This practice becomes more rampant during Diwali days. Youths ‘kidnap’ company owner

The police said Harish was also running a cosmetic firm at some other place earlier. According to the woman, they alleged that the owner had cheated them when he was in the previous firm. The police said they had contacted other police stations, but found no clue. Jwalapur residents take to streets
Haridwar, October 13 Jwalapur, a sub-urban township situated very close to Haridwar, is one of the rapidly expanding urban markets. It is known for retail markets of apparel and furniture. Residents of Jwalapur have been demanding its inclusion in the mela area for a long time. Now, they have taken to streets for its inclusion in the mela area. Various social organisations and traders took out a massive march to press the authorities for the acceptance of their demand. Led by Chaudhari Afzal Alvi, district head of the youth cell of the Uttarakhand Kranti Manch (UKM), residents of Jwalapur raised slogans against the mela administration and the state government for ignoring their justifiable demand. Many locals joined the protesters on the march route. At a railway crossing, the march led to a massive traffic jam. Justifying the demand for the inclusion of Jwalapur in the mela are, JP Pandey, chief of the UKM said infrastructure and development of Jwalapur was imperative for a successful conduct of the Maha Kumbh in Haridwar. “Jwalapur sustains a major population pressure due to 200-odd factories set up under SIDCUL and situated on its periphery. Besides, it’s not any more a separate place as it’s aligned with Haridwar city,” said Pandey. While accusing the BJP-led government of neglecting Jwalapur, Shahnawaz Khan of the minority cell alleged that the BJP was deliberately maintaining silence on their demand. “As half of Jwalapur population comprises Muslims, the BJP-led government doesn’t seem interested in developing this area. But we have always been helpful in a smooth conduct of Kumbh and other holy occasions for decades,” said Shahnawaz. Later, an effigy of the state government was burnt. The agitators said they would intensify the agitation if their demands were not met within a week. |
Govt makes fresh move
Raju William Tribune News Service
Dehradun, October 13 Chief Secretary IK Pande today confirmed the state government’s fresh move in which it has made a case before the union government to extend the package up to 2020 as given to the North-East states. The BJP-led state government under former Chief Minister BC Khanduri had prepared the case for an extension up to 2013. But, his successor Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank has demanded it up to 2020. Not only the BJP, but its main rival Congress has also been demanding that the package, which laid out the foundation of the industrial development in the state, should be extended. Before its announcement in 2003 during the tenure of the NDA government, the state had almost zero industrial base. Originally it was to last till 2013, but the new UPA government at the Centre reduced it to 2010. During a visit to Dehradun a couple of days ago, Rawat had claimed that though the UPA government was very much willing to extend the package up to 2013, the same could not be done due to a stiff opposition from other states. Industries Minister, Punjab, Manoranjan Kalia had recently demanded that the same kind of package be given to his state. Earlier, Rajya Sabha member from Himachal Pradesh and union minister Anand Sharma had reportedly lobbied for an extension of the package. Given the direction of the UPA government’s economic policies, particularly the taxation regime, the industry in Uttarakhand was not much hopeful of a favourable response on the issue. Chairman, Industries Association of Uttarakhand (IAU), Pankaj Gupta said if at all an extension was granted, it would be a political decision. So, it will not be off the mark to say that the fresh move of the state government asking for an extension of the industrial package is more like a political move to show that the UPA government is against the interests of the state. |

Congress workers, led by legislators Tilak Raj Behad, Shailendra Singhal and Gopal Singh Rana, were holding a day-long dharna at the Ambedkar Park adjacent to the Gandhi Park where the Chief Minister was to hold the programme. The Congress workers started raising slogans as soon as the Chief Minister arrived at the venue. They were protesting against the failure of the state BJP government to sanction funds for the proposed Rudrapur Medical College. They said the foundation stone of the proposed college was laid during the previous Congress regime but the present BJP government had diverted the funds from the sanctioned budget to another medical college at Srinagar in Garhwal. They alleged that the Chief Minister was also not interested in the medical college project. However, Dr Nishank said those were false accusations by the Congress leaders. “My government is committed to build Rudrapur Medical College,” he added. |
