Auto dealers to be authorised for registration of new vehicles

To save residents from the hassle of queuing up for registration of new vehicles, Mohali would be the among the Punjab cities where the state transport department is all set to introduce the facility of allowing vehicle dealers to issue registration numbers of automobiles.

Rs 5,000 cr turnover in tricity by 2020

The two-day IT conclave — eRevolution-2009 — which concluded here today forecast a turnover of at least Rs 5,000 crore by 2020 in software exports from the tricity. Besides, it also hoped that nearly 14 million jobs would be created in the IT sector by 2020.

Tribunal quashes court martial proceedings against Lt-Gen

Disposing-off one of the first major cases that came up before it, the Armed Forces Tribunal (AFT) has quashed the court martial proceedings against a Lieutenant-General. It was for the first time that an officer of the rank of Lieutenant-General was facing a court martial for corruption.

The Chandigarh traffic police placed under suspension three policemen for letting a vehicle with registration plate violation off the hook without initiating any action against the offender.

2 more test positive

Two more confirmed cases of swine flu were reported at the Government Medical College and Hospital today, taking the number of such patients to 20. A total of 186 patient samples have been taken in the city till now.

Drive to enforce ban on polythene bags
Chandigarh, September 4
To enforce the ban on polythene bags, a drive was conducted in Sectors 35, 42, 43, 44 and the apni mandi in Sector 46 here today. During the course of the checking, 80 kg polythene material was seized from shops in sector markets and the apni mandi. The drive was conducted under the orders of the Deputy Commissioner by the enforcement staff led by Prerna Puri, Sub-Divisional Magistrate (South), and Ashok Kumar, Assistant Commissioner (under training) and nodal officer for polythene ban enforcement.

A clear majority of SOPU party candidates in major departments of PU was the chief contributing factor in success of the SOPU-INSO alliance in the PUCSC election. The PUSU party candidates visibly ruled the science departments of PU but the departments with maximum student strength witnessed the emergence of SOPU candidates as winners.

Kidnapping accused acquitted after 9 years
Panchkula, September 4
Following a long litigation of nine years, Kashmir Singh, the last accused of kidnapping a 17-year-old student of DAV School, was acquitted by the court here today. Four others — Lakhwant Singh, a resident of Kurukshetra and Hajara Singh from Kaithal, Balwant and Manjeet from Pehowa — had already been released in September, 2004.

Husband of ‘suicide’ victim arrested
Panchkula, September 4
The police has arrested husband of Tina, who allegedly committed suicide in her Sector 20 residence here yesterday, following the family of the victim alleging that her husband Sarabjot Singh was harassing her for dowry. The police had registered a case under Section 306 of the IPC.

Two held for stealing jeep
Chandigarh, September 4
The police arrested two persons with a stolen vehicle on Thursday. The police said Avtar Singh of Khuda Ali Sher had reported that Surjit Singh of Moga and Jasbir Singh of Ferozepur had stolen his Mahindra Bolero (CH-03-P-0057). The police conducted a raid and arrested the accused with the jeep. They had allegedly pasted a fake registration number (HR-23-C-7998) on the jeep. A case has been registered.

BA student commits suicide
Chandigarh, September 4
Laxmi, a BA part II student of a private local college, was found hanging at her Sector 29 residence here today. Though the police recovered a suicide note, citing depression as the reason behind the step, the investigators said the note held no one responsible for it.
