People Inconvenienced
Jalandhar, April 23 The enthusiasm of the people was seen to be believed as they shoved and jostled to greet and shake hands with the former CM as he went round of the city seeking support for party nominee Mohinder Singh Kaypee. The massive cavalcade of party loyalists started from the house of Kaypee to the District Administrative Complex (DAC) where he filed his nomination papers here today. The cavalcade made a round of the prime locations of the city, including Model Town, Masand Chowk, Guru Nanak Mission Chowk, BMC Chowk up to the DAC. Surrounded by a convoy of decorated vehicles, Kaypee started the road show from Mithapur Road at 11.30 am. Earlier in the morning, Kaypee, along with his wife Suman, went to the Geeta Mandir to seek blessings. Senior Congress leaders, including Gurkanwal Kaur, Chaudhary Jagjit Singh and Tejinder Bittu, also joined
the road show. The fact that the road show was a well planned event was evident from the number of stoppages en route. At Model Town Manoj Arora along with shopkeepers carrying Congress flags garlanded Kaypee with currency note garlands of Rs 1,100 each. Women workers cheered the cavalcade by performing giddha at certain locations. No sooner did the cavalcade reach outside the DAC premises, the party workers virtually came to toes and danced to the beats of band and dhols, leaving no space for commuters, who were left in a tizzy. Party workers had put up special stalls of drinking water, biscuits and garlands. The arrangements for the show started at 7 am and created a messy scene. The premises of Kaypee’s house was blocked to the brim with swanky SUVs, open jeeps, vehicles and cars all decked up with Congress stickers, flags and garlands. At Guru Nanak Mission Chowk and BMC Chowk, the people were made to wait for more than 15 minutes at the light signals. Ajeet Singh, an elderly man, who was struck in the traffic, finally changed his route. “This road show might be an important event for the Congress but it has left us in the lurch,” he said. Rishma Bhatia, an employee, reached office late and fumed at the road show, “This is for the second time that I have changed my route. The political bigwigs often leave the common man stranded during such shows.” Similarly, students returning from schools also had a tough time as the cavalcade reached the DAC in the afternoon. One of the rickshaw drivers who was taking schoolchildren home had to bear the brunt of traffic congestion due to the road show. |
Cong, BSP violate poll code
Jalandhar, April 23 Even as the code stipulates that only four supporters can accompany the candidate to the office of the Returning Officer, more than 15 supporters went along with him. The request of the District Electoral Officer-cum-DC Ajeet Singh Pannu on adhering to the norms remained ignored. Kaypee was accompanied to the office by party chairman of the election committee Capt Amarinder Singh, Congress Legislative Party leader Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, MLA Amarjit Singh Samra, former PPCC president Shamsher Singh Dullo and other party leaders, including Chaudhary Jagjit Singh, Chaudhary Santokh Singh, his son Bikramjit Singh Bittu, Kanwaljit Singh Lally, Avtar Henry, Gurkanwal Kaur, Brij Bhupinder Singh Lally, C.D. Kambhoj, Tejinder Bittu, Arun Walia and Surinder Mahey. Kaypee’s son and wife also accompanied him. Kaypee’s daughter Rupali Kaypee filed papers as the covering candidate. Not just that, party leaders indulged in sloganeering inside the office. Capt Amarinder Singh alighted from his vehicle right outside the RO’s office while the code stipulates that the candidates and his supporters must walk in 100 metres to file their nomination. Even the BSP candidate, Surjit Singh, and his supporters defied the code. Since only four people could accompany him to the office of the RO, the police tried to stop the rest of them. At this, they started indulging in sloganeering against the personnel. Those who accompanied him included Punjab general secretary Sukhwinder Singh Kotli, M.P. Singh Goraya, P.D. Shant, Harmesh Bhag Singh Puri, Ram Saroop Saroya, Ram Kishan Bachhowal, Surjit Singh Parhar and Satish Bharti. |

Know Your Artiste: Sarabjit Cheema
Jalandhar, April 23 He never knew he would sing. Not as a kid when he spent the evenings with his father and grandfather listening to the folk singers gathered at their village open during “khed melas”. Not while rehearsing for bhangra performances in front of the mirror in his room, not when he clandestinely helped a friend to make it big as a professional in the music industry during his college days, not even during the numerous times when he hummed “bolis” to his teammates during practice sessions. But Since the time the truth revealed itself to him through his ustad; puritan, culture lover, man of the masses Sarabjit Cheema has enjoyed every moment of the role. Born and brought up at Cheema Kalan village, Sarabjit pursued his matriculation from Noormahal and then he came to Lyallpur Khalsa College in Jalandhar to study. A lover of sports too, he went on to be the captain of his school hockey team and also pursued other sports like football and athletics. In college, he joined the bhangra team and for five years he participated in competitions winning accolades as the best dancer during many fests. After completing MA in history, he shifted to Canada. Working for a living, he joined the Surrey India Arts Club where he continued his bhangra rehearsals. It was here that a singer for the club, Balraj Singh Bassi, listened to him. “Bhangra and singing had never been more earlier but the ustad expressed faith in me and I started taking regular lessons from him. My family ridiculed me for it but even while working double shift I did not give up riyaaz.” Back to India in 1993, he worked for his first album “Punjabi Parteek”. It bombed. His second, largely publicised album “Munda Patteya Murabbeyan Wala” became a hit with the masses. However, the song Rangla Punjab, released in 1996, which he also considers as his big break, transformed him into a brand. Cheema now churned out hits year after year in his albums and songs like “Putt Jattan Da” (which boasted of the popular song “Billo teri or vekh ke”), “Chandigarh Shehr Di Kudi”, “Kurti”, “Dhol Vajda”, “Lakk Da Hulara”, “Sone Di Chiri” and the latest “Only Folk”. He also did a film “Pind Di Kuri”. “Only Folk” (for which he won the PTC Punjabi music award) is a case in point. Researching for three and a half years for the album, it includes eight tracks - jhoomer, jindua, dhamaal, malwai giddha, giddha, bhangra, sammi and boliya - which are based on various Punjabi folk styles. The best compliment you have recieved? An old lady at Amritsar airport asked me whether I was the one who sang “Paisa jiven nachai janda duniya nacchi jandi aa”. When I answered in the affirmative, she kissed me on the forhead and blessed me for my work. Three things no one knows about you. I am accompanied by none, except my driver, to the places I go. I love simple food and yoga. Nobody takes calls on my mobile phone (with a 13-year old number) except me. Your favourite artist? Gurdas Mann The Punjabi industry lags behind other industries in success. Why? Some of us are not proud enough of our roots and blindly follow the Western culture. Piracy is another big problem. Some people in the rural areas don’t even know about quality because they have always listened to adulterated stuff. Upcoming projects? I am doing a film “Apni Boli Apna Des” with Shveta Tiwari, Upasna Singh, Raj Babbar, Ghuggi and Vivek Shauq in the cast. |
