12 days on, work yet to start on Gang Canal
Roorkee, October 10 “We have not even seen any official making any visit to assess the job. The stink has made the life of persons working or living along the banks of the canal miserable,” said Arshad Khan, a fruit seller near the main bridge over the canal. Goldy, another shopkeeper in the main market, lamented, “It is impossible to understand why the flow was stopped when the authorities did not intend to initiate any cleaning or repair work.” Twelve days have already passed and only eight days are left after which the flow will have to be resumed. “Will the authorities be able to complete the job in such a short span,” asked Manjeet Singh, a resident, while indicating areas on local ‘ghat’ and other spots along the canal that have suffered damage. Reportedly, the budget
by the UP government for the purpose has not been released. Residents here maintain that the authorities seldom do any work after stopping the flow for 20 days every year. The canal, which starts from Haridwar, caters to over 5 lakh farmers of several districts of the state and Uttar Pradesh. Besides, the supply of drinking water is also made to some parts of Delhi. |
