The famous Urdu couplet, “Kitna hai badnaseeb zafar dafn ke liye, do gaz zameen bhi na mili koo-e-yaar main” (how unlucky is Zafar! For burial, he could not even get two yards of land in the land of his beloved), is a reality at the Sector 25 Christian cemetery which has not seen a burial for the past six months for want of space.

Can illegal construction and rampant building violations dictate a master plan? Perhaps, yes. This is what is happening in case of the draft master plan for the Zirakpur local planning area. Two Class IX boys of a Kendriya Vidyalaya went missing for five days after one of them was allegedly caught with a girl classmate in a toilet of the school. Their parents found them at the Sector 29 market here today.

DIG demoted despite court orders

Despite the high court restraining the Central Government and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) headquarters from demoting a Deputy Inspector-General serving with the force, the officer has been reverted to his earlier rank of Commandant. This has drawn the HC’s ire.

Bhajji fined Rs 3,000
Chandigarh, September 1
Perhaps off-spinner Harbhajan Singh doesn’t realise that “Two wrongs don’t make a right”. He first violated the law by driving his Hummer on the city’s roads without a valid registration number and then tried to cover up the folly by sticking a “paper plate” on the front bumper last night, but this didn’t prevent the police from fining him Rs 3,000 today.

Following the news item “BPL cards for well off, too” published in The Tribune, the district administration has ordered an inquiry into the matter. While Panchkula Deputy Commissioner Pankaj Yadav refused to comment on the issue due to implementation of model code of conduct, sources in the administration said the probe has been ordered to find out the loopholes through which such families managed to get cards meant for poor.

The police arrested an electrician for selling remote-controlled electricity meter tampering boxes here today. Jagir Singh, a resident of Alimajra village, was arrested this morning. A team under DSP Manmohan Singh raided the house of Jagir on a tip off. Officials of the Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) were also a part of the raiding team.

NRI booked for kidnapping girl
Chandigarh, September 1
The police today booked a Singapore-based NRI on the charges of kidnapping minor girl. According to the police,17-year-old victim’s mother, who is residing in Sector 22, filed a compliant with the police, alleging that NRI Ravinder Singh kidnapped her daughter. The police said she had lodged a complaint about her daughter a few days ago, but today suspecting the role of Ravinder behind the disappearance of the girl, she lodged a complaint of kidnapping on which a case had been registered.

PGI ward boy held for duping couple
Chandigarh, September 1
A ward servant of the PGI, Sarbjeet Singh (19), was today arrested by the police for allegedly duping from a Kaithal couple of Rs 5,000 by posing as a doctor, conducting their tests in the hospital.
