Appointed: Former PPCC president Virendra Kataria has been appointed chairman of the Election Authority for West Bengal by the All India Congress Committee, sources said. Usha Thakkar, former MP from Gujarat, has been nominated as chairman of the Election Authority for Punjab. They will be ex-officio PRO also for the respective states. Meanwhile, Mangat Ram Chayal, vice-chairman of the PPCC SC/ST wing, has been appointed a member of the reconstituted Delhi Advisory Panel of the Central Board of Film Certification. Notably, a worker of the Dalit community in Punjab, he has been nominated on the panel for the first time.

Bathinda
Appointed: The dignitaries of the World Human Rights Protection Council recently appointed the state Congress leader Tehal Singh Sandhu of Bathinda as senior vice- president for the year 2009-10. An elated Sandhu assured that he would contribute his best for the  protection of human rights.

Sewing machines, tricycles given to the poor:
A virat Vedic Arya sammelan was organised at Hans Raj Mahila Maha Vidyalaya under the aegis of the Arya Pradeshik Pratinidhi Upsabha, Punjab, and the Arya Yuva Samaj recently to celebrate the 83rd martyrdom day of Swami Shradhanand. People from financially weaker sections were distributed sewing machines, blankets, tricycles for handicapped, CDs and CD players for visually challenged. Speakers exhorted the audience to work for environment protection and national integration.

Undertrial prisoner escapes from custody:
Undertrial prisoner Surja of Upkar Nagar, Ludhiana, escaped from police custody in Phillaur today. Reports said that Surta was under judicial remand, and was facing a criminal case registered by the railway police last month. He was kept in Jalandhar Central Jail and was brought to Phillaur for appearance before the Judicial Magistrate. The reports said the inmate along with some other undertrial prisoners was kept in “Bakshikhana” in the court, but suddenly he broke opened the window and escaped.

Telecom GM shifted: Rajiv Kumar, General Manager (Telecom), Jalandhar Circle, has been transferred to Ambala as General Manager, Transmission (Telecom). H.L.Verma, General Manager (Operations), Chandigarh, has been given additional charge of Jalandhar Circle.

PCC gen secy bereaved
: State Congress president Saifuddin Soz has expressed deep anguish over the demise of Rohit Kumar Sharma, brother of PCC general secretary Vinod Sharma. He described Rohit as a dedicated government servant. He offered condolences to Vinod Sharma and other members of the bereaved family. The other functionaries of the PCC also offered condolences to the family.

90-year-old charred to death: A 90-year-old woman was charred to death when her shanty accidentally caught fire in the Mahespura area of Bakshi Nagar locality on Wednesday night. The police said Parvati devi was alone in the dwelling when the incident happened. “It seems she had kept a candle burning in the shanty, due to which the dwelling caught fire resulting in her death,” it said.

Medical camp: As many as 600 persons attended the medical check-up camp organised by the Power Grid Corporation of India, NRTS-II at 800/400/220 KV Kishenpur substation here on Thursday. General Manager, Projects, Northern Region transmission-II, SK Sharma was the chief guest of the camp.

Youth killed in mishap: A youth was killed when an over speeding truck hit his motorcycle in the Bari Brahmana area of Jammu city on Thursday. The deceased has been identified as Sumit Kumar, son of Tara Chand of Samba. The police has impounded the truck and registered a case under Section 304 A, RPC.

Widow raped: The Bani police has registered a case against vehicle mechanic Sunil Kumar for allegedly raping a widow in a forest of Kathua district. Police sources said 27-year-old widow went to the Halanu forest area of the Bani belt on Wednesday evening and Sunil Kumar allegedly raped her there. The police has registered a case. However, Sunil is still absconding.

Youth arrested: The police arrested Sohan Lal of Kanachak on Thursday and seized 100 capsules of intoxicants. It also seized a machinery used in manufacturing soda, some empty cold drink bottles from him. In another incident, a worker died at a paper factory when a side wall of the factory collapsed.
