Railway Link
Ropar, September 13 The procedure started after the Central government signalled to start ground work on the 20-km stretch, covering 24 border villages in Ropar and Bilaspur districts of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. Ropar Deputy Commissioner Priyank Bharti said the Union railway ministry had already sanctioned Rs 350.33 crore as the first installment towards initiation of ground work for the broad gauge railway line to Himachal Pradesh. The total estimated cost of the project to be completed by 2015 would be about Rs 1,047 crore, of which 75 per cent is to be borne by the Centre and the remaining cost by Himachal Pradesh, he said. Bharti added that 235 acre 8 kanal and 17 marla land belonging to 14 villages of Punjab would be acquired. These villages include Nangli, Kalitran, Bhanupalli, Jandla, Bhalowal, Daroli, Thallua and Jindwari of Nangal sub-division and Gambhirpur, Behlu, Surewal, Samlah and Mahiwal of Anandpur Sahib sub-division. However, till now, there was no proposal from the Railways to study the feasibility of Baddi-Nalagarh-Rupnagar railway line, he added. "To cater to the needs of Himachal fruit growers, preliminary survey of Bhanupali-Bilaspur-Bairi railway line was started in 1985 by IRCON. Subsequently, the RITES reassessed the proposal for techno-economic viability of the project. “The railway link is sure to boost economic activity in the region and promote tourism, beside reducing vehicular traffic pressure on roads," said Bharti. |

CCTV camera exposes bribery at railway station
Chandigarh, September 13 Ramkrishna and Naresh Kumar were caught red handed on the CCTV footage harassing Kunal, a 16-year-old boy, who was waiting at the station to board the late night Kalka mail to Delhi. Besides, after forcefully extracting Rs 2,000 from Kunal, the ASIs forcefully made him board the train. However, he jumped from the other coach, further ahead at the station platform, and immediately informed Railway Police Force (RPF) officials. During initial inquiries, both GRP officials denied any such instance. However, the CCTV camera footage spilled the beans where both the officials could be clearly seen harassing Kunal. Both the officials were suspended last night. In another instance, an RPF constable at the railway station successfully traced a thief on Friday who had stolen a lady passenger’s purse. Station superintendent RK Dutta said, “The instance took place around 4 pm when the lady de-boarded the Ropar passenger mail at platform No. 2. Varinder, the thief, swiftly lifted her purse and walked off. When the complaint was registered with the RPF, CCTV footage was referred to. We soon identified him when he was about to target another passenger. He has been handed over to Ambala division police officials.” It seems that months after the installation of CCTV cameras at the Chandigarh railway station, finally its utility is coming to the fore. “Careful electronic surveillance will surely lead to much more strengthened security at the railway station. The passengers should be aware that the station is now under surveillance. So they should not be hesitant in coming up and registering complaints with us,” said RPF Company Commander NK Dubey. |

Bank manager accuses cops of inaction
Chandigarh, September 13 In a letter to the UT Senior Superintendent of Police, Verma said the police has not dealt fairly with the case of alleged assault of his son by his neighbours in Mani Majra, in August
this year. A case of severe manhandling has been rendered into a patty quarrel. “On August 16, Raj Kumar Sharma, residing in a flat below mine, reported that there was seepage in their bathroom. I called a plumber. Sharma asked me to accompany him, which I refused,” he said adding that Sharma and his son trespassed into his residence. Both manhandled my son and gave
him punches. They used abusive language and dragged him out where he was hit against a window, he alleged. “My son bore multiple injury marks on his body and ankle. I called up the police following which ASI Jaiveer Rana
visited our house. He recorded our statements, however, did not hand us the copy. The ASI sent the case to the SDM without waiting for the medical report. The investigating officer had twisted the entire episode and rendered it into an incident of petty quarrel,” the complaint read. He urged the SSP to register an FIR against Raj Kumar Sharma
and his son. Investigating officer, Jaiveer Rana, however, said: “We have already taken preventive measures to avoid any altercation in future. It has been found that the fight was nothing more than a minor altercation and even the X-ray report did not make it a case worth conversion into an FIR.” |
