On cards: Strict action against polluting vehicles
Jalandhar, November 18 A meeting in this context was held at the secretariat and was presided over by IG Sanjiv Kalra and was attended by DC Ajeet Singh Pannu, SSP RK Jaiswal and other senior officers of the municipal corporation and the railways. A review meeting would be held every week to monitor the implementation of measures. Kalra took stock of the ground position and said some drastic measures had to be taken to ensure unhindered flow of traffic besides uprooting various structures which led to traffic bottlenecks. Traffic lights too needed to be installed at many places to regulate traffic. Pannu said they would coordinate with various departments to remove the impediments in the way of traffic. Work on the six-laning of the Jalandhar-Ludhiana highway, which also will result in the construction of over bridges at the Rama Mandi Chowk and the PAP traffic lights, would be completed by 2011. This would go a long way in tackling the major traffic problem at these places presently, he pointed out. He also informed that there were many trees on various approach roads to the city, which were the cause of fatal accidents. These would be felled by invoking provisions of Section 133 of the CrPC. The telecom and electricity power department too will be asked to remove all poles and other equipment which hamper traffic, he added. He also instructed the civic body officials to ban the practice of burning garbage and dry leaves which caused a lot of air pollution. Jaiswal said they would crack down on polluting vehicles, particularly autos, which were a major cause of pollution in the city. Only authorised autos will be allowed to ply on roads. In the light of High Court instructions, only CNG-run autos will be registered while the rest would be seized. As many as 20 polluting autos had been impounded, he added. Those who use pressure horns would also be challaned and the drive would last 15 days in the first phase. CCTV cameras would also be installed at major traffic lights, he revealed. He also appealed to the people to park their vehicles at the designated parking places to avoid any inconvenience since wrongly-parked vehicles would be towed away, he added. Similarly, railway officials said the ongoing construction work on the railway over bridge near Khalsa College, DAV College and Maqsudan would be completed by June. |
