Abohar
Pirated CDs, DVDs recovered:
In a major offensive against the sale of pirated and obscene CDs and DVDs, the district police raided six shops in different localities and arrested one person each, an official spokesman informed on Sunday evening. As per the information available, 202 VDC, 3 DVDs were recovered during the raid at a shop run allegedly by Pawan Kumar in Jawahar Nagar, 180 cassettes from Mohan Lal in Purani Abadi, 110 CDs and DVDs and from Deepak Kumar in Indira colony, 360 CDs, DVDs and MP3 and others from Saurav in Vinoba Basti and 750 CDs, DVDs and MP3 from Inderjit in Vinoba Basti, the police claimed.

Swami Vivekananda remembered:
Swami Vivekananda’s Study Circle and the Vigilant Citizens’ Forum on Sunday celebrated the anniversary of Swami’s Chicago address that was delivered at World Parliament of Religions on September 11, 1893. C.S. Talwar, additional secretary, Public Works Department, and Dr Jairup Singh, vice-chancellor of the Central University, attended celebrations. Dr Manmohan Kumar Bansal, Dr Harnek Singh Bhangu and Dr Anil Goyal were honoured on the occasion.

Kavi darbaar held: A ‘kavi darbar’ and ‘sangeet mai sham’ was organised on Sunday to celebrate the third anniversary of Upkar Birdh Sewa Sammiti. Deputy commissioner Rahul Tewari, Saroop Chand Singla of the SAD (B), Gurmeet Dhaliwal from Baba Farid Institute of Higher and Foreign Studies and Punjabi Ghalib Man Singh Ji Mann attended the function.

Fazilka
Foundation stones laid:
Fazilka MLA Surjit Kumar Jyani and the Municipal Council president Anil Kumar Sethi laid foundation stones of different development projects in the MC colony of ward 4 on Sunday. An amount of Rs 15,00,000 would be spent to lay the roads in the remaining streets. A park in the colony would also be developed. Besides, Jyani also laid the foundation stone for the construction of the roads and lanes in the slum area of Kanshi Ram colony. MC president Anil Sethi disclosed that the street light of this colony would be linked with a separate power line to ensure uninterrupted streetlight to this area. MLA Jyani said that this year is being observed as a development year and his target for this year is to brick-line all the streets and roads of the town, providing 100 per cent streetlights in the town and other basic amenities. Market Committee chairman Ashok Jairath, Dr Ramesh Verma, Jagdish Verma, Neela Ram Neena and Ravinder Bhateja all municipal councillors, BJP Fazilka unit president Satish Setia were also present.

Minor raped:
A minor (11) was raped on Wednesday. The father of the victim, complained to the police Amritpal Singh, alias Pala, son of Joginder Singh, living near their house at Kothe Patti Mohabbat on the outskirts of the town, entered their house on Wednesday and raped his daughter. The police had registered a case against under Section 376 of the IPC at the police station (rural). The police was reluctant to register an FIR though the report of the incident was written in the daily register on the same day.The girl was admitted to the hospital in the evening and swab taken for clinical examination.

Gurdaspur bag trophy:
Gurdaspur players clinched the overall trophy of the 31st Punjab State Judo Championship held at BMD Public School, Sector 63, on Sunday.

Nawanshahr
Polio drops:
A team of the Health Department, led by District Health and Family Welfare Officer Dr Surinder Ganger, on Saturday visited slum areas of Rahon and adjoining villages to administer polio drops to the children in the age group of 0-5 years. The team visited 103 jhuggis and administered polio drops to as many as 232 children belonging to migratory labourers.

SANGRUR
RTI Act awareness:
Members the People for Democratic Reforms and Governance, the Scientific Awareness and Social Welfare Forum, and the People for Transparency, all NGOs on Sunday educated residents of Guru Nanak Colony here about the RTI Act and spending of funds by the Municipal Council (MC) on mohalla sanitation committees in the area. Pamphlets containing names of safai karamcharis and office-bearers of six sanitation panels were also distributed among residents.

Trials for handball team tomorrow: The UT education department will conduct the under-14 national trials for girls’ handball team at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 21, on September 15 at 9 am. Players should be born on or after January 1, 1986, and should be studying in Class VIII or below.

KURUKSHETRA
Elected:
Jagjit Singh Virk, founder-president of Senior Citizens Forum, Kurukshetra, has been re-elected as president of the Forum for consecutive 15th year here on Sunday. Meanwhile, the forum’s secretary-cum-treasurer SK Shahi presented its annual account that was approved by the general body. Shahi also apprised the house with the last year’s development and activities. The general body also decided to celebrate elders’ day on October 1.

REWARI
Dowry harassment: 5 booked:
The Rampura police has booked five persons, all residents of Goliaki village 10 km from here, on charges of harassment for dowry and wrongful confinement on a complaint filed by Preeti of Mandpura village of Gurgaon district. A case has been registered against Preeti’s husband Parvinder Yadav, father-in-law Ram Mehar Yadav, mother-in-law Savitri Devi and two others. In her complaint Preeti has alleged that since her marriage to Parvinder on February 29, 2008, she was persistently subjected to cruel treatment for dowry by her in-laws. She further alleged that she was locked up in a room, mercilessly beaten and also administered poison by her in-laws on Saturday.

Appointed: BSP leader Vijay Somany has been appointed general secretary of the state BSP and also in charge of party affairs in the Mahendergarh-Bhiwani parliamentary constituency. An announcement to this effect was made by Man Singh Manehra, BSP national general secretary and in charge of party affairs in the state, in Rohtak on Friday. Somany said the BSP was upbeat about its poll prospects and list of party candidates would be released on September 21.

Pollution check drive: As many as 160 motorcycles, scooters and other two-wheelers were checked free of charge for pollution at a camp held by Rotary Club, Rewari, here today. Congress leader Capt Ajay Singh Yadav, who inaugurated the camp, praised services being rendered by the club for public welfare.

Zonal youth festival:
Forty five colleges will participate in zonal youth festival of Kurukshetra University for Sirsa zone to be held in JCD Vidyapeeth from September 25-27. Kuldeep Singh Dhinsa, director general of the college, said representatives of about 30 colleges were present in a meeting held here on Saturday in connection with the arrangements. Colleges falling under Sirsa and Fatehabad district and those in Narwana town of Jind district come under the zone.

SONEPAT
Miscreants nabbed:
The police has nabbed four miscreants identified as Praveen of Jharonthi, Anil of Nandnaur, Tike Ram alias Tikki of Baroli and Anil of Farmana and seized three country-made pistols and live cartridges from their possession. According to SP Mahender Singh Sheoran, a case has been registered against them under the Arms Act. The accused have been remanded in judicial custody. They have confessed to have been involved in crimes, including loot, dacoity and attempt to murder, he added.

Extend deadline: BJP: Demanding an extension in the deadline for regularisation of houses and shops, state media in charge of the BJP Rajiv Jain has opposed issuing of notices under the Punjab Scheduled Roads Act. He pointed out that though September 15 had been set as the deadline, it had so far not been decided which areas were under the jurisdiction of the municipal council and under the Country and Town Planning Department. Jain also demanded a decrease in the regularisation fee of Rs 500 per sq m.

YAMUNANAGAR
Prof found dead:
Prof NK Bedi (60) was found dead at his residence here on Saturday. He is believed to have been attacked by sharp-edged weapons. A head injury is suspected to be the cause of death, the police said. Prof Bedi, who had retired from MLN College, was teaching English at DAV College for Girls. He lived alone in his house in Model Town. A case has been registered.

Protest over girl’s passport:
Residents of Mehndar village of Poonch district Friday held a protest outside the office of the Regional Passport Officer in Jammu alleging that the department was “unduly harassing” a girl applicant in issuing her the passport for the past seven months. Local SHO Mirza Sultan along with other police personnel tried to pacify the protesters. Regional passport officer Ashok K. Magotra said: “All allegations are false”.

Convention held: Panun Kashmir on Sunday held a day-long annual national convention at Abhinav Theatre to pay tribute and to remember those who sacrificed their precious lives for some noble cause 20 years before. Kashmiri Pandits observe September 14 as their Martyr’s Day after their exodus from the land of their origin.

RAJOURI
Demand for College, hospital:
Residents of Sunderbani have urged upon the state government to set up a government degree college in the area to remove “educational backwardness”. Along with demanding a degree college, vice-chairman of Sunderbani muncipal committee Joginder Gupta and other prominent citizens have sought setting up of a trauma hospital in the area since it is along Jammu Poonch National Highway, which is highly accident-prone.

Woman dead: A young woman died after allegedly consuming poisonous substance in Bathuni area near here on Saturday. Local sources said Shahnaz Begum of the Bathuni area was admitted in the district hospital Rajouri after she consumed some poisonous substance.

Honour for her work on breast cancer

An alumna of Christian Medical College, Ludhiana and lecturer in community health nursing, Gian Sagar College of Nursing, Radha Saini (29) has been granted Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) fellowship , New Delhi, for research in bioethics funded by NIH and Forgarty International, USA.

She has done a paper on , Nurses and Bioethics, highlighting unethical and unlawful practices which use poor patients as guinea pigs for pharmaceutical company - sponsored clinical trials, violative of human rights and ethics.

Even when she was undergraduate she was invited by university of British Columbia to present paper at international research conference held in Vancouver, Canada.

For her dedication to disseminating knowledge of early detection, prevention and control of breast cancer she he has been invited to present paper at Indian Cooperative Oncology Networks (ICON) International Cancer Conference in Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai from September 18 to 20 and ISNCC 16 th International Conference to be held in the USA, from March 7 to March 11 next year.

She has 40 publications in international and national journals apart from keynote addresses at national and international conferences and seminars.
