Their brief honeymoon with the number one tag over and their batting frailties exposed, India will have a score to settle when they take on Sri Lanka in the cricket tri-series final here tomorrow. Serena upset

New York, September 13
Belgian comeback queen Kim Clijsters knocked out Serena Williams in a wildly controversial finish on Saturday to advance to the final of the U.S. Open and become the poster girl for working mothers. Just weeks after returning to the tour from a two-year break to start a family, Clijsters beat the defending champion 6-4, 7-5 after a day-long rain delay at Flushing Meadows.

At 5-6, 15-30 down in the second set, Williams whacked her second serve but the lineswoman called her on a foot-fault that put her at match point down. The American’s subsequent expletive-laced tirade directed at the lineswoman resulted in a point penalty - and the end of the match.

“I swear to God I’m... going to take this... ball and shove it down your... throat, you hear that? I swear to God,” Williams said. After the line-judge reported the second seed to the umpire for verbal abuse, Williams added: “I never said I would kill you, are you serious?”

In Sunday’s final, Clijsters will face Danish teenager Caroline Wozniacki, who defeated unseeded and error-prone Belgian Yanina Wickmayer 6-3, 6-3 in the other semifinal. In Sunday’s other men’s semifinal, five-times champion Roger Federer faces fourth-seeded Serb Novak Djokovic, both players well-rested after having three days off.

The contentious ending of Clijsters’s match marred her well-earned victory. “It’s unfortunate that a match that I was playing so well at had to end that way,” said Clijsters, the 2005 Open champion and former world number one.

Del Potro sends Nadal packing

Argentina's Juan Martin Del Potro bludgeoned Rafael Nadal 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 at the U.S. Open on Sunday to reach his first grand-slam final. The sixth seed overpowered the Spaniard in two hours, 20 minutes of outstanding hitting to set up a final against either five-times champion Roger Federer or fourth seed Novak Djokovic of Serbia.

The first set was a story of missed opportunities as Nadal squandered three break point chances, while the Argentine broke twice, in the fourth and eighth games. The pattern was repeated in the second set and though Nadal continued to fight in the third, Del Potro was too strong and cruised to a comprehensive victory.

Yuki’s campaign ends

Top seed Yuki Bhambri’s title hopes went up in smoke after a stunning straight-set defeat to unseeded local favourite Chase Buchanan in the boys’ singles quarterfinal of the US Open here. The match, delayed by a day due to persistent rain ended in a heartbreaking 3-6, 6-7 (4-7) loss for the Indian. The match was shifted to indoor courts and the changed conditions perhaps adversely affected the reigining Australian Open champion. — Agencies

Johl clinches title

Chandigarh, September 13
Amandeep Johl, who has remained in limbo for quite some time, struck a bright patch clinching the rain-hit PGTI Players Championship on the par-72 greens of the Chandigarh Golf Club here today. This was the first major win for the 40-yar-old Chandigarh golfer who went in for a change in his drive a few months back. The triumph got him the winner’s prize money of Rs 4,84,950 in the Rs 30 lakh prize money tournament.

Amandeep Johl clinched the title defeating Ashok Kumar in the playoff after the two had tied at four under 134 in the two-round tournament. “I am happy, but then it is time to move on”, said Amandeep, who is seriously thinking of hanging up his boots. “I pulled out of the Macau Asian Tour event to play on home ground. That is what I did. I played for the sake of playing. Triumph was a happy ending,” he added.

Johl, who received the cheque and trophy from Chandigarh Golf Club president Birinder Singh Gill, will be playing in the DLF Masters, but will stay away from the Haryana Open at Panchkula. “I need time now for a big project that I and Rishi Narain are working on - a sports club spread on a 20-acre area in Noida. It will have a golf driving range, horse riding course and tennis courts to start with”, said Johl.

Defending champion Harendra P. Gupta of Chandigarh, was tied for the third slot at two under 134, along with Ranjit Singh, also from Chandigarh, Rafick Mollah, Asian Tour star Gaurav Ghei and Kunal Bhasin.

Amandeep sent birdies on the second, third and sixth to be three under. But then a bogey on the eighth saw him take the turn at two under. After bogeying the 10th, Johl sank an eagle on the par-five 13th. He conceded bogeys on the 14th and 18th interspersed with a birdie on the 16th to finish with a 66 and had to battle it out in a playoff against Ahok.

Amandeep’s drive on the first playoff hole (18th) saw the ball landing on the rough on the right side. Ashok found the rough on the opposite side. Then Johl’s approach barely overshot the green. On the other hand Ashok chipped out to the edge of the water hazard.

Ashok’s third shot landed on the green, but 20 ft from the cup. At the end while Ashok three-putted from 20 ft for a double bogey, Johl pocketed the winner’s cheque sinking his putt for a par.

India eye title, revenge

Colombo, September 13
Their brief honeymoon with the number one tag over and their batting frailties exposed, India will have a score to settle when they take on Sri Lanka in the cricket tri-series final here tomorrow. The six-wicket win over New Zealand was the perfect start for Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his men as it not only booked them a place in the final but also made them the number one ODI side in the world.

Barely 24 hours at the top and the joy had just started to sink in when Sri Lanka inflicted on them a moral-shattering 139-run defeat in their league encounter. What would worry the Indian think-tank is that on all counts Sri Lanka proved much superior.

After drab low-score matches, the hosts piled up a massive 307 for six wickets, suggesting the Indian attack was far from intimidating. And then the canny Angello Mathews, with his six-wicket haul, proved that there are enough chinks in the Indian batting armour as the visitors folded for 168 inside 38 overs.

It has been more than evident that despite best of efforts from both Sachin Tendulkar and Dinesh Karthik, India is missing its regular opening pair of Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir. The rollicking start that the team is used to has not been witnessed so far even though Tendulkar looked in good nick in both the matches.

The top order clearly has a brittle look about it and the return of someone as experienced as Rahul Dravid has not been able to gloss over the harsh reality. Yuvraj Singh came here as a possible candidate to snatch the number one batsman’s tag from his captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni but the left-hander has looked more impressive with the ball than with the bat.

Dhoni and Suresh Raina played sensibly against New Zealand to guide the side home but they could not repeat it when the chips were down against Sri Lanka. Yousuf Pathan got just one chance so far in the series and could not make the most of it. — PTI

Five point someone
Sutil finishes fourth, gets five points as Barrichello wins Italian Gp

Monza, September 13
A pit-stop fumble cost Force India their second successive podium finish but Adrian Sutil took the chequered flag fourth to win five invaluable points from today's Italian Grand Prix here today.

Starting second on the grid, Sutil could have done an encore of Force India's podium finish in Belgium but the German fumbled in his second pit stop, missing the mark and nearly knocking out two pit crew. His teammate Vitantonio Liuzzi had a heartbreaking debut as the Italian rose to fourth only to retire after 23 laps with a gearbox gremlin.

It was a one-two for Brawn with Rubens Barrichello beating teammate Jenson Button by 2.8s. Force India now have 13 points and the vastly improved outfit would now look forward to make the most of the remaining four races of the season.

Despite the pit-stop goof up, Sutil never gave up and was hot on the heels of Kimi Raikkonen's Kinetic Energy Recovery System-powered Ferrai car even though he could not overtake the Finn. The duel with Raikkonen was the highlight of Sutil's spectacular race even though the Force India driver did not manage to get past his Ferrari opponent. Raikkonen and Sutil in fact pitted on the same lap but the extra time that Sutil needed proved decisive in the end, denying him his first podium place.

This was Sutil's first points for the Silverstone-based outfit and his cause was helped by Lewis Hamilton's last lap crash when the McLaren driver was running third. Giancarlo Fisichella, who had recorded Force India's first pole and podium finish in Belgium last week, came ninth in his debut for Ferrari. — PTI
