Abohar
Cotton processing halts
: The processing of cotton in 16 ginning and pressing factories at Abohar, the biggest cotton market of the region, came to a grinding halt on New Year’s day as the owners responded to a state-wide call for indefinite strike in protest against the non- cooperation of the state government. However, Harpal Singh Behal, secretary of the market committee here, said arrival of narma cotton at the local yard was confined to 600-700 quintals only since the industrialists had made the farmers known about their stir yesterday. Most farmers preferred to take back produce to their respective village. 

Camel cart mishap: Two camels were killed while four persons sustained injuries as a truck reportedly hit two camel carts at the city bypass here Friday morning. As per available information the truck was transporting furniture wood slabs from Kotkapura to Jodhpur while the camel carts carried wood pieces from village Hakimabad for sale at the local market. The collision occurred due to dense fog in the morning. The camels died on the spot while camel cart pullers Guljar Singh and Kehar Singh were injured. The truck too overturned resulting in injuries to driver Baljinder Singh. They were admitted to the Civil Hospital here. The police is investigating.

Award for Dr Sobti
:Dr MK Sobti was conferred with the best president local branch among all local branches in India. The award was given at the 84th All-India Medical Conference of Indian Medical Association in Hyderabad on December 27 and 28. It is for the first time that the branch president from Punjab has been given the award at the annual national conference.
The annual conference was attended by 2, 000 delegates. Dr Sobti, neurosurgeon, got this award for his leadership, hard work and meritorious performance. Dr Sobti, along with Dr Yash Sharma, president of IMA, Punjab, also attended the 70th central council meeting of IMA.

Brick kiln labourers:
Brick kiln labourers on Friday held a dharna and burnt the effigy of the deputy commissioner for not considering their demands. Addressing the dharna, labour leaders Sukhcharn Singh Danewalia and Nikka Singh Bhadurpur said the brick kiln owner at Bajewala had removed some labourers some time back and did not take them back. They alleged the brick kiln owner had received the provident fund share from the salaries of labourers but had not deposited it in their accounts . They demanded imposition of labour laws and that workers removed should be taken back.

Rotational irrigation plan: The Punjab irrigation department on Friday announced the rotational programme of irrigation during the current Rabi season through canal water from January 3- 10, this year. The channels of Sirhind canal system would run on a priority basis from Bathinda branch, Bist Doab, Sidhwan branch, Abohar branch and Patiala feeder, respectively. 

Canal irrigation: The state Irrigation Department on Friday announced the rotational programme of irrigation during the current Rabi season through canal water from January 3 to January 10. Channels of the Sirhind Canal System will run on a priority basis from Bathinda Branch, Bist Doab, Sidhwan  Branch, Abohar Branch and Patiala feeder, respectively.

Charas seized:
The police on Friday seized 4 kg charas from the possession of a person named Vithnu Bahadur. The accused was intercepted at Gunnu Nala in the interior part of the district where he was caught carrying charas clandestinely, said SP Madhu Sudan. The accused is a resident of Jassorgarh in Churah tehsil of the district.

SHIMLA
Protest march:
Lawyers on Friday staged a protest march in the town against the indifferent attitude of the high court with regard to their demand for review of the vacation schedule. Over 500 lawyers proceeded in a peace procession from the high court till the Ridge through the Mall Road. The members of the District Bar Association also joined the protesting lawyers.
