Beware! Redialling unknown number may cost you dear
New Delhi, December 25 A Delhi police head constable posted with Prashant Vihar police station lost Rs170 from his pre-paid mobile in a mere seven minutes after he responded to a missed call last morning. Head constable Pervez said he got a call on his mobile from 00953052392932 around 10 am and before he could take the call, it got disconnected. However, being a policemen and thinking it could be a source trying to catch attention, Pervez dialled back without realising that it was an odd 14-digit number. “The person on the other side told me that I have won a lottery of Rs10 lakh since I was an Airtel customer. After I told him that I am policeman and that I could throw him in the prison he got his supervisor, some Sanjay Verma on the phone. He confirmed the same thing and started telling about the procedure and how I could claim the money,” said Pervez. The head constable added that he kept talking to the person despite knowing that it was all crap with the intention of getting to know their modus operandi. “Verma further told me that I would have to buy a brochure of Dish TV before 1.30 pm and it should have Shahrukh Khan’s photograph on it. Besides, there would be some code number and after I tell them the number, the money would be transferred to my account,” said Pervez. The man also gave their Bandra, Mumbai, address to the constable and insisted that he should write it down. By the time Pervez hung up the phone, they had been talking for seven minutes and his mobile balance debited by Rs 170. “It then struck me that their intention was only to keep me engaged in talking to them and that is why they gave me a missed call,” said Pervez. When he told his colleagues about being thus cheated, they revealed that several complaints in this regard had been coming to the police station lately. “This is the latest technique of making money by some crooks who could have a tie-up with some service-provider cellular companies. They could be getting a cut of 30 to 50 per cent on each call initiated by them. We are investigating the matter and will soon catch the people behind it,” said a senior Crime Branch Officer. |
Mayor defends shelter
razing
New Delhi, December 25 The horticulture department of the MCD removed a temporary night shelter on Pusa Road on Tuesday night as part of the beautification drive for the 2010 Commonwealth Games. As a result, seeing through the chilly nights has become an everyday struggle for the homeless who had taken refuge in the shelter. “The occupants were informed that the night shelter would be removed and a notice was served in this regard. We are well aware of the problems that the poor face during winter and would not render anyone homeless without reason,” said Mayor Kanwar Sain. Braving the plummeting temperature, men, women, children, old and the ill, who till now used to take refuge in the shelter, have been lighting small bonfires out of scrap material on the roadside to protect themselves from the cold. However, according to the municipal officials, alternate arrangements have been made for those who had been taking refuge in the night shelter. “An alternate arrangement has been made for the people who used to take refuge in the Pusa Road night shelter,” he said. Delhi has mere 40 night shelters— 25 run by the MCD and another 15 temporary structures run by the Delhi government— for around 1,00,000 homeless people. The Pusa Road roundabout from where the night shelter was removed is to be developed by the engineering and the horticulture departments for the Commonwealth Games. |
Noida RWAs protest DTC
bus fare hike
Noida, December 25 The association has appealed to UP Chief Minister Mayawati to intervene in the matter and ensure a roll back of the hike in the fares of DTC as well as UPSRTC buses. FONRWA president, N.P.Singh, said, “We are cursing the day when during the Mulayam Singh government the UP Roadways started operation in Noida. Since the day, bus service between Noida and Delhi has become worse. It was only after Mayawati came to power that the matter was resolved and buses started plying between the two cities.” “DTC was given special permission to ply city buses in Noida and set up its depot in the city. Noida appeared to be an extension of Delhi and enjoyed a special status not enjoyed by any other NCR towns,” said Singh. “UPSRTC had hiked bus fares as per its inter-state bus fare plan. But after the hike, when its buses did not get enough commuters, UPSRTC, instead of reducing its fares to the DTC-level, put pressure on DTC to hike its fares as per the inter-state fare structure. The DTC was threatened that if its fares were not hiked, its buses would not be allowed to enter Noida,” said Singh. “As a result, DTC hiked its fares as per the UPSRTC structure by introducing double-fare system. Now, the commuters have to very much extra,” said Singh. Singh said that a decade ago it was planned to set up Noida Trasport Corporation in association with DTC to run buses between Noida and Delhi. “Had this decision been taken, the residents would not have to suffer so much,” said Singh. |
Gt Noida can expect better power supply
Greater Noida, December 25 Presently, private distribution agency Noida Power Company Limited (NPCL) is supplying power to Greater Noida. With the grant of the distribution licence to PVVNL, the residents of Greater Noida can now choose their power supplier. PVVNL, which currently supplies power to the entire western Uttar Pradesh, including Noida, had on January 21, 2009 applied before the commission for grant of distribution licence for Greater Noida. NPCL, which got the distribution licence for Greater Noida in 1993 for the next 30 years, had filed its objection against the grant of licence to PVVNL. To decide about the grant of licence, UPERC conducted a public hearing on October 1 at the district magistrate’s office at Greater Noida. Based on the verbal submissions made during the public hearing, the commission came to the conclusion that the people of Greater Noida were not satisfied with the services of NPCL and had no objection to the grant of second distribution licence to PVVNL, as this would promote competition and lead to better service. The general view of the consumers was that NPCL did not have adequate power to distribute. People were generally unhappy with NPCL for its failure to set up a generating station of its own as promised by it at the time of the grant of licence in 1993. NPCL gets power supply from UPPCL and some other sources, but still residents have to experience long power cuts. “PVVNL would be investing an amount of nearly Rs 55.75 crore in the project,” said A.P. Mishra, superintending engineer, PVVNL (Noida). Residents with whom The Tribune talked were of the view that competition would bring efficiency and improvement in services. “We can hope to get rid of the long power cuts as now we can have choice our power supplier,” said Priya Sharma, assistant professor, Dayal Singh College and a resident of Greater Noida. |
Batra Hospital told to pay Rs 11 lakh
to man who jumped from window
New Delhi, December 25 The court was hearing the appeal of the hospital that was ordered to pay Rs 7 lakh by a single bench judge to Ashish Kumar Majumdar, who was admitted in the hospital following high fever suspected to be typhoid. However, Majumdar's condition did not improve so the doctors decided to change the treatment and put him on different medicines. On October 31, after giving Majumdar medicine, doctors left him sleeping in his third floor room, but in the middle of the night, his sister Kajal noticed that he was not in the room and informed the staff nurse. Majumdar has reportedly jumped out of his window and suffered multiple fractures with complete dislocation of the spinal cord. Despite treatment, he became disabled below the waist. A division bench of justices Vikramjit Sen and Sunil Gaur said: "Quality of care expected from specialised private hospitals is not ordinary but of a high degree." Majumdar in his plea alleged that the hospital had not taken proper care of him and due to their negligence he is confined to a wheel chair for rest of his life and he needs a full-time attendant to look after him. However, the hospital said it cannot be held responsible for the patient's act of jumping out of the window of his room and the consequent complications suffered by him cannot be said to be result of any negligence on its part. "Duty of care in the case of hospitals is not limited to diagnosis and treatment but extends to providing safe and secure place to ensure that the patients do not injure themselves. It is not uncommon that patients who are sick or under medication can become delirious, incoherent or act in a manner which would be harmful and not in their interest," the court said. "Strict vigil in hospital premises and round the clock safety checks are required to prevent a patient from taking steps or acting in a manner that could cause injury or harm," the court added.

Temporary DTC drivers on dharna for permanent status
New Delhi, December 25 This was said by Surender Kumar, a temporary driver with DTC, who was sitting on dharna in front of the DTC headquarters demanding that his job be made permanent. He said 1,500 temporary DTC drivers had been sitting on dharna for the past 15 months demanding permanent jobs. According to Surender, in 2003, DTC appointed 1,500 temporary drivers for Rs 100 per day. In 2007, they were taken on contract basis for Rs 94 per day. Later, DTC appointed 500 new drivers on permanent posts. Surender said legally first the 1,500 temporary drivers should have be absorbed and only then new candidates should have been hired. “We are well qualified and fulfill all conditions required for the permanent job. We are given Rs 94 per day, though the new drivers are given a salary of Rs 16,000 per month. This is injustice”, he said. Surender said that in the leadership of Gopal Paharia, a senior leader, a delegation of temporary drivers had met former transport minister Haroon Yusuf and the new transport minister Arvinder Singh demanding permanent jobs. “The minister assured us that we will be absorbed, but so far nothing has happened. We will not take back our agitation till our demands are met,” he said. |
