Minor raped, one held: The city police have arrested two persons allegedly for exploiting a minor girl sexually, sources confirmed on Wednesday evening. As per the information, the victim had arrived here from Dabwali to meet her sister, who was married in Jammu
Basti. The woman identified as Parminder Kaur allegedly asked the minor girl to accompany her to a physician. She allegedly took her to the first floor of a house in the same locality where a youth allegedly raped her in the presence of a friend identified as Jagdish of village Burj
Muhar. She was medically examined on Tuesday at the Nehru Memorial Civil Hospital. The police had registered a case under Sections 376, 506 and 120B of the
IPC. Parminder Kaur and Gopal have been arrested while Jagdish was not traceable at the moment, sources said.

‘Need for world cyber laws’: It was high time that the Indian government initiates talks with international organisations like the Interpol to bring violators of cyber law to book. This was stated by founder and director, CyWhiz Consulting Private Ltd, Pune, Parneet Kumar, who was here to attend a seminar on cyber law held by the Department of Laws, GND University. Hacking of email and e-banking were some of the notable nature of offences, Kumar said. The Head of the Department, Dr Jaspal Singh, welcomed the participants at the seminar while senior law teacher Rajinder Pawar presented the vote of thanks.

Kisan credit card: A programme for Kisan credit card distribution was organised at Pilibangan in Hanumangarh district by
SBBJ. It was presided over by S. Chaterjee, chief general manager of the bank. As many as 1,500 customers from eight branches of the bank were present at the function. Kisan Mela on Sept 15: The Punjab Agricultural University
(PAU), Ludhiana, will organise a Kisan Mela at its regional station on the Dabwali road,
Bathinda. PAU vice-chancellor Dr M.S. Kang will be the chief guest on the occasion. Dr Gurmeet Singh
Buttar, director of the regional station, said the theme of the Mela is ‘Save environment—save Punjab.’ He further said the improved varieties of different Rabi crops as well as fruit plants recommended by the PAU would be distributed among the growers. The exhibitions would be held by different departments of the PAU as well as other allied concerns. The subject-matter specialists from the PAU would share the research findings with the farmers. Besides, crop experimentation would be held and queries of the farmers would be answered by the experts. The organisers have requested the farmers to take part in the Mela in large numbers.

Traffic marshal scheme: The police has taken an initiative to associate eminent citizens of the state in management of traffic by designating them as traffic marshals. The pilot project would be initially launched in the six major cities, namely Patiala, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Amritsar city, Bathinda and Mohali, on August 28. The initiative has been taken by in the implementation of community policing initiated by DGP PS Gill. A spokesperson said each city was mobilising 15-20 traffic marshals having aptitude for voluntary service.

Superintendent held taking bribe: A team of the Vigilance Bureau on Tuesday arrested Harsharan Singh, superintendent, district welfare office, for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 500 from Swarna Bai in lieu of issuing her a cheque under the Shagun scheme. Surjit Singh
Grewal, SSP, Vigilance Bureau, said Harsharan used to take Rs 2,000 each for every cheque issued under scheme. Swarna had said her daughter got married in 2008. Every time she approached the welfare office, she was denied her due on the one pretext or another though her cheque had been cleared since June, 2009. She paid Rs 500 to the official and the same amount was to be paid on Tuesday. Grewal said 900 cheques had been seized from the office of which 174 cheques were already
signed.

Convict dies due to cardiac arrest: An inmate of the Civil Hospital, Jagir Singh, died due to cardiac arrest here today. A resident of Mehatpur village, Jagir Singh was a convict in a case registered against him under the NDPS Act. He was undergoing a 10-year sentence and was lodged in the jail for the past about four years. Jail Superintendent S.P. Singh said Jagir had been rushed to the Civil Hospital soon after he complained of pain in his chest.
‘Cancel school’s registration’: On a call given by the Sikh Talmail Committee, various Sikh organisations today demanded the cancellation of the registration of Golden Earth Global School in Sangrur over the beating incident involving some Class VII students of the school, who were thrashed for allegedly speaking Punjabi in the class.The members of these organisations lambasted the school authorities and said the school should be closed for such
behaviour.

Liquor seized: The police today seized 114 bottles of illicit liquor that was being smuggled from
Chandigarh. The police officials said a naka was laid near Kharar in the wee hours of today following a tip-off. An Alto car was intervened from which bottles of illicit liquor were recovered. The driver, however, managed to flee. A case has been registered and the police has impounded the vehicle.

Motorcyclist killed: A motorcyclist was killed after being hit by a speeding truck near Kurali Toll Plaza last night. The deceased has been identified as Gurvinder Singh, a resident of
Ropar. Ajaib Singh, who was riding pillion, also received injuries and is admitted to the
PGI. The police has registered a case against the truck driver.

Cop killed in accident: A head constable with the Punjab Police, Kali
Charan, lost his life while crossing the road near police lines today. A native of Khijrabad in
Kharar, Kali Charan was deputed for serving summons in various cases. A PRTC bus coming from Chandigarh and going towards Jallandhar ran over the head constable, who was trying to cross the road. The driver of bus has been booked.

ITBP jawan electrocuted: Constable Jagroop Singh (28) of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), who had come on leave, was electrocuted late last evening at his village, Doblian, falling under Chabal police station. The deceased was trying to repair a fault in a transformer by climbing on it to restore power supply in the village when the incident took place. The police has lodged a report under section 174 of the CrPC. The post-mortem examination was conducted at the Civil Hospital here today.

Body of woman found: An unidentified body of a woman in mid-thirties was found near Dhakoli railway track this afternoon. According to Railway Police sources, they got the information around 2.35 pm that a body of a woman was lying at the railway track. Sources said she was wearing blue and red coloured salwar kameez. The body of the deceased has been kept for identification at the Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi, for 72 hours. An inquest proceeding under Section 174 of the CrPC has been initiated.
