Subsidised pulses at Mother Dairy a big relief
Himani Chandel
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, December 11
At the time when prices of fruit and vegetables are heading north, the pulses being sold at subsidized rates at various Mother Dairy outlets have given some relief to the people in the city.

According to the shopkeepers, there is tremendous demand for the pulses as they are sold at significantly low prices. The decision to sell pulses at subsidized rates was taken by the Delhi government in August.

“The stock is generally sold within a few days. In fact, people buy them more than vegetables and fruit,” said a Mother Dairy staffer at a Model Town outlet.

However, some people have also complained of the non-availability of sugar and poor quality pulses. “No doubt, dals at Mother Dairy are priced low, but their quality is not up to the mark,” said Vijay Kaundal, a housewife in RK Puram.

People are also wondering about the sale of subsidized sugar at the Mother Dairy outlets. “There is no sugar available at the outlets,” said Sangeeta Sharma, a resident in Malviya Nagar.

According to some residents, the outlets in their vicinity are not selling anything other than fruit and vegetables. “The Mother Dairy in our locality only sells vegetables and fruit. It is only in Kendriya Bhandar that we get subsidized food items,” said a resident of Mukherjee Nagar.

In August, the Delhi government had tied up with merchants to sell pulses at subsidized prices through 80 government and 288 Mother Dairy outlets.

Delhi-Noida Route
Bluelines ignore withdrawal order
Commuters say DTC buses not sufficient

Parmindar Singh

Noida, December 11
Blueline buses, which have been withdrawn by the Delhi government from the Delhi–Noida route, continue to ply as before. Around 100 buses were seen on Noida roads on Thursday and Friday.

The president of the Blueline Bus Association, Rajiv Chaudhary, said the permits of Blueline buses plying on the Delhi-Noida route had not been cancelled, but the buses have been shifted to Delhi.

“Blueline buses will continue to ply on the route till the Delhi transport authorities issue new bus permits for them. We have paid all the taxes till 2010,” said Chaudhary.

He further said that Delhi transport minister Arvinder Singh Lovely had assured him that new permits for Blueline buses would be issued soon. “Lovely said Blueline buses had been withdrawn from Noida as an agreement could not be reached with the UP authorities,” said Chaudhary.

Noida ARTO Anil Kumar and transport inspector Saffuddin said they had not yet received the written order about the cancellation of permits of the Blueline buses running on the Delhi-Noida route and so that they could not take action against these buses.

Meanwhile, commuters in Noida are having a harrowing time. Besides being angry over the hike in the fares of Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses, they are also upset over the fact that only 150 DTC buses have been introduced to replace about 300 Blueline buses. These 150 buses are in addition to the existing 40 low-floor DTC buses already plying on the route.

According to an estimate, around 25,000 to 30,000 people travel on buses running between Noida and Delhi every day. The shortfall of buses leaves a large number of commuters stranded at bus stops during the peak hours. Large crowds of commuters were seen waiting at Sectors 12–22 and 37.

Speaker seeks CBI probe into ghost MCD staff
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, December 11
Speaker of the Delhi Legislative Assembly, Dr Yoganand Shastri, today recommended a CBI inquiry into the fake employee case of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).

He made this recommendation after Congress MLA Anil Bhardwaj raised this issue under Section 280 of the Delhi Assembly Act and claimed that it was a major scam which required a thorough inquiry.

Bhardwaj claimed that there were 22,000 fake employees in the MCD who were not on the record but they drew salaries. This has been accepted in the vigilance report of the corporation submitted to the municipal commissioner, K.S. Mehra.

He said that the issue had affected the revenue of the civic body. The government should find out the culprits.

Just after his statement, the BJP MLAs stood up, claiming that the fake employee issue had been going on for many years when the Congress was in power. They also demanded the CBI inquiry.

Former leader of opposition, Prof Jagdish Mukhi said that the scam was busted by the BJP-ruled corporation. The credit should be given to the BJP, he said.

Veer Singh Dhingan, a Congress MLA, also raised this issue, claiming that the case was related to safai karamcharis though they were not bogus. About 35,000 employees are on regular basis while 15,000 to 20,000 workers are temporary.

Responding to the opposition, urban development minister A.K. Walia said the CBI inquiry into the case would be recommended after examining the MCD’s vigilance report.

Anand Vihar to get Metro in a week
Akhila Singh
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, December 11
It might only take another one week for Anand Vihar residents to get connected to Metro. Talking to The Tribune, the Metro officials indicated that trail runs on the Yamuna Bank to Anand Vihar line are likely to start as early as tomorrow. “We are going to start the trail runs on this line either tomorrow or day after,” said sources in the Delhi Metro.

The official added if things went smooth, the Metro line could be opened for public soon. The official date for the opening of Anand Vihar stretch was scheduled for the end of this year.

The total length of this corridor is 6.17 km. The Metro would pass through five stations— Laxmi Nagar, Nirman Vihar, Preet Vihar, Karkarduma and Anand Vihar.

The opening of this line is crucial as it is part of the public transport compatibility plan charted out by the Indian Railways and ISBT.

DMRC officials said the upcoming Anand Vihar Metro station on the Yamuna Bank to Anand Vihar corridor had been “planned as a major integrating terminal that would bring together three modes of public transport— the Metro, Indian Railways and the ISBT.”

The Anand Vihar ISBT has been functional for a few years now and the Indian Railways is coming up with a terminal for all east-bound trains by the end of this month.

The government is also planning to remodel the ISBT as per international standards.

The Anand Vihar station is 300 meters from the Indian Railways terminal. The area of the Metro station and the ISBT is common, enabling commuters to reach both the systems. A 10-meters-wide passage connecting the station from the ground level to the ISBT and Indian Railways terminal is also being planned. This passage will be open for the public 24 hours.

The PWD has undertaken restructuring of the approaching roads to ISBT to ensure access to all three stations.

The daily station load forecast for the Anand Vihar station is almost 2.5 lakh for 2011.

One trader dead, another hurt in shooting incidents
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, December 11
A businessman was shot dead while another was injured in two incidents of shooting that took place here last night.

A businessman was killed by car-borne assailants in P4-Block of Sultanpuri at 11 pm.

The victim, Sanjay Chaudhry, a cable operator, was watching a wedding procession when he was fired upon. “Sanjay was rushed to the Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. He received two bullets. A case has been lodged at the Sultanpuri police station and investigations are on,” said a senior police official from the district, adding that personal enmity could be the reason behind the attack.

He added that the assailants, whose number is not clear, used a unique modus-operandi to shoot the victim. “As Sanjay stood watching the wedding procession which was accompanied by sounds of crackers, the gun shots were initially mistaken to be crackers. Only when the bleeding Sanjay fell down, people realised that he was shot. By the time, the assailants had fled,” said the police.

The police has reasons to believe that the assailants knew that the marriage procession would pass through the area and so they waited for the opportune time to commit the crime.

In yet another incident of shooting reported from the Najafgarh area of west Delhi, a property dealer was shot at by bike-borne assailants last night.

Surinder Kumar, a resident of Mitarao village, received two bullets in the attack that took place not far from his house.

“Kumar was rushed to Ayushman Hospital in Dwarka, where he was operated upon. He is critical, but doctors are hopeful that he would pull it off,” said the police.

A case under section 307 of the IPC has been registered in this regard.

According to the police, besides property dealing, Sanjay was also engaged in supplying building material and business rivalry could be the reason behind the attack.

The senior naxal leader was today produced before chief metropolitan magistrate Kaveri Baweja, who after taking his application into records, sent him to judicial custody till December 25.

Earlier, the Delhi police, which on October 31 secured a green signal from a lower court to conduct narco-analysis test on Ghandy, had suffered a setback after the Delhi High Court accepted Ghandy’s plea that the test should not be conducted as its constitutional validity had been challenged before the Supreme Court.
