Freedom fighter remembered:
Representatives of different political parties and NGOs including city Congress president B.L. Nagpal, Rotary International assistant governor Dr A.R. Talwar, former minister Babu Ram Chawla and others paid tributes to veteran freedom fighter and former minister Chandi Ram Verma on his death anniversary here. Havan Yagya was also organised during the function held in Swami Keshwa Nand Senior Secondary School here today.

Heritage fest in November: The DAV College of Education will host the Zonal Youth and Heritage Festival of Education Zone-C for the colleges affiliated to the Panjab University, principal Dr Venita Singh informed today. The zone comprises 21 colleges of education. The festival has been fixed for November 3-6.

Suvidha camps to be held:
For the convenience of the people and to redress their grievances on the spot, the Barnala district administration has decided to organise two Suvidha camps in Dhanaula and Bhadaur by September 15. Barnala deputy commissioner (DC) Harkesh Singh Sidhu said today that these camps would be organised for preparing ration card, driving licence, vehicle registration certificate, and doing pension-related works and revenue-related works on the spot.

CM extends greetings on Teachers’ Day
: Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today felicitated the teaching fraternity on the occasion of Teachers’ Day. The CM assured the teachers that the state government was making all efforts to create a congenial atmosphere to enable them to discharge their duties in an efficient manner. Meanwhile, Upinderjit Kaur, Education Minister, extended greetings to the teaching fraternity and urged them to infuse noble qualities of discipline among students. 

Badal visits ex-CM at PGI: Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Thursday enquired about the well being of former Chief Minister Harcharn Singh Brar who is convalescing here in the PGI here. Disclosing this here on Thursday, a spokesman of the CM office said the Chief Minister remained with Brar for about 35 minutes in the hospital and wished him a speedy recovery.

Para medics meeting:
A meeting of the Para Medical and Health Employees Coordination Committee (PMHECC) was held here today. State press secretary Shashi Kant also participated in the meeting. The members resolved to start agitation in coming days in support of their demands. Shashi Kant said that the process of election of all units of district Ferozepur had been completed and now the election of PMHECC district unit would be held on September 7. Local unit president Ashok Sachdeva presided over the meet.

Disaster management:
A one day workshop on 'Disaster management’ was organised at the Red Cross Bhavan here today. The workshop, which was organised in two sessions by the state revenue department, rehabilitation and disaster management, was inaugurated by the deputy commissioner Rajat Aggarwal. Dr Tanveer and his team of doctors comprising of Dr Shweta and Dr Gurmeet Singh enlightened the audience on ways and means to effectively give first aid to accident victims.

Debate on terrorism held
: The 9th JK Kate Memorial All-India Inter Public School English Debate was held at the Punjab Public School, Nabha. As many as 28 speakers from 14 public schools of the country participated. The topic of the debate was “Pakistan has become an International Migraine”. Jyotsna Brar, honorary secretary, IPSC, and Principal, Welham Girls’ School, Dehradun, was the chairperson. Major-Gen SH Kulkarni, VSM, GOC 1, Armd Div, was the chief guest. Vivek High School, Chandigarh, lifted the trophy, whereas Welham Girls’ School, Dehradun, was the runner-up. Rai Kapoor of Welhams’, Dehradun, was declared the best speaker, whereas Shayer Majumdar and Saanya Ojha of Vivek High School, Chandigarh, won the second and third positions, respectively.

NGO seeks ticket for Bhadoo
: Several local Congress leaders and volunteers of the Navyug Nirman, an NGO run by Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda’s son-in-law Kunal Bhadoo, on Thursday demanded Congress ticket from Fatehabad for him. Bhadoo has been active in Fatehabad for the past two years in the field of social service. Congress leaders and volunteers of the NGO organised a meeting and decided to support Bhadoo as their candidate. The leaders also decided to send a formal request to the party high command seeking nomination of Bhadoo from Fatehabad.

Road caves in
: A part of the road at Suhant Lok caved in here on Friday. The incident happened when a truck loaded with stones got stuck in a pothole and turned over. It took many hours to take the truck out of the pothole. The police blamed PWD department for its negligence. This is the third incident in the city. A similar had happened at the South City Expressway when a car and a truck went inside the hole. The second incident happened at Civil Lines when the car got stuck in the hole.

Appointed
: Suman Singh Sharma, who was among the first senior BSP leaders to leave the party and join the Congress a few months back, has been appointed state organising secretary of HPCC by state Congress president Phool Chand Mulana. On the occasion, he was given a warm welcome at the local district Congress office by the district unit of the party at its office. The welcome meeting was presided by DCC (Urban) president Pradeep Gautam.

Jammu
Motorcyclist killed
: Rajesh Kumar Sharma (34), an employee of the Services Selection Board (SSB), was killed on the spot after being hit by a truck at Bikram Chowk. The victim, a native of Khawara village in Akhnoor subdivision, was crushed under the front wheel of the truck.H had been putting up in the Barnai area. The police has arrested the truck driver and registered a case. 

Scholarship programme: The NIIT, one of the country’s largest IT education company, announced its 19th Bhavihya Jyoti Scholarship on Friday. NIIT chairman RS Pawar said: “The program rewards meritorious students and graduates desirous of building successful careers in diverse industries that require IT skills,” Pawar said. He said the NIIT had been developing skilled manpower in the state for the past two decades and had so far empowered over 1,50,000 students with its nine centres in the state.

Safaikarmchari Union poll: The Safaikarmchari Union of the Jammu Municipal Corporation is going to elect its president on September 25. Dev Anand Gill and Bhagat Ram are in fray for the post of president. The last date of filling the form is September 15 and withdrawal of application form is September 20. Votes would be caste on September 25 and result be declared on the same day. 

11 bovines rescued: The police rescued 11 bovine animals from a truck in the Jhajjar Kotli area and arrested two persons on Friday. Official sources said truck driver Abdul Rashid of Reasi and conductor Mohammed Billoo of Maralian in RS Pura were trying to smuggle the bovines to Kashmir. 

Medical camp: To help out the residents of the far-off areas of the frontier villages of Samba district, the Jammu-based Tiger Division of the Army on Friday inaugurated a two-day medical camp at Jerara village in the district. The medical camp is being organised by the Sunrise Brigade of the Army that was inaugurated by Brigadier Sanjeev Bajaz, Brigade Commander. A team of doctors will be rendering medical aid to the local residents free of cost. 

PSC interviews: The ABVP on Friday demanded that the Public Service Commission (PSC) should conduct interviews for the posts of lecturer in higher education, which is scheduled in the coming months at Jammu and Srinagar PSC offices, respectively. Suresh Ajay Magotra, state secretary of the ABVP, appealed to the PSC chairman to notify fresh dates to conduct interviews at respective PSC offices to benefit the aspirants. 

Power shutdown: To carry out urgent maintenance work, the power supply to PHE Dhounthly, PHE Peer Kho, Khachi Chowni, Panjtirthi, Karan Nagar, Mohalla Ustad and Ambphalla shall remain suspended from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. on September 6.

Awareness programme:
The three-day tourism awareness programme, held by the Ministry of Tourism, Govt of India and conducted by the J&K Entrepreneurship Development Institute (JKEDI) under the capacity-building scheme, concluded at Ramban on Friday. About 30 participants attending the programme were made aware of the various entrepreneurship schemes launched by the government. District Development Commissioner K.B. Magotra assured full cooperation to the service providers, and promised to consider favourably their request for issuing identity cards to the tourist guides. Tariq Hussain, assistant director, tourism, Batote, assured the participants all help to help explore hidden tourist destinations on a large scale.

State Congress pays tributes to Reddy:
Rich tributes were paid to former Andhra Pradesh Chief MinisterYSR Reddy by senior Congress leaders here today.
The Congress leaders under the chairmanship of Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand passed a condolence resolution paying glowing tributes to YSR Reddy, who was killed in a helicopter crash. A two-minute silence was also observed as a mark of respect to the departed leader. 

CM’s grievance cell opened: The Chief Minister’s grievance cell at the Civil Secretariat was formally inaugurated by Omar Abdullah here on Friday, affording an opportunity to the people to register their complaints and get details about the status and nature of disposal.The cell would be an “effective mechanism” to entertain the complaints of general public, the Chief Minister said The cell, connected with all 120 community information centres (CICs) of each block in the state, would receive the complaints on Internet round the clock. However, requests regarding the employment and transfers would not be entertained, an official spokesman here said. 

GOC meets CM: Lt.-Gen. Bikram Singh, GOC of Srinagar-based 15 Corps, called on Chief Minister Omar Abdullah here on Friday . The matters pertaining to the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir were discussed in the meeting which lasted over half an hour, an official spokesman here said. 

Cong candidate files papers: Naresh Kumar Gupta on Friday filed nomination as a Congress candidate for the state Legislative Council seat before Mohammad Ramzan Secretary, State Legislative Assembly, who is returning officer for byelection to the Legislative Council seat. The nomination would be taken up for scrutiny on Saturday morning, an official spokesman said here. Withdrawal can be made before 3 p.m. on September 7.
