Bar association may soon go dark
New Delhi, August 19 The New Delhi Municipal Corporation of Delhi (NDMC) has proposed to disconnect the electricity supply of the Delhi Bar Association, as the lawyers’ body has not paid its electricity bill since last one decade. The association has around Rs 3.58 crore outstanding electricity bills. The various notices issued by the civic body to the association in this regard in the past had fallen on deaf ears and in the recent notice it has asked the association to make the payment within 15 days, else be ready for action. “Up to May 2009 billing cycle, the Delhi Bar Association has pending electricity bill amounting to Rs 3,58,52,435. They have been asked to work out some concrete solution,” said a senior NDMC official. The corporation said they had arranged meetings with the presidents and other members of the association but none of them turned up. “Two meetings were called in May to resolve the matter but nobody from the association turned up, hence making it difficult for us to take any decision,” said the officer. The civic body is apprehensive about resistance by lawyers and thus wants to resolve the matter without any conflicts. “Earlier when we had tried to take action against the association, the lawyers had threatened to go on strike and protest on the road,” he said. The other people enjoying the privilege of uninterrupted electricity supply without bothering to pay the bills are the members of parliament (MP). There are around 100 MPs who have outstanding electricity dues of around Rs 5 crore, as they have not paid their bills for the last four to five years. “The matter is presently before the court,” said the officer. With a view to resolve all similar disputes of pending electricity charges, the NDMC recently floated a scheme to waive the misuse charges. But for government bodies and organisations, the surcharge on the principle amount would be exempted, provided they pay the total usage charges. |

Blood sold on black market in AIIMS, Safdarjung
New Delhi, August 19 According to police, the black market flourished right under the nose of hospital authorities with the connivance of hospital staff. The accused have been identified as Mahesh Kumar (42), Satish (47), Kailash (42), Gaurav (24), Ankur (19) and security guard Lal Bahadur (47).Lal Bahadur used to lure people to contact the accused for Rs 200 in each case. He acted as a bridge between them and hospital staff. The accused were held yesterday after a complaint by a Ghaziabad resident Vinod Kumar who had come for the treatment of his daughter at AIIMS, but could not arrange blood for her. As the complainant himself got operated recently for an ailment, he was not in a position to give blood. He then came in contact with Mahesh Kumar who promised to arrange blood on payment of Rs 2,000 per unit. However, after receiving the money from the complainant, the accused slipped away from the different gate of the hospital. When Vinod complained to the nearby police post, the accused were caught a few hours later from near Gate No. 1 of Safdarjung Hosptial. During the course of investigation, it was revealed that the security guard Lal Bahadur introduced the complainant to Mahesh Kumar. The security guard was also paid Rs 200 for the deal. According to police, accused Kailash and Mahesh are also involved in the kidney transplant racket and were arrested in 2004 and 2006. According to HGS Dhaliwal, DCP (south), further investigation is on to unearth the nexus among blood bank hospital administration, security staff and Sulabh International’s staff. “Their involvement cannot be ruled out as all these accused were operating right under the nose of the AIIMS and Safdarjung Hospital authorities. Blood bank records of the hospital are being scrutinized and detailed interrogation of the accused is being conducted,” said DCP

Gallantry medal winner DCP Dhaliwal led from front
New Delhi, August 19 Dhaliwal not only partook in the crossfire, but received a bullet that fortunately did not pierce his bullet-proof vest. However, after the operation ended, the DCP gave the credit to his team without a hint of his dare devilry to mediapersons. “It was a team work and my men made it possible,” DCP Dhaliwal said. Bunty Gang or the Bikers Gang committed murders and robberies at will on Delhi roads. The gang created panic among Capital residents, which was not being witnessed for around four months. Massive manhunt, supervised by Dhaliwal, bore fruit when the police team cornered Bunty and his associate Rajesh Sharma at a house in Jaitpur in the wee hours of August 25, 2008. Greeted by an indiscriminate firing by the criminals, Dhaliwal ordered firing and led the team from the front that entered the room while the crossfiring was on. He fired three bullets and one hit him on his mid-riff area that got embedded in his bullet-proof jacket that saved his life. After a sustained gun battle, the gangsters could be neutralised and arms were seized from the hideout. Fond of reading and public speaking, this 1997 batch IPS officer has the distinction of being the first police officer in India to be selected as “Young Achiever” by the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) for interaction with the then British prime minister Tony Blair. As former Superintendent of Police, Special Crime, Chandigarh, he also obtained the first ISO 9001:2000 certification for an Investigation and Detection Unit. |
Abu does not want video-conferencing
New Delhi, August 19 He requested the CMM to give him a fair trial. The video-conferencing system would create confusion. Moreover, he would not be able to discuss points with his lawyer personally, he added. It was decided a few days back to make Salem appear in the court for the hearing of his cases through video-conferencing. This was done as the court felt that the presence of the don could threaten the witnesses and they could change their statements. However, Abu Salem did not want video conferencing. His counsel Arvind Shukla told the court, “According to the police, Salem is a good prisoner. His behaviour is calm and the records show that he had never entered into a fight with the other prisoners, so how can he threaten the witnesses.” Moreover, the extradition treaty also says that Salem should be treated as a common man and no special treatment should be given to him. He should have a fair trial, pleaded Arvind Shukla. On that basis, the CMM, Kaveri Baweja has asked the prosecution to give its version on video conferencing that will be discussed on August 27 along with the arguments on his bail application. |
