Poll Code Violation
Jalandhar, May 12 The chairman of the model code of conduct committee-cum-ADC Gen Gurpreet Singh Khera said the march had been shot on video and the assistant returning officer of the area had been asked to come with a complete detail on who all were there in the march. “I have been told that there were some Congress people involved,” he said without naming anyone. He, however, said the incident was a clear violation of the code as there could be no campaign today, just a day before the polls. Campaigning should have ended yesterday at 5 pm, he added. The Jalandhar (North) BJP MLA K.D. Bhandari said he got the information from the shopkeepers around noon. He said he immediately rang up the election officers who went to the site and recorded the march on camera. He said he also immediately corresponded with the SAD office to inform them of the incident who too then lodged a complaint. He said he was told that both Kaypee and Henry had been caught on camera by the election team. Henry, when contacted, said there was no restriction on a march carried out without any loudspeakers. “I and Kaypee had gone there with a few supporters to carry out a door-to-door campaign. People just kept on following us and the gathering started growing, making it appear like a march,” he tried to clarify. Meanwhile, the ADC office continued to receive numerous complaints through the day. Khera said most of the complaints were found to be frivolous or bogus. “We had sent our teams at all places to ascertain them”, Gurpreet Singh Khera said. The officer added that he had received the reply from Lovely Professional University on the use of buses for a SAD rally on Saturday. “They have feigned ignorance by saying that the campus was closed on Saturday and Sunday and they were not aware as to where the buses had gone. But I have already marked the complaint to the DTO and asked him to take action under the Motor Vehicles Act since the vehicle could not be used for such a
purpose,” he said. |

Students urge people to vote
Jalandhar, May 12 Students of classes V to VIII along with their teachers visited the nearby surrounding areas and asked the passersby and the locals to cast their votes and play an active role in the formation of the next government at the Centre. Holding placards in their hands, the students asked the voters to exercise their right to vote and turn up in large numbers. Principal of the school Ranjana Sud maintained that the initiative was taken after certain parts of the country saw less voter turnout. “A majority of the people usually prefer enjoying the holiday by going for an outing instead of casting their votes. And we felt that children are the best medium of propagating this message. We received a good response as the locals listened patiently to their message,” she added. Similarly, certain other educational institutions, including Police DAV Public School, CT Public School, colleges, St Soldier Institutions and Guru Nanak Dev University, Regional Campus, Ladhewali, too propagated the message of exercising the right to vote. Harshdeep Kaur, a retired teacher, maintained that over the period of time voters had become less responsible towards their rights. “Earlier, the youth and elderly used to turn out in large numbers to cast votes, which was a sign of healthy democracy. However, the initiative taken by the students is indeed commendable as it will awaken the voters,” she added. |
Outsiders directed to leave district
Jalandhar, May 12 Using his powers under section 144 of the CrPC, Pannu directed all the persons, supporters and relatives of the candidates who were campaigning for them to leave the Jalandhar constituency. Army, paramilitary personnel and policemen in uniform have been excluded from this direction. The direction has been issued on the orders of the Election Commission as their presence may create a law and order problem and adversely affect the smooth voting. |
‘CPI (ML) to make black money public’
Jalandhar, May 12 He said the amount of black money could easily be utilised for the development of hospitals, schools, colleges and roads in the villages. He added that giving the illegally possessed land back to the farmers would be one of his top priorities. Phabwan addressed a rally at his native Phabwan village in the Nurmahal assembly constituency along with activists of the Pendu Mazdoor Union (PMU).

Noormahal Byelection
Jalandhar, May 12 The RO-cum-Chief Administrator of Jalandhar Development Authority Parveen Kumar said the candidate, Lekh Raj, had filed his nomination papers at 3 pm yesterday without having filled two party authorisation forms. The RO said he could have accepted his papers as an Independent candidate but he did not even fulfil the required criterion for the same. “As an independent candidate, he should have had 10 proposers with their signatures in the given column. But he had just one proposer which could have been accepted only if he had filled the party authorisation forms,” he said. This leaves just four candidates in the fray, including Gurbinder Singh Atwal of the Congress, Rajwinder Kaur of the SAD-BJP combine, Hans Raj Pabwan of the CPI (ML), and Harbans Singh of the CPI (M). |
