Noida, December 15
About two dozen policemen and villagers were injured in the Bakhtawarpur area today when the two clashed during a demolition drive in Noida’s Sector 127. The police had to resort to mild lathicharge when villagers started pelting stones on the demolition squad

The drive was carried out in Sector 127 in Bakhtavarpur village.

At 9.30 am, when the Noida Authority bulldozers razed three structures constructed illegally on the authority land, the local residents protested and pelted stones at the demolition team, said an authority officer.

Villagers got further agitated following a rumour that a woman had died in the lathicharge. It was later learnt that the woman had actually fallen unconscious. She was taken to hospital where her condition was said to be stable till late evening today.

About a dozen vehicles were damaged in the clash. Around a dozen policemen, including SP (city), were injured in the incident. Some of the injured villagers included Vipin Vijender, Rohtash, Jaspal, Jagdish Davinder and Chanderpal.

Though villagers claimed the police fired several rounds in the air, district magistrate Deepak Aggarwal denied firing and said the police resorted to mild lathicharge to disperse the mob.

Sixteen persons had been arrested so far. Majority of them were outsider, the DM added.

Parents queue up for nursery admission forms

Tribune News Service

New Delhi, December 15
The rush for nursery admissions began this morning with parents queuing outside schools to collect forms. Many parents took the day off from work to visit schools and collect forms for their children.

The Delhi directorate of education has instructed schools to sell forms for nursery admissions between December 15 and January 15.

Most schools are selling forms between 9 am and 12:30 pm.

The first list of candidates will be out on February 1, while the entire admission process will be over by March 31.

The schedule for admissions was streamlined after the directorate of education cracked the whip on schools across the Capital and issued its guidelines on October 29.

This has greatly benefited parents who will not have to run from pillar to post keeping up with the dates for different schools.

A parent Gayatri Juneja shared, “I have listed the schools where I would apply for my daughter’s admission. I will move around different schools today and collect admission forms. I want to put my daughter in Springdales. The process is much more convenient this time with all schools opening admissions today. This time it is much easier as compared to my son’s admission five years ago.”

Another parent Sonia said, “My first choice is Sanskriti. I have already collected the form and will apply at three more schools for my son’s admission. I am hopeful he gets through Sanskriti.”

While Raghav Sharma who was concerned for his son’s admission shared, “I have made a list of schools where we are going to apply for our son. I have also checked out the websites of around nine schools. I have applied to Sri Ram School for my son online. I will also visit Vasant Valley School which is my second choice. There is no doubt that with admissions of all schools beginning collectively today, the process has become much more organised.”

Schools like — Sri Ram and DPS — have made their forms available online. Besides, the forms can be collected from the schools too.

While schools like Springdales prefer that parents collect forms from the school itself and have not offered the online option.

Meanwhile, the directorate of education is also ready with a grievance redressal mechanism for parents apart from the online complaint register facility. Parents can register their complaints online. A district monitoring cell headed by the deputy director of a district will attend to the complaints.

The directorate has warned schools with stringent action if found ignoring the admission guidelines. Despite the warning, some schools began their admissions as early as October and November and refused to fall in line with the directorate’s diktat.

NHRC pulls up cops for torturing kids

New Delhi, December 15
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has hauled up the Noida police for allegedly torturing two minors earlier this month, saying it is “a serious violation of human rights.”

According to media reports on December 4, two children named Radha Mishra and Munna, aged nine and 12, respectively, were held by the Noida police on November 14 after a contractor alleged that the two had stolen a bag from his car.

“The kids, the owner said, were seen hovering around the car and he beat them up before handing them over to the police. The children were reportedly taken by the police to Jhundpura police post in Noida Sector-11 and after allegedly beating them, tied their hands with a rope and hung them from the ceiling fan,” an NHRC official said.

“However, the car owner later discovered that his bag was in the car itself. This is a serious violation of human rights,” the official added.

The commission issued a notice to senior superintendent of police, Gautambudh Nagar, (Noida) seeking a factual report of the incident within four weeks. — IANS

Fake Mawa Case: 2 get life term
Our Correspondent

Greater Noida, December 15
A fast-track court in Bulandshahr has awarded life imprisonment to two persons convicted of making spurious milk cake (mawa). The court has also slapped a fine on Rs 50,000 on each of them.

The adulterators -- Om Prakash and Kishore -- were caught red-handed by Gulawati kotwali team on February 20, 2008, while manufacturing fake mawa. They used to supply it to sweet shops in the national capital region (NCR).

The court found Om Prakash and Kishore guilty of making spurious mawa. The court observed that making and supplying fake mawa was a crime and said that adulterators are the enemies of the society and deserve exemplary punishment.

The police had seized large quantity of ingredients like chemicals, liquid jell, white chemical, urea powder, detergent and refined oil etc, used in making fake mawa.

In Gautam Budh Nagar the district authorities had recovered ingredients for making fake milk cake in June 2009. A case against four persons was filed and the matter is in a court right now.

Charges framed against Salem in extortion case

Tribune News Service

New Delhi, December 15
A Delhi court today framed charges against underworld don and mobster Abu Salem for allegedly making extortion calls to three Delhi-based businessmen in 1998.

Holding prima facie evidence against Salem, additional chief metropolitan magistrate Kiran Bansal ordered framing of charges under Sections 384 (extortion) and 120 B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Earlier, in 1998 the Hauz Khas police had lodged FIR against the accused under the same provisions.

However, Salem denied to plead guilty and decided to fight the case.

Meanwhile, the court has fixed the matter for recording statements of prosecution witnesses for January 11, 2010.

Earlier, Salem had opposed the charges on the ground that the Indian government did not mention his impending prosecution under harsher provision while seeking his extradition from Portugal.

Salem along with Romesh Sharma, the alleged front man of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, was booked for allegedly making extortion calls to the businessmen.

The court had ordered separate trials for both the accused.

Salem was extradited from Portugal in 2005 to face trial in various cases, including the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts.

Have more than 2 vehicles? Get ready for tax

New Delhi, December 15
The Delhi government has proposed a tax on vehicle owners who have two or more vehicles and told the Delhi High Court this was necessary to ease the worsening traffic situation in the Capital.

Traffic police counsel Vikas Pahwa informed a special three judge bench comprising Chief Justice Ajit Prakash Shah, Justice S. Muralidhar and Justice S. Ravinder Bhatt that it had submitted suggestions to the government and they are under consideration.

“To ease out the traffic on the roads first and foremost step is to put a hold on the registration of the vehicles. And for those people who have more than two vehicles registered on their names, we are planning to slap more taxes on them in the form of road taxes, parking charges, area pricing and other such taxes,” Pahwa submitted.

As per traffic police, 30 per cent of the vehicles plying on the road are cars and 62 per cent two-wheelers.

Appreciating the traffic police’s suggestion, the bench asked the government to consider them.

The court was hearing a petition by NGO Manushi which said that the court’s order and the MCD policy of banning rickshaws from the main arterial roads and Chandni Chowk area in Old Delhi was arbitrary and violated the fundamental rights of rickshaw pullers.

The court while reserving the order asked the MCD to submit the written arguments within a week’s time.

The government had earlier suggested introduction of biometric badges to the cycle rickshaw pullers.

Every rickshaw puller is to be issued a biometric badge. Traffic police will be provided with hand-held biometric badge readers to check the authenticity of the rickshaw puller,” Meera Bhatia, counsel of the Delhi police, said.

The Delhi government has also suggested that the MCD consider adopting different colour codes for each city zone. — IANS

Expressway land case reaches apex court
Our Correspondent

Gt Noida, December 15
A farmer, Prashant Gujjar, has taken the matter of acquisition of land for construction of Yamuma Expressway to the Supreme Court. The land is being given to a private company which is to build the Expressway.

The farmer has alleged that a private company has been allotted land at half or three-fourths of the market land rate and the company has also been given considerable concession in stamp duty payment which amounts to unreasonable benefits.

The matter had come up in the apex court on Monday, which posted the case to January 7 for next hearing.

It may be added that 1,000 hectares of land has been handed over to the building company in Noida and Greater Noida area under settled terms and conditions for building the Yamuna Expressway which will connect Javer in Noida to Agra. The land was acquired by Yamuna Expressway Authority from farmers and handed over to the company without the company having paid any stamp duty, he alleged.

DU Fests: Students look for sponsors
Akhila Singh
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, December 15
As the college festivals kick off in Delhi University (DU), students are running from pillar to post in search of sponsors.

Organising a mere two-day festival in DU is not everyone’s cup of tea as the estimate budgets go as high as Rs 30 to 40 lakh. The students believe it’s the only responsibility in DU that the college unions have to undertake.

“While electing college unions, students generally look for resourceful candidates who could get college huge sums of sponsorship as it is the only time of the year when the office-bearers rise up to the occasion,” said Natasha, a student from Hindu College.

Kirori Mal College at the north campus of DU has scheduled its annual festival on December 21 and December 22. The college union’s budget for the two-day event is around Rs 19 lakh.

The college student union president Mukesh Bishnoi said he was holding meetings with firms, including Pepsi, Hero Honda, Choco La and Habib Hair Saloon for sponsorships.

“Every night we have our meeting in the college hostel to decide what all companies are in and how much more money we need,” said a sleep deprived Bishnoi for whom organising this festival is one of the biggest challenges of his life.

The college is considering names like Shibani Kashyap and Mohit Chouhan for the last day’s celebrity performance.

The popular Miranda House festival, Tempest, was a three-day affair this time from December 7 to 9. The college union was under a lot of pressure to cut down its budget till last minute when Nokia came out to sponsor it.

“Our total budget estimate was around Rs 6 lakh, but no major sponsor was ready to put in money so the college union was under pressure to cut down,” said Ranjini, union member in Miranda House.

The festivals are also a time for music bands to make money. “Inviting two music bands Faridkot and Groove Adda only cost us around a lakh,” said Ranjini.

The Hindu College festival that is going on right now is considered most expensive this year as there are more than three big bands performing. The prize money itself comprises Rs 2.5 lakh.

On the other hand, the profile of festivals on JNU campus is completely different.

Sheila govt faces no-trust move
Syed Ali Ahmed
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, December 15
The Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Legislative Assembly, Prof Vijay Kumar Malhotra, today moved the no-confidence motion in the House against the government. The motion said that government was fail on all fronts.

The motion was supported by 24 MLAs of the BJP and led to a discussion over the government’s failure to control inflation, pathetic law and order situation, scam in power privatization and Delhi Jal Board.

The counting of the Congress MLAs will be made tomorrow after the speech of the Chief Minister.

Moving the motion, Professor Malhotra said the Sheila Dikshit-led Congress government had deceived the citizens as during the assembly elections, the Congress assured the electorate that it would control price rise, make houses for the poor, approve unauthorised colonies, ration cards for the residents of the below poverty line, adequate power and water supply etc. But it had done nothing.

Reciting Mirza Ghalib, “Hazaron khwahishein aisi, ke har khwahish pe dam nikle” Malhotra said inflation had risen up to 4.78 per cent from October to December.

Sheila Dikshit assured the poor residents of the capital that BPL cards would be issued to the poor living in slums and unauthorized colonies but 30,000 people had not been issued ration cards. Earlier 6000 litres of water was supplied to slum dwellers free of charge, but now this facility had been stopped.

Sheila Diskshit also claimed to provide houses to jhuggi dwellers but so far not a single resident of jhuggi had been allotted house.

He said that water and power tariffs had increased manifold. People do not have water to drink but the government is installing fountains at CWG village.

He also said though Rs 1800 crore had been spent on cleaning the Yamuna, the river was still stinking.

On the one side he government has a plan to spend Rs 15000 crore in 10 days during CWG 2010 on the other it is increasing VAT, bus fare and water tariff, saying that it has lack of funds.

Responding his questions Congress MLAs, Mukesh Sharma, Ramakant Goswami, Anil Bhardwaj, Tarwinder Singh Marwah and Subhash Chopra supported the Chief Minister saying allegation laid in the no-confidence motion has no basis. Inflation is not a state and national phenomena.

It is in every country in the world. The Congress government that has been ruling Delhi for the past 11 years has changed its face by development works.
