Hospital mgmt lapse leaves patient dead
Jalandhar, July 7 Receiving the news, the hospital authorities reportedly got panicky and rushed him to the emergency but could not revive him due to severe head injuries. According to attendants of some other patients in the same ward, Ram Swarup, undergoing treatment for cancer, was uneducated and could not read the instructions and signboard on the door of the duct. Moreover, there was no family member attending to the patient at the time of the incident, revealed another attendant. The family members of patients admitted to the ward complained that neither ward boys or girls nor the supervising staff are seen in the wards located on different floors of the hospital building after 5 pm. The staff nurses and the doctors, on duty, could also be found skipping their duties putting the patients and their attendants in lurch in case when some patients complain problems. The patient was admitted in the general ward located on the second floor of the hospital building. Ironically, this was the only unlocked duct on the floor which failed to draw the attention of the floor supervisor. Ganga Ram, son of the deceased, said his father died due to the negligence of hospital authorities. When contacted, Dr Ashok Nayyar, medical superintendent (MS), admitted that the patient died due to the negligence of hospital staff. He, however, claimed that the patient was not accompanied by his attendant when the accident occurred. He claimed that the door of the duct was unlocked and considering it the door of a washroom the patient opened it and stepped to fatal fall. “We tried our best to save him after the accident but it proved a futile exercise,” claimed Dr Nayyar. The medical superintendent, however, that an enquiry would be conducted into the incident to fix the responsibility of erring person. He claimed that floor supervisor and nursing sisters were supposed to look after the ducts. |
Punjab’s pilot project not ready to set off
Jalandhar, July 7 Signing of an agreement for availing consultancy services in this regard has taken more than six months. While modalities of the project and plans to tie up with Delhi-based Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Services Ltd (ILFS) were being discussed since January this year, an agreement to this effect has been signed by the Punjab government just a week back. Now, the firm has asked for another six months’ time to prepare a detailed project report (DPR). If the report gets ready as per the plans by New Year, more time would be required for issuing of tenders, finalising of executing agency and installation of machines required for the treatment. The scope of work under the project includes door-to-door collection of garbage, its transportation to the proposed 15-acre treatment site at Jamsher village for production of manure, refuse-derived fuel and power from the waste. The proposal includes setting up of a scientific disposal site at Hoshiarpur, the land for which is being offered by the municipal committee there. Giving details, MC Commissioner Vinay Bublani said the MC would not have to bear any cost on the whole project. “The company that takes the contract for the execution of the project would bear the consultancy charges. Our job is only to offer them the land and garbage. The teams of our consultant are already on job visiting the Sabzi Mandi area and collecting samples from different areas,” he said. SE (Operations and Maintenance) V.P. Singh said Punjab had been divided into seven clusters under the scheme. These include Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Patiala, Ferozepore, Bathinda, Pathankot and Ropar. The areas to be covered for the purpose in Jalandhar cluster include Jalandhar city, Nakodar, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala and Nawanshahr. While the city was producing nearly 450 metric tonnes of solid waste daily, the total collection per day from the cluster was expected to go beyond 700 metric tonnes, the SE said. While there is already a solid waste plant being run in an agreement with the MC at Wariana village, its capacity is being put at 150 metric tonnes of waste a day. Since there is a huge gap in the capacity and volume of waste being supplied there, the piles are growing wider and taller each day with area causing immense problem to farmers and residents there. |

IFFCO lauds Union Budget
Jalandhar, July 7 Welcoming the Budget, Dr U.S.
Awasthi, Managing Director of IFFCO, claimed that the government has shifted fertiliser subsidy from “product pricing regime to nutrient-based subsidy and gave subsidy directly to the farmers”. In a press note, Dr Awasthi said IFFCO’s concept had found a place in the Budget. The IFFCO had been trying to draw attention of all concerned towards the depleting soil health and need to use restoration of secondary and micro nutrient status of the soil, he claimed. He claimed to have emphasised time and again in the past that subsidy should be disbursed directly to the farmers instead of routing the same though the manufactures. He said the move would help in soil rejuvenation and increasing farmers’ yield. |
