Electrician held for selling meter-tampering box
Rajpura, September 1 Jagir Singh, a resident of Alimajra village, was arrested this morning. A team under DSP Manmohan Singh raided the house of Jagir on a tip off. Officials of the Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) were also a part of the raiding team. The police confiscated all kinds of gadgets used for making the meter tampering machines from Jagir’s house and booked him under Sections 329 and 420 of the IPC and Section 135 of the Electricity Control Act, 2002. During interrogation, Jagir accepted to have sold 15 such machines, six of which were recovered from various houses at Rajpura. The police and PSEB officials removed meters from the houses where these tampering machines were fixed. However, the police believes that this is just the tip of an iceberg. Jagir may have actually sold many such machines. He had been indulging into this unfair practice for the past two and a half years. Jagir works at some electrical equipment shop in Ambala. He told the police that he used the central car locking system to make the tampering equipment. He inserted a sensor into the meter, which when activated from remote used to stop the meter reading. He used to break open the seal of meters and glue it back in same position to insert sensors. The accused, Jagir, claims that he has sold these equipment as far as Lalru, Zirakpur, Rajpura, Ropar and Bathinda, said SHO Bikramjit Singh Brar. The cost of input per equipment was Rs 500, whereas he sold the same for Rs 4,200. Jagir revealed that he had learnt putting together the set up after repairing old meters. PSEB officials said the owners of the houses in Rajpura, from where the equipment have been recovered, would also face the music. “They would be fined with heavy penalty for meter tampering,” officials said. |

Cops fail to locate missing boy’s parents
Dera Bassi, September 1 As the railway police did not find any clue about his parents here, they took the child to Chandigarh in search of his parents. The police said the Panipat Railway Police today approached with Ritik, who was found at platform number 1 on August 28. The railway police said the child was noticed around 7.30 am after the Bathinda Express left the station. They took him in their possession and asked about his parents. Ritik claimed that his parents were living at Dera Bassi and Chandigarh. The SHO, Dera Bassi, said the boy was confused and he did not know the exact address of his parents. He said Ritik claimed his parents’ name is Sanju and Sunita and he has an elder brother in the family. |

Russian delegates to visit Guru Gobind thermal plant
Ropar, September 1 An official spokesperson said the team would hold discussions also to evolve strategy for research and development in this field. The plant has also achieved a record generation in August that is highest since its inception. In a statement issued today, the plant spokesperson claimed it had generated 933.75 million units (MUs) with the plant load factor (PLF) of 99.61 per cent in August, which was the best ever generation since the inception of the plant. The Oil India Limited has honoured the thermal plant during a function held recently and awarded the plant appreciating its reduction in consumption of furnace oil and lube oils. Also under its environment friendly exercise, the plant authorities would plant 5,000 saplings in green belts. Plant chief engineer NK Saggar congratulated engineers and workers on their achievements. |

Ropar, September 1 Rayat-Bahara Group vice-chairman Gurvinder Singh Bahra said the drive was held with the Indian Army under the 19th university entry scheme for permanent commission in the Indian Army, (July 2010-2011), wherein the students were selected for working with the Army on a set criteria. The RIEIT, 2009, batch students were shortlisted for the placement with the Army in 2011. “This was for the first time that the girl students were shortlisted through the campus recruitment. Forty of our students have got shortlisted, including 23 boys and 17 girls,” he added. |

Fatehgarh Sahib, September 1 The deceased have been identified as Paramjit Singh, a resident of Ramdas Nagar, Sanipur, Sirhind, and Tasleem Maohammad, a resident of Brahman Majra village. Mulepur police station in charge Sukhdev Singh said construction work was on in the house of Ajaib Singh and machines were brought in for cementing the roof. The machines touched the wires above the house while the labourers were fixing the machines on the incomplete rooftop. A case has been registered against house owner Ajaib Singh and also booked contractor Gurmeet Singh. |

Rs 40,000, garments stolen from shop
Fatehgarh Sahib, September 1 Police officials said owner of Fashion Shoppe, Chhajju Ram, complained to the police that Rs 40,000 cash and readymade garments worth Rs 10,000 were stolen from his shop after breaking the windowpanes of the shop. The police has registered a case in this connection. |

Chandigarh, September 1 As the case came up before the Bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Augustine George Masih, UT senior standing counsel Anupam Gupta expressed his displeasure over the way the case was being handled by the police, indicating attempts to bail out an accused in the case. Gupta informed the Bench that accused Bhupinder Singh had also raped the victim in the school for mentally retarded in Sector 32, but the fact was not mentioned in the police challan. Gupta asserted that he found it distressing that the police had proceeded against just two accused in the case, while the victim had repeatedly taken the name of a third person as well. The Bench has now asked for the case diaries. The high court too had earlier expressed dissatisfaction with the way the case was being handled. Justice Ranjit Singh had asserted there were indications that “something is brewing”. Justice Ranjit Singh had also asserted the police had failed to go deep into the matter and ignored vital points mentioned in the first information report, including the assertion that two staff members took the victim to the alleged rapist for consideration still unknown. Taking a solemn view of the gloomy state of affairs while dismissing the pre-arrest bail plea of the accused staffers Kamlesh Rani and another, Justice Ranjit Singh had made the UT Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) personally responsible for the probe. “A direction would go to the IGP, UT, Chandigarh, and the SSP, UT, Chandigarh, to personally look into the case and monitor the investigations in a best possible manner by getting the same conducted under their supervision.” |

Chandigarh, September 1 According to the police, he had allegedly taken money for MRI test, injections and medicine when Ram Nivaj, a Kaithal resident, came to the PGI for his wife’s treatment on August 29. He had advised them to come on the next day but he was not available. The case came to light, when Ram Nivaj, along with his wife, came to the PGI today. This time they found him and subsequently informed security guards, who caught him and handed over to the police immediately. |

City team outperform Goa academy
Chandigarh, September 1 The opening match of the tournament was played between the Chandigarh Football Academy and Brasil Football Academy, Goa. Chandigarh Academy players won the match by 5-0. The Chandigarh players mounted pressure right from the beginning on the Brasil players. It was Gagandeep of Chandigarh Football Academy, who scored first goal for his team off a cross, sent by KC Lal from the right flank in the sixth minute of the play. Rajinder scored the second goal for the Chandigarh Academy in the 20th minute of the play and Gagandeep scored the third goal for the Chandigarh Academy in the 30th minute of the match. Chandigarh lads pumped two more goals after the lemon break. It was Rajinder, who struck in the 47th minute again. KC Lal of Chandigarh Academy scored the fifth goal for his team in the 56th minute and consolidated the tally. Referee Arun cautioned the players several times for indulging in rough play. A total of 16 teams from different parts of the country, including three local teams, are vying for the coveted championship. A brochure was released to mark the occasion. Corporate Cup Match rescheduled for Sept 4 Tribune News Service
Mohali, September 1 The management postponed the match till September 4, which was a rest day and all other matches will be played as per the earlier schedule. Despite the sun coming out in the afternoon, the outfield could not be dried up and was quite soggy when both team captains agreed to call off the play at 6 pm. The players stayed in the hotel for almost full day and visited the stadium in the evening. The cricket fans of the tricity waited all day long to see their favourite stars like Harbhajan Singh, MS Dhoni, RP Singh and Mohd Kaif in action, but could hardly get a chance to meet them. Mona, one of the fans of MS Dhoni, said, “My dreams have come true, I always dreamt of Dhoni and at last my dreams come true today. Though I waited for two hours, still I am happy.” During a meeting of representatives of all three teams, it was decided to reschedule the match for September 4. The PCA management has also taken a decision that the tickets of today’s match would be valid for the match on September 4 between Air India Blue and ITC. Panchkula, September 1 Param Singh of Uttrakhand won the silver medal with a timing of 33 minutes and 39.6 seconds, while G Lakshmanan of Tamil Nadu claimed the third spot with a timing of 34 minutes and 9.94 seconds. In the boys’ under-18 category, Manoj Kumar Munda of Jharkhand claimed the top spot with a timing of 49.86 seconds in the 400 m race, while Lukmal Hakim of Kerela with a timing of 49.91 seconds. Sandeep of Haryana got the third position with a timing of 50.34 seconds. In the same event in the boys’ under-16 category, Lokdeep Kaviraj of West Bengal claimed the top spot with a timing of 50.89 seconds, while Pramod of Gujarat claimed the second spot with a timing of 51.18 seconds. The third spot was bagged by Jiten Mirmu of West Bengal, who took 51.58 seconds. |
