Reddy’s death a national tragedy

The entire nation has been rudely shocked by the sudden and untimely death of Dr Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, who was a charismatic leader and possessed excellent qualities.

He was the man of the masses and reached out to all sections of society. He moved with the poor and the downtrodden and prepared a vision map to uplift the have-nots.

His personality and futuristic vision helped him to capture power in Andhra Pradesh for a second term. Not only the people of Andhra Pradesh but also the entire nation is grieved by his passing away.

The loss has created a vacuum in Andhra politics. He was an excellent role model for other Chief Ministers. The people of Andhra Pradesh should come forward in fulfilling his vision.

In Dr Reddy’s demise, we have lost one of the most popular mass leaders in an accident that was totally avoidable. Earlier, we had lost G M C Balayogi who was the Lok Sabha. SpeakerCharismatic leader Madhavrao Scindia and Punjab Governor Surendra Nath died under similar conditions i.e. flying in bad weather. Now, there will be a court of inquiry by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation.

But the question is what lessons have we learnt from previous accidents and what remedial measures were taken to avoid similar accidents in future. During the last 24 hours, I have been disappointed to hear the responses as to what could have happened or where things could have gone wrong. There are remedial measures that need to be enforced immediately to avoid such tragic mishaps in future.

Dr Reddy’s 1,400-km padayatra throughout Andhra Pradesh to understand the sufferings of the poor people showed his good intentions. He earnestly tried to implement various welfare schemes.

The Rajiv Arogyasri Health Insurance Scheme and the Indiramma Low-cost Housing Project and other development works were close to his heart.

He was a charismatic and a popular leader and no one can replace him in near future. Many leaders have met a similar fate in various chopper accidents. We must frame better safety rules.

VC’s selection should be fair

The editorial “Selecting VCs: Collegium will check political interference” (Sep 3) is apt especially since the government is determined to bring in education reforms. The appointment of VCs should strictly be merit based and VCs should be academicians.

Two safeguards being provided in the Act, that the government cannot insist on the collegium to nominate a particular person and that no salaried government official shall be its member will ensure fairness in selection. The services of IAS officers should be utilised for administrative purposes. Moreover, they are mostly under the influence of politicians.

There should be no compromise with the quality of education in the universities. Such decisions are likely to bring efficiency in the education system.
