were also pressed into service to ensure hassle-free flow of traffic. According to traffic police data , as many as 799 people were challaned for drunken driving during the drives carried out by it during the year. “In 2009, we had carried out special drives against drunken driving once or twice every month. We were able to challan 799 people during these drives alone. As far as the total challans for drunken driving are concerned, we challaned 12,756 people in 2009,” said a traffic official. |
Metro may reach Gurgaon in February
New Delhi, January 1 Talking to The Tribune, Metro officials said the Gurgaon-Qutub Minar line was almost ready and might open before the Mundaka line. “If things work out the way they are planned, both these lines would open in February. The Gurgaon line might be opened for public even before Mundaka,” said a Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) official. The opening of Gurgaon line is scheduled for March-end, but the officials said things were running before time on that line and that construction work was almost over. Both these lines are bound to come as a huge respite for lakhs of people who live in the nearby towns but work in Delhi. The Mundaka line would make travelling much comfortable and fast for people residing in areas beyond Nangloi. Currently, owning to the traffic problems, residents of Nangloi take hours to reach areas around central Delhi, where most offices are located. Similarly, the 14.47 kilometer long Gurgaon-Qutub Minar line would connect the neighbouring city through public transport. The Gurgaon line would be connected to the Central Secretariat station in July this year. The total length of this section from Central Secretariat to Qutub Minar is 12.53 kilometers. This line would also bring some of the most posh south Delhi localities on the Metro network. Some important stations of south Delhi on this line will be Green Park, Hauz Khas, Malviya Nagar and Saket. The line would also have four stations on Race Course to AIIMS section—Race Course, Jorbagh, INA and AIIMS. The stations on Qutub Minar-Gurgaon line will be Chattarpur, Sultanpur, Ghitorni and Arjangarh. Expected ridership of the Qutub Minar-Gurgaon line by 2011 is 1.6 lakh, while the expected ridership of the Central Secretariat-Qutub Minar line by 2011 is 1.8 lakh. |

New Delhi, January 1 As part of the campaign, the NGO also gave a 15-day ultimatum to the association of Blueline buses to remove ‘horn please’ sign from every bus. “If these signs are not removed from the buses by January 15, the NGO’s team will teach a lesson to such drivers,” said Ravi Kalra, president of the foundation. He said that a team of volunteers from his NGO would obstruct the movement of buses after January 15 and try to convince drivers and conductors to remove the ‘horn please’ sign. “If they do not remove the sign, our volunteers will paint it. It is important to know that horn should only be used in emergency and not to claim the full road to one self,” said Kalra. The NGO had recently used 200 litres of paint to do away with the ‘horn please’ signs from commercial vehicles using the DND toll road. “It was a successful campaign and our men painted the sign on over 1 lakh vehicles in two months,” said Kalra.
