INLD, BJP look to each other’s turf
New Delhi, September 21 The off-and-on relationship between the two parties broke off a few weeks ago and they are now ready with strategies to “expand” their respective bases and poach on the rival’s turf. Sitting in his Delhi office, Ajay Chautala today blamed the BJP for the break-up saying it “uses” its allies. “Our vote bank is committed and we are making good progress in urban areas,” he claimed. Countering him, Vijay Goel, BJP party in charge for Haryana, said this evening: “We broke off as the BJP being a national party and had to go it alone and build its base in rural areas. Our ‘gaon chalo abhiyan’ will show results in these polls”. He claimed that at least in rural areas, landed farmers had started listening to the BJP viewpoint. Chautala said:“We will target the Hooda government on the worsening law and order situation. People are feeling insecure. “Also, the party is keeping its options open in case of a hung House,” Chautala said, adding that his party had got “strong” candidates in urban areas. Asked if the INLD could go with the BJP at the national level, Chautala said: “We have to support an anti-Congress front. There are umpteen possibilities.” Goel maintained that the BJP’s fight was with the Congress and not the INLD or the Bhajan Lal-led Haryana Janhit Congress. “We are the alternative in Haryana and not these two”. Only two days ago, INLD supremo Om Prakash Chautala had taken pot- shots at various parties, saying the BJP could not win a single seat in the state as its reins were in the hands of leaders who had no mass base. “We have always sided with the BJP to strengthen the hands of anti-Congress parties. The BJP took this as our weakness”. He had dubbed the Haryana Janhit Congress as a “B-team of the Congress” and ruled out the possibility of a post-poll alliance with the it. Chautala did not rule the possibility of a post-poll alliance with the BSP. |
BJP fields Anil Vij from Ambala cantt
Ambala, September 21 A three-time MLA, Vij has won the elections twice as an Independent. He contested the elections for the first time on the BJP ticket. He was expelled from the BJP for anti-party activities. He contested the elections as an Independent in 1996 and 2000 and 2005. He lost in 2005 to DK Bansal, sitting MLA from Congress, by a mere 550 votes. The decision to field Vij from Ambala cantonment does not seem to have gone down well with local workers of the BJP who met at the party office and stated they would oppose the move. A senior leader, Ravinder Dhawan, said the workers had not been consulted by the party high command before allotting the ticket to Vij. They alleged that Vij had supported the Congress during the recent parliamentary elections and the high command should allot the ticket to a BJP loyalist instead. |

Tohana: No rat race for this assembly seat
Tohana (Fatehabad), September 21 Tohana was represented by Paramvir Singh, a former parliamentary secretary, in the dissolved assembly. Except for a few occasions, the seat has been contested or represented by his family since 1967, when his father, Harpal Singh, a veteran Congress leader, won his first election here. Harpal Singh contested and won all elections till 1977 when his cousin, Col Bhim Singh, contested instead.Harpal Singh later returned to the poll arena and except for his defeats in 1987 and 1996, he remained in the saddle. The only occasion when someone outside Harpal Singh’s family was nominated from here by the Congress was during a byelection in 1985 when the then CM, Bhajan Lal, fielded his kin Hanuman Bishnoi. Harpal Singh’s son, Paramveer Singh, contested the last elections in 2000 and 2005, losing the first to Nishan Singh of the INLD and winning the last one. This time only three applications for the seat were received when Congress observer Avtar Henry arrived in Fatehabad to meet ticket aspirants. One of those belonged to Paramvir Singh’s brother Randhir Singh, president of the District Congress Committee. Nishan Singh, who has been fielded by the INLD, has contested the last three elections consecutively. The name of Subhash Barala, nominated by the BJP, was a foregone conclusion and the BSP candidate, Sanjay Sharma, has been campaigning in the assembly segment ever since he joined the party three years ago. The police stated that he was assisted by Sadhvi Gobind Bharti in alluring the girl to a room where he tried to molest her. However, as the girl raised an alarm, her parents who were in the vicinity reached there and rescued their daughter from the clutches of the priest. The girl’s father later reported the matter to the Sadar police station after which both priest and the sadhvi were called to the police station where the swami confessed to have committed the crime. Finally, HP depot to be shifted
Ambala, September 21 Ambala DC Sameer Pal Srow said the district administration had cleared the file for allotment of site next to the IOC. “This was a long-pending demand by the HP officials. Also, this was required from the security point of view. We have written to the government an official announcement is expected after the elections.” HP officials were, however, unaware of the decision and a senior official said they had not heard anything. The HP depot is located less than 500 metres from GT Road and the railway station. The company officials had repeatedly written to the government to shift the depot, which is spread over three acres. Officials at the depot were always worried at the possibility of an accident, especially during Divali, and because of its proximity to the busy highway. The HPCL depot has been here since 1950. It was renovated in 1990 and ever since it has been supplying to depots in Haryana and Himachal Pradesh. Officials said the HPCL too was looking to shifting to a site next to the IOC depot. |

INLD cannot be trusted, warns Congress
Sirsa, September 21 Ved Parkash Vidrohi, spokesman for the Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee, said the move also proved that the two political parties had been willfully letting the issue linger on for selfish reasons. He said while the Congress government had constructed the Hansi-Butana canal at a cost of Rs 360 crore for equitable distribution of water among all parts of the state, Chautala and Badal had been trying to create hurdles and controversies. The Congress leader appealed to the people to see through the game plan of the Chautalas and teach the INLD a lesson in the elections. |
No place for Chander Mohan in party: HJC chief
Chandigarh, September 21 “Chander Mohan is in the Congress and there is no question of giving him ticket from the HJC. He has not even approached us. One thing should be very clear that there is no place for him in our party at this point of time,” Kuldeep Bishnoi told reporters here. “We can think of giving ticket to Seema Bishnoi (Chander Mohan’s wife), if she approaches us. However, in such matters the final decision will be of our party’s high command,”he said. Chander Mohan is a four-time Congress legislator from the Kalka Assembly seat, which is now divided into Kalka and Panchkula seats. Talking about joining hands with any other party, Kuldeep Bishnoi said: “There is no possibility of making an alliance with any other political party. We have realised one thing that people never vote for alliances, they always vouch for individual’s merits. It is totally false that Bhajan Lal had met BJP leader Lal Krishan Advani in New Delhi to strike an alliance with the BJP”. Kuldeep Bishnoi and Bhajan Lal were suspended from the Congress after they floated their own political outfit in 2007. The father-son duo was upset with the Congress leadership since Bhajan Lal was denied the Chief Minister’s post even though he led the party to one of its biggest victories in the 2005 Assembly polls. The HJC yesterday declared its second list of 32 candidates. Earlier, it had released a list of 26 candidates for the 90-seat Assembly polls. Bishnoi is contesting from Adampur seat in Hisar district, considered a stronghold of Bhajan Lal. Whereas Bhajan Lal, lone winner from HJC in the May LS elections, is not contesting. The Congress won nine out of the 10 LS seats in the May general elections this year. The Congress is yet to announce its candidates. Last date of filing nominations in Haryana is September 25. Elections will be held Oct 13 and the counting will be on Oct 22. — IANS |
