BJP fields young faces
Chandigarh, September 22 Perhaps, that’s why, the party in charge of Haryana affairs, Vijay Goel, too, began his press conference here today on this note. “We have given representation to all sections of society. The average age of our candidates is 45 years. They have been chosen with the objective of playing a long innings in their respective areas. We not only want them to contest this election but nurse their constituencies for elections in the years to come,” he stated. Though conscious of the Congress strategy to field young faces, especially since the arrival of Rahul Gandhi on the scene, Goel was quick to deny that the party’s changed stance to project a young look had anything to do with the “Rahul effect”. Holding out the promise of “good governance as has been witnessed in BJP-ruled states”, Goel said the BJP had coined the slogan of “sarkar badlo, halaat badlo” for this election. “We will come out with our manifesto next week. It will not only list our goals but explain how we intend to achieve these. The Bhupinder Singh Hooda-led government only made empty promises. Where are the jobs, schoolteachers, surplus power, Sutlej-Yamuna Link Canal, water in the Hansi-Butana link and factories in 64 SEZs? On ground, there is nothing at all,” Goel said. |
Panipat: Several disgruntled BJP leaders quit posts
Panipat, September 22 The decision of the party’s CEC to field Sanjay Bhatia from Panipat and Surinder Ahlawat from Panipat (rural) irked a group of BJP men in the district, who claimed that these leaders were not in a position to win the elections and the party should reconsider its
decision. District president of the BJP Ramesh Batra said both the candidates were not the right choice given the political circumstances prevailing in the state. He said both had lost badly in the 2005 Assembly elections and they had even lost their security deposits in those elections. He claimed that both the leaders were not in a position to perform any better even this time. He alleged that one of the two candidates had affiliations with senior leadership of the “sangathan” on the basis of which they had managed to get the party ticket.
However, it was not going to benefit the party in any way, he claimed. Those who collectively put in their papers included three councillors of the local civic body, Harish Sharma, Raj Kumar Saini and
Satbir; president of the Nagar Mandal Surinder Tuteja, senior vice-president of the district unit Ramesh
Batra, Anil Madan, Suresh and all members of the Marg Darshak Mandal of the local unit, including Manohar
Suneja, Lal Chand Chabbra, Baljit Rai, Ram Lal Goyal and Joytika Saxsena. These leaders, however, did not resign from the primary membership of the party. Meanwhile, Sanjay Bhatia said some local leaders had been opposing his nomination. However, since the party had given him the ticket, these leaders should follow ethics and support him in the elections. On the issue of disciplinary action against the protesting leaders, Bhatia said it was for the senior leaders to decide on that. He, however, maintained that he had been visiting all disgruntled party men seeking their support in the elections. He claimed that the local electorate had extended an overwhelming response to the party and the chances of his winning the elections were very bright. Bhatia seemed unfazed by the rumblings in the party cadres. |

Anil Vij gets cold reception
BJP activists walk out as he reaches party office Amrita Dhaliwal Tribune News Service
Ambala, September 22 A few went as far as stating that the BJP was ‘crumbling’. A few questioned the wisdom of fielding an outsider. In the end, they chose to leave before Vij arrived at the party office. Vij came along with his supporters of the Vikas Parishad. He maintained that he had always been a BJP loyalist and that he had not joined any other party after leaving the BJP in 1995. “I chose to contest as an Independent candidate and form my own party.” Vij announced the merger of his Vikas Parishad with the BJP and said all legal aspects were being looked into. On the cold reception given to him by local partymen, he said small differences persisted and he would try his best to resolve these. Vij has won the three elections, twice as Independent and once on the BJP ticket. He lost in 2005 by a narrow margin of 600 votes. Anil Vij has a clean image and is expected to give a tough fight to the Congress. |

BSP workers burn effigy of MP Jagdish Rana

The BSP has significant presence in the district with support in rural belts. The BSP gave a tough fight to the Congress in three of the four assembly segments. Chowdhary said he had decided to contest as Independent from Radaur. “My supporters are aggrieved that despite the support of party general secretary Man Singh Manhera, Jagdish Rana managed a ticket for Ashwani Rana,” he claimed. |

Manifesto Tribune News Service
Sirsa, September 22 Amarjit Kaur, national secretary of the CPI, and Inderjit Singh, state secretary of the CPM, released the manifesto during a press conference here. The parties have promised to raise issues concerning the common man like terrorism, gender bias and retrieving agriculture from the present crisis. They also favour a ban on the “extra-judicial activities” of khap panchayats. Speaking to mediapersons, both leaders alleged that the Congress had failed to keep its promises. “Thousands of acres have been acquired for establishing 60 special economic zones (SEZs) in Haryana but not a single industry has come up in the past four and a half years,” alleged Inderjit Singh. Meanwhile, CPM candidate from Sirsa Balbir Kaur Gandhi and CPI candidate from Rania Swaran Singh Virk filed their nomination papers today. The Left parties also organised a public meeting in the local Nehru Park after the filing of nominations. |
In Sirsa, Congress rivals steal the march
Sirsa, September 22 HJC candidate Veer Bhan Mehta will file his nomination papers of September 23.Addressing mediapersons here recently, Mehta said party supremo Kuldeep Bishnoi will address a meeting here on this occasion. Padam Jain, INLD nominee and district president of the party, will, however, file his papers on September 24 in a simple manner. The party has not organised any rally or public meeting on that occasion as leaders of the party would be busy in preparations for the INLD rally at Jind on September 25 to mark the birth anniversary of former Deputy Prime Minister Devi Lal. The campaigning by most of the nominees so far has been a low-key affair. Nominees and their supporters have been trying to woo voters by organising corner meetings in towns and villages falling under the constituency. Gopal Kanda is ahead of others in campaigning as he has better resources than his competitors. The Congress and the BSP are yet to announce their nominees and begin campaigning in
Sirsa. |
Jangir Samaj seeks Cong ticket
Rewari, September 22 Jangra said there were over 10 lakh voters of the Jangir

36 more diarrhoea cases, chlorine tablets distributed
Panipat, September 22 According to officials, steps had been taken in the colony to contain the disease. The administration has so far confirmed five deaths due to diarrhoea. These included four children and a teenager. Doctors at the Civil Hospital maintained that the situation was under control and a number of patients had been discharged after treatment. Diarrhoea cases have been pouring in from the Batra Colony for the past 15 days. The reason being cited for the outbreak of the disease is sewage water getting mixed with drinking water because of illegal connections in the locality. The administration has disconnected the illegal water connections and distributed chlorine tablets in the area to check the spread of the
disease. |
