Congress councillor Anu Chatrath was elected unopposed as the 16th mayor of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation today after the Opposition alliance of BJP-SAD candidate Harjinder Kaur withdrew from the elections.

With the dip in mercury, the UT Education Department has made changes in the timings of all government schools from tomorrow. UT to outsource gardens’ upkeep
Chandigarh, January 1
In an important development, the Chandigarh Administration has decided to outsource the horticulture and maintenance of the gardens in the city. In the first phase, the administration will hand out the upkeep of Bougainvillea, Terraced Garden, Bamboo Gardens, Topiary Park and Hibiscus Garden, besides certain others.

Municipal Corporation moots revision of Advertisement Act

In order to tighten the noose around violators, who advertise their products by pasting them on walls without the permission of the authorities concerned, the municipal corporation has decided to revise the Advertisement Control Act 2009.

Enforcement drives failed to check road mishaps
Chandigarh, January 1
Strict enforcement drives against traffic violations failed to bring down deaths caused due to road accidents in the city in 2009. The traffic police realised over Rs 4 crore in terms of fines from traffic offenders, while the city recorded over 10 per cent rise in road accidents. According to sources in the accident cell of the Chandigarh traffic police, road mishaps claimed around 163 lives this year against 147 in 2008.

Boy dead, 8 hurt in road mishap

Babla remanded in judicial custody
Chandigarh, January 1
A local court today remanded Congress councillor Devinder Singh Babla in judicial custody till January 15. Babla, who was earlier remanded in three-day police custody in total, was today sent to 14-day judicial custody by duty magistrate Amit Sharma.

Cheating case against woman

A Dhanas resident accused a woman of duping him of Rs 1.50 lakh. Sanjay Kumar of Dhanas reported to the police that Surinder Kaur of Deep Complex Hallomajra had taken 1.5 lakh from him on December 3, 2007, promising to sell him a house in her locality.

Two killed in road accident
Chandigarh, January 1 Two persons were killed while three others were injured in two separate mishaps in the city last night. The police said Jatinder Singh of Jagatpura village, in his mid 20s, was killed after the Honda City car (CH 04 P 3974) he was driving overturned near the Sector 47 Gurdwara at 1.30 am today.

3 held for shoot-out incident

In the last night’s fire shoot-out incident in the godown area of Bhabat village, the local police booked three persons and recovered .315 country made pistol along with four mobile phones from the possession of Sandeep, hailing from Muzafarnagar, who was nabbed by family members of a businessman, whose godown they had gone to burgle.

Eleven-year-old Gursobha Singh, a student of Yadavindra Public School, Mohali, won the recently concluded Junior National Equestrian Championship 2009 in Delhi. After a brilliant performance in the FEI Children International Jumping Competition, Gursobha clinched two individual golds and two team silvers in the four-day championship organised by the 61st Cavalry (B Squadron) in collaboration with the Equestrian Federation of India.
