Amritsar
Sikh organisations’ demand:
The Shiromani Sikh Council International, Akal Federation, Shiromani Akali Dal (Panch-Pardhani), Khalsa Action Committee lionised Bhai Dilawar Singh, an assassin of former Chief Minister Beant Singh, and urged the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) to display Dilawar’s photograph in the Central Sikh Museum here. Leaders of these organisations, Mohkam Singh, Harpal Singh, Narain Singh and Kanwar Pal Singh, also honoured the family of Dilawar. The honour ceremony was organised at Attari Sahib Gurdwara in the Sultanwind area of the city. The resolutions passed on the occasion urged the SGPC to display photographs of Dilawar in the museum with those of Jinda and Satwant Singh, assassins of Indira Gandhi. A resolution criticised the arrest of hardline Sikh leaders such as Balbir Singh and Daljit Singh and said the arrests were made at the behest of the Dera Sacha Sauda. The resolutions also condemned the Punjab DGP for extension of security cover to the dera for Naam Charcha programmes.

Workshop held: In order to make the general public aware regarding fake notes, a two-day workshop on ‘detection of forged notes’ was organised by RBI, Chandigarh, in collaboration with the Punjab National Bank at its city circle office, here today. Sushil Kaul, Assistant General Manager and OP Verma, Chief Manager, RBI Chandigarh, while speaking on the occasion, said the RBI decided to organise the workshop due to the growing menace of fake notes and close proximity of the region with the Pakistan border. Prominent citizens, police, custom officers, officers of leading banks, railways, post offices, traders etc. participated in the workshop.

Dr Neki honoured: Dr N. S. Neki, Professor of Medicine, Government Medical College and Guru Nanak Dev Hospital, has been selected for the International Medical Excellence Award along with a Certificate of Medical excellence. He would be honoured by Korn Dabbarnasi, former Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand on October 8. The Institute of Economic Studies, a non-profit body, selected him for the award for his contributions in the field of Medical Science.

New HoD: Dr Mridu Manjari, has taken over as head of the department of Pathology on the retirement of Dr S K Kahlon. She has more than 30 years of experience in Pathology with numerous publications to her credit.

Senior citizen honoured:
The management and staff of PKS International School, Balluana, honoured Prof DS Mastana, PESI (retd) for his services to senior citizens, dedicated work in plantation, rural education, social service and blood donation. He has organised blood donation camp many times and has himself donated blood 36 times. A seminar on plants was also organised in which the speakers enlightened students and panchayat members on the value of plants. Speeches by engineer-in-chief (retd) RS Dhillon, principal Amarjit Singh (retd) and Satwant Kaur Deputy DEO (retd) impressed upon the students the importance of the slogan ‘each one, plant one’. Sukhdev Singh, school chairman, thanked guests and participants.

Pulse polio drive: A pulse polio drive would be held from September 13-15 for children in 0 to 5 years age-group. Civil surgeon Neelam Bajaj and district vaccination in-charge Ajit Pal Singh on Monday said besides 16,435 children, kids staying at 170 kilns in the district would also be administered drops.

‘Dandia raas mahotsav’: The Gujrati Welfare Society would be orgnising the ‘dandia raas mahotsav’ from September 1—15 at the Sanatan Dharam Motiram Kanya Mahavidyalaya here. The timings would be 5:30 pm to 7 pm. The society has been organising the 15-day training programme from the past nine years.

4 new veterinary colleges: Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Tuesday sanctioned the opening of four new veterinary colleges in the state to provide quality health care to the livestock. Disclosing this here, an official spokesman said the colleges would be opened in Amritsar, Patiala and other two unrepresented districts in the private sector. He said instructions had been issued that the colleges should be equipped with the latest technology in the field of veterinary education and recruit quality faculty to impart latest education to students.

Anti-rabies campaign: The Punjab government has decided to launch a sustained anti-rabies and sterilisation campaign of stray dogs in cities and villages of the state. According to an official spokesman, it has been decided that this problem can be tackled by launching a coordinated drive by different departments and animal welfare non-government organisations. Local bodies in cities and panchayats in villages will be responsible for this exercise and the Animal Husbandry Department will provide technical and logistic support. He said the drive would be launched on priority in Moga and Ferozepur districts.

De-addiction centre inmates clean bus stand:
Those under treatment in the Red Cross Drug De-addiction Centre here today cleaned public conveniences and other places in the bus stand complex. They also collected garbage from there. Project director of the centre Mohan Sharma, with five staff members and nine drug-addicts, came to the bus stand in the morning and cleaned the complex up to 12.30 pm. Later, they cleaned the road from bus stand to the de-addiction centre. Sharma said the drug-addicts agreed to clean the bus stand complex without hesitation, on condition that nobody there would call them addicts there as they were going for a good cause.

2 HCS officers transferred:
The Haryana government has transferred two HCS officers with immediate effect. Mahavir Kaushik, Secretary, HAFED, Panchkula, has been posted as City Magistrate, Bhiwani, in place of Tilak Raj, who has been posted as General Manager, Irrigation, in the office of the Engineer-in-Chief, PW, Irrigation, against a vacant post.

Jhajjar
Protest against  state govt:
The youth wing of the INLD on Monday carried out a demonstration against the rising unemployment, power and water shortage and price hike. It also burnt an effigy of Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda at Ambedkar chowk here. District president of INLD Om Prakash Beri said the state government had ‘failed’ on all fronts.

Directive for arms holders:
To ensure peaceful Assembly polls in the state, the district police administration has asked all the arms license holders to deposit their arms in the nearest police station or with the authorised arms dealers. SSP Sandeep Khirwar said here on Monday that all arms license holders had been directed to deposit their arms with in a week.

Publicity material  to be removed:
With the announcement of the Assembly elections in the state, Deputy Commissioner Amit Kumar Agarwal on Monday directed the SDMs, tehsildars and other officials to remove all publicity material showing government achievements in their area as per the model code of conduct imposed by the Election Commission.

Nurpur
Man gets 6-month jail:
The court of the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate at Nurpur today convicted Amit Pal of Ladwara in Kangra for negligent driving. He was awarded six-month imprisonment and a penalty of Rs 2,500. The local police had registered a case under various sections of the IPC on August 31, 2002, against the accused when he injured seven persons by hitting them with his Maruti car on the Pathankot-Mandi National Highway at Nagni near here.

8,000 willow clefts seized, 2 held:
The police on Tuesday impounded a truck and seized 8,000 willow clefts at Lakhanpur. Official sources said the consignment was being smuggled to neighbouring Punjab from Kashmir. The police arrested the truck driver, Subhash Chander of Sumuan Patyari, and the conductor, Farooq Ahmed of Ramnagar. A case has been registered.

Rafting Expedition:
A Defence spokesman said Maj-Gen AK Oberoi, General Officer Commanding, Trishul Division, flagged off a rafting expedition from Chilling on Saturday. The team braved the mighty rapids on Zanskar and the Indus over a distance of 30 km to reach Nimu the same day. Lieutenant General VK Chaturvedi, Colonel Commandant Regiment of Artillery, joined the team at Nimu on Sunday. Together they braved freezing and turbulent waters of the Indus to reach Saspol.

Motorcycle expedition: A motorcycle expedition of the Air Force and the Army - Mission Horizon - was flagged off at Zero Road, Turtuk, in Ladakh on Tuesday. The Army and the Air Force had completed 25 years since 1984, operating in Siachen Glacier, known as the highest battlefield in the world, a defence spokesman said. The expedition will cover all passes of Ladakh region, six states and two Union Territories before reaching India Gate, New Delhi, on September 10.
