Delhi welcomes 2010 in full masti
New Delhi, December 31 As the night came by, the city lit up like a bride. The places hosting parties were glamorously decorated, with people walking in dressed in their best attires. Although, most of the parties began as early as 7 in the evening, it wasn’t before 9 o clock that the best crowd came out of their homes. Even the fog couldn’t dampen their spirits. Amplifiers and bass speakers could be seen at almost every corner of the city. While most parties were over by 1 am, it seemed that Delhiites were in no mood to quit. Divisha, who landed at Capitol in Ashok Hotel, Chanyakyapuri, with her group of friends, said, “The music here is just fabulous. I can’t believe that that the deadlines cannot be extended. After this party we might go somewhere else to party more.” Kartik, who came to Delhi from Chandigarh just for the celebrations, said, “After the five-stars close their parties, we might drift towards Gurgaon to some farm parties that will be on till early morning.” Many youngsters also thronged Come-sum and other local dhabas for late night food afterdrinks. “By 11 pm, their wasn’t enough space to stand in the club, so we friends planned to go on a long drive. We stopped at Haveli on the Sonipat highway and had amazing Punjabi food in the chilly weather. It was the best way to end the year,” said Mavik, who partied with his group of friends. Those who organised house parties were also not complaining as they enjoyed in the comforts of their homes without any deadlines. Vishal, who threw a private party at his friends house in Defence Colony, said, “If you want to throw a truly memorable bash, you would want to make sure that your guests have the best time and your party goes without a hitch. And being at home, we just had the best party ever.” |
English entrance test to go online
New Delhi, December 31 In a big convenience to students, they can apply online and sit for the examination online this year. A teacher from the English department at Delhi University informs, “Discussions are under way at the department to make the CATE examination forms available online. The idea is to simplify the application procedure by making CATE forms available online and giving students the option of taking the test online. A meeting was held recently to finalise plans along these lines. We should have a final decision soon on this matter.” Delhi University’s Institute of Life Long Learning is offering an option for a problem-free online examination for CATE. They recently made a presentation for an online examination before the English department and this might be accepted as a model along whose lines the CATE exam could be framed. The online test will most likely comprise objective and short answer questions. A senior teacher from the Institute of Life Long Learning informs, “We recently made a presentation of an online examination pattern before the English department and the response has been very encouraging. A final decision is expected within weeks and our model will in all likelihood be accepted by the English department for CATE.” So far, around 25 colleges have shown an interest in adopting the CATE examination pattern for the 2010 admission season. This includes colleges like LSR, Miranda House and Daulat Ram. The number of colleges who have shown an interest in CATE is almost double from last year. In 2010, CATE is expecting an addition of some 1200 more seats under it and this will take the total number of seats available through CATE to over 1500. Last year, CATE was held for the first time in 2009 at Delhi University and 12 colleges participated in CATE which included Hindu and Indraprastha. These colleges adopted the CATE examination pattern which covered some 350 seats. Out of 7000 applications that came in for CATE last year, approximately 6000 appeared for the test. |
Increased water tariff from today
New Delhi, December 31 According to sources, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) will take stringent action against those violating rules like installation of illegal connections and non-payment of water bills. The DJB is mulling over granting six months’ imprisonment to those using illegal connections and two months’ jail to those not paying their bills for more than two months. The DJB will depute magistrates in each district who will keep a vigil in their areas and punish those found guilty. “As per a proposal, we will have metropolitan magistrates in each district to look into matters like illegal usage of water. Three magistrates have already been appointed who will take charge from January,” said RK Garg, member of water supply department. DJB officials claimed that the board had been tough on those evading taxes. This has helped in increasing the annual revenue by Rs 30 crore. “Intensive checking over the last few months suggests that illegal tapping from DJB distribution lines is taking place in some colonies. In some cases, the connivance of field-level officials cannot be ruled out,” said a senior DJB official. The findings of the survey conducted by Tata Consultancy Services shows that in east Delhi alone direct connections have been taken from the mainline at 18 places. “Direct tapping gives 24x7 water supply to those who have procured illegal connection and reduces water supply in nearby areas,” he said. Consumers will have to pay two to three times more than the earlier rate, as charges for using 6,000 litres have been waived. The DJB substantiated the raise saying that the annual expenditure of the board amounted to Rs 2,000 crore, whereas the revenue generated was only Rs 450 to 500 crore. It thus incurred huge loss. However, with the hike in water tariff, the total revenue is expected to rise by Rs 300 to 750 crore annually.

Dense fog expected to greet
New Year
New Delhi, December 31 While the minimum temperature is expected to hover around 7 degree Celsius, the maximum temperature expected to rest around 25 degrees Celsius. Piercing cold wave continued to sweep the Capital today even as the mercury climbed slightly to settle at 6 degree Celsius. Flights were disrupted at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) as visibility dropped to 200 metres affecting around a dozen domestic and international flights to and from the airport. “The visibility improved to 700 metres around 9.30 am and many early morning flights were rescheduled,” an airport official said. However, today the minimum temperature was recorded around 6 degrees Celsius, a notch above the average, said an India Meteorological Department (IMD) official. Yesterday, the mercury had dropped to 5.2 degrees Celsius, the seasons lowest and people were expecting much lower temperature on the New Year’s night. Anyhow, the party scene was coupled with chilly winds and fog at late night hours. |
H1N1 cases dip as mercury dips
New Delhi, December 31 The Delhi government health officials heaved a sigh of relief as in the last couple of days, the city has seen a decrease in the viral infections due to dipping mercury levels and ongoing school vacations. The deputy nodal officer of H1N1 in the city, Dr Anjan Prakash, said, “There have been only 33 cases of H1N1 infection today, taking the total tally of the viral cases to 9,344. The cases are expected to reduce further with the lowering of temperatures. Earlier, cases went up over 100 given the comfortable cold levels, but with gradual decrease in mercury levels, the cases have gone down in the last few days.” Adding that with most of the schools remaining closed, the cases of children being infected by the virus has also decreased, she said, “Among today’s fresh cases of the flu, only 12 are children. The cases would remain low as now the contact of children with their peers would remain limited till schools reopen.” |
Driver, cleaner found murdered in tanker
Greater Noida, December 31 “The police team found a tanker lying along the road today around 2 am. The tyre was found punctured. When policemen opened the driver’s cabin door, they were astonished to find two dead bodies. One body had strangulation marks around the neck. Other had stab wounds on the body. The bodies have been sent for post mortem,”said Laxman Verma, SHO, Badalpur. “The victims were identified as driver Virender Singh(30) and cleaner Sunil Kumar(25). The tanker belongs to a Meerut resident. They had started from Meerut for Noida on December 28. When the tanker did not reached destination, the tanker owner had lodged a theft complaint against driver and cleaner at T.P. Nagar Police Station on December 29,”said Verma. “The Meerut police has been informed. It appears the truck was robbed from the Meerut area and the robbers were taking the tanker to Bulandshahr. However, due to a tyre puncture, they abandoned the tanker. But they killed the driver and cleaner as they feared they will tell the police their description and they could be caught,”said Verma. |
Blind call for legal action against PNB
New Delhi, December 31 Registering their protest against the discriminative and unfriendly behaviour meted out to them, some visually impaired people have called for a legal action against the bank. On December 5, The Tribune had reported about Renuka Bhagat who was denied an ATM card by PNB for over three years as she is partially blind. Bhagat has an account with the bank’s Hauz Khas branch. Mahesh C Panicker, another blind person and resident of Lajpat Nagar who works in Lady Sri Ram College, also narrated his struggle in getting an ATM card from PNB. Urging that PNB should be taken to the court for its whimsical ways towards the marginalised section, Panicker said, “PNB is the most difficult when it comes to ATMs and other facilities for the disabled. I was denied an ATM card by the bank’s Greater Kailash branch for seven months and got it only after RBI’s intervention.” Eyeway project programme manger Pranay Gadodia said, “RBI’s master circular that was issued to all banks last year spells equal treatment for all, including those with visual impairment. But the latest circular of PNB in February 2009 contradicts RBI’s guidelines, as it has asked a blind customer to get a witness for his/ her transactions. We receive at least one complaint daily on this matter. However, cases are not limited to PNB alone, as we get cases from other corporate and public sector banks.” In 2004, an NGO named Score Foundation had started the Eyeway project — a knowledge resource programme for the visually-impaired. Canara Bank (CB) and the Bank of Baroda have also been reportedly showing biased treatment to the blind section. Shobhan Singh, a blind student of Delhi University, has been trying to get an ATM card from CB for the past two years. He has even complained to the bank’s divisional manager and RBI ombudsmen, but to no avail. Gadodia said RBI should be proactive and conduct time-to-time auditing of the in-house policies of all banks. In Renuka’s case, he said, “I had sent an e-mail to RBI on December 21, attaching PNB’s current circular with RBI’s directives, but as of now, there has been no response. However, yesterday Renuka received a courier containing the ATM card and an undertaking.” Refusing to sign the undertaking, Renuka said, “The law does not require me to sign any extra document. Why should I accept any second-class treatment?” According to Gadodia and disabled rights activist Subhash Chandra Vashishth, there are some pre-conceived notions in society about life with blindness. “Society feels visually impaired people cannot protect their own interests and, hence, they are denied their rights. They have been compelled to live a marginalised life,” they said. Interestingly, Dena Bank (DB) which used to issue cheque books, ATM cards, along with netbanking facility to blind customers till March 2009 discontinued the service on PNB’s lines. Vashishth said, “Similar cases have been reported from other cities of the country. Vijay Chavan, who had a saving account with Jogeshwari branch of DB in Mumbai, enjoyed facilities of cheque book and net banking, encouraged his friends having accounts in PNB to ask for the same. But after PNB’s manager approached DB officials at Jogeshwari, DB stopped clearing Chavan’s cheques. This made him to cancel his account.” |
