End to Haryana teachers’ stir in sight Chandigarh, August 26 The delegation was led by president of HFUCTO NS Kaushal. Before meeting the Chief Minister, the delegation had an over two-hour meeting with Chief Secretary Dharam Vir, Finance Secretary Ajit Mohan Sharan, Education Secretary Rajan Gupta and Commissioner, Higher Education, Saroj Siwach in the secretariat. However, the deadlock continued. It was only after Hooda categorically told the officers to give whatever was due, whether pay band IV or designations, to the teachers as per the notification issued by the Union Ministry of Human Resources on December 31, 2008, that the tension eased. The meeting between the teachers’ delegation and Hooda lasted about 30 minutes. While officially it was described as a case of “communication gap”, Rajbir Prashar, general secretary of the federation, said their agitation was against the “misreading of the 2008 notification by the bureaucracy”. He said the teachers were not against Hooda, for whom they had high regard. Both Kaushal and Prashar said a meeting of the action committee would be held tomorrow morning at Rohtak, where the next course of action would be decided. They said the federation would go ahead with its plan to hold a rally in Rohtak tomorrow. However, they said, the character of the rally would depend on whether the government would come out with necessary clarifications in writing before the rally starts. |

Tankers sent to Dalits denied water supply
Gurgaon, August 26 Gurgaon deputy commissioner Rajender Kataria said after looking into the matter following a complaint against the panchayat, it was ascertained someone who had been providing water to the Dalits from the village borewell had now refused to continue the supply. “We have provided a water tanker to them and will ensure the regular supply is restored and the community is not discriminated against.” A group of about 50 Dalit villagers had earlier sat on a dharna outside the district administration office last Monday to protest against what they called the “atrocities” inflicted on them by the village panchayat. They claimed the latter was doing so to put pressure on them to withdraw a case being currently heard in the Gurgaon district courts, the whose verdict is expected to be announced on August 28. Inami Lal, an elder in the Dalit community, said the panchayat had even asked owners of shops in the village not to sell grocery to Dalit residents. “The panchayat had cut both the water and power supply to the basti on August 18,” he added. However, the village sarpanch, Pal Singh Pradhan, was not available for comment. The DC has appointed a tehsildar and a local SHO to investigate the matter. |
