Pay your water bills online soon
New Delhi, September 2 The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) is considering a proposal which would enable consumers to pay for water usage through Internet. The proposal has been introduced with the intention to make bill payments simpler for the public, said an official of DJB. Once the project is completed, the consumers will have the privilege of paying their water bills from their homes. “We are looking into the procedure of launching an online system for the payment of bills. It might take some time,” said the spokesperson of DJB. But according to the sources, the project has already been kickstarted and is expected to get over by the beginning of next year. “We have started working on the project and are looking into its various aspects,” said the sources in DJB. At present, the water bills are paid at few assigned post offices and at DJB sub-offices. The people have since long been complaining about the harassment of standing in long queues for submitting their water bills. The DJB has more than 160 lakh consumers in the Capital. The average availability of water is 50 gallons per capita per day through a network of water treatment plants, booster pumping stations and 9,000 km of water mains and distribution system. The DJB has also begun construction of two new water treatment plants at Dwarka and Okhla apart from several other works related to augmenting drinking water supply and improving the sewerage systems. The expected cost of the projects is said to be more than Rs 1,000 crore. Apart from that, it has also initiated the process of installing flow meters to track the exact inflow and outflow of water from various sources to households in order to streamline water distribution across the city and bring about equity. The officials said it would lead to total water accounting and help to track leakages, thefts and wastage. Flow meters are being installed at the water treatment plants and underground reservoirs. |
400 flow meters to improve water supply
New Delhi, September 2 “The project involves designing, installation and commissioning of an online data monitoring system which would help measure the flow, pressure, underground reservoirs (UGR) levels, energy and water quality parameters. These measured parameters will then be transmitted to officials for analysis, through radio telemetry, GSM or other viable technologies. This analysis will help the DJB in better water accounting, checking water losses and expediting emergency response,” said Sanjam Chima, DJB spokesperson. “A total of 400 critical points have been identified at all water treatment plants (WTPs), major underground reservoirs (UGRs) and transmission and distribution networks, where these measurements will be gauged,” she said. So far, all water treatment plants (WTPs) and major underground reservoirs (UGRs) have been covered. The Delhi Jal Board is planning to install one meter per day on the transmission and distribution network. The installation process will be carried out from September 03 to September 11, 2009. |

DUSU Poll
New Delhi, September 2 Rajan Pandey, state secretary for AISA, says, “There is no doubt that this election provides a unique opportunity to AISA. Time and again the code of conduct was violated by NSUI and ABVP and for years no action was taken against them. However, this time round both these parties have been rendered helpless due to the varsity’s zeal in implementing the code of conduct.” Pandey adds, “This election is different because now common students have a right to choose ordinary students and money will not be a deciding factor.” AISA presidential candidate Sunny Singh said recently, “It is high time that the anti-student and muscle-flexing cult of NSUI and ABVP is broken and the varsity administration has taken major steps this time to check their power.” Sunny adds, “The DUSU election system should be reformed by creating effective forums of debate like general body meetings and presidential debates in clusters of colleges to ensure informed choice so that the existing practice of money, glamour, muscle, etc do not dominate the election process.” Other than Sunny Singh for presidential candidate, AISA has fielded Svetlana as vice-president, Vidhi Bharadwaj as secretary and Pawan Kumar as joint secretary. Campaigning is on in full swing for AISA and they have covered most colleges for North and South campus. Robert Rahman Raman, president of the Students Federation of India (SFI), says, “The current DUSU election has taken a new turn since the DU election office decided to strictly implement its own code of conduct. Robert adds, “With the ouster of the NSUI and the ABVP on several DUSU posts, and with a complete ban on the use of printed material, the student community of Delhi University has got an opportunity to experience student politics based on issues, consistent work and organizational spread.” The SFI has fielded Mahaveer Singh Udar for presidential candidate, Mohammad Sirajuddin as vice-president and Natasha Narwal as the joint secretarial candidate. Sources within SFI say that hectic campaigning is on and candidates have visited many colleges and departments. SFI has relied on handmade posters and handouts for its campaign. |
