Jalandhar, May 19
Undergoing trial in a murder case and lodged in the Jalandhar Central Jail, 23-year-old Inderjit Singh has not let his aspirations die. An arts graduate from Lyallpur Khalsa College, he is now appearing for the MA-I (political science) examination as a private student at DAV College.

He sat in the examination centre to write the paper as one of his leg was chained and held by a policeman sitting right next to him. Outside, there were three more guards to ensure that he did not try to escape.

Inderjit came in a police vehicle with one hand cuffed and a book in the other hand. He came dressed up in a spotlessly white full-sleeves designer shirt, tight jeans and leather shoes. With his hair gelled, fresh shave done and having applied talcum and a strong perfume, he seemed quite lively and in tune with the modern times.

Without the slightest hang-up showing on his face, he met a couple of his friends before the examination began and enjoyed a cold drink with them near the canteen. It being his last paper of the year today and one of his last chance to freak out on the college campus under the present circumstances, he perhaps wanted to make the most of it.

Talking to The Tribune, Inderjit said his friends lend a helping hand to him by providing him notes and books in the jail. They had been inspiring him to continue his studies and not waste time thinking of the past incidents. An average student, he said he had attained 55 per cent marks in BA.

A spirited young guy, he said, “If I am absolved of all charges and set free, I will move abroad to settle down and start a new life.” Asked if he had a provision for light in the jail, he said it was not a problem at all. “I also have plenty of time, but I sometimes find it difficult to concentrate.

I am also a bit worried about my mother who is all by herself at home. I have lost my dad and I am her only son,” he seemed a bit down for a moment.

Inderjit said he was good at penning verses. “I also do a bit of diary writing,” he said. His invigilator said unlike other boys at the centre, he did not even look around for a second or disturb anyone. He rather concentrated on his own paper and came out right after the final bell rang.
