NIT setting up concrete technology centre
All facilities, such as medical assistance, cafeteria and common room, would be available within the complex, said the director. He added that it would have connectivity with top IT institutes so that the students could have access to lectures being delivered there besides having the facility to interact with their faculty.
Jalandhar, March 24 The centre will focus on developing technologies that could help minimise the use of cement for construction by replacing it with wasteful byproducts of other industries. While the technology will help realtors bring down the construction costs by reducing the use of cement, it would also help in environment protection by putting various wasteful materials to use the disposal of which had always been a problem. Disclosing this, Dr S.P. Singh, dean, infrastructure and planning, NIT, said byproducts such as fly ash from burning of coal in thermal power plants, blast fume slag from iron industry, limestone, China clay and silica fumes could effectively replace cement for construction of buildings. Director of the institute Dr Moin Uddin said more research was required to be carried out on the same line for which a laboratory would be set up. He said the department of science and technology of the central government and various other government agencies were being approached for getting the grants for the purpose. He said a Rs 20-lakh project for developing polymer-based, composite-based and wood-based sports products sanctioned by the Technology Information Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC) under the ministry of science and technology was already being executed. He said a set of nine experts was on the job trying to bridge the technology gap in the sports goods being manufactured in India and abroad and offering better solutions to the sports goods cluster for competing in the international market. |
Political Theatre
Jalandhar, March 24 Dal Khalsa leaders H.S. Dhami, Satnam Singh Paonta Sahib and Kanwarpal Singh said another so called patriot from Gandhi clan was spreading hate and venom in his bid to get Hindu votes just like the Congress under Rajiv Gandhi got while riding on the anti-Sikh wave in 1984. Delivering a stern warning to Varun Gandhi, the Dal Khalsa took the BJP to task for downplaying the Election Commission’s advice not to nominate Varun Gandhi as candidate in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from Pilibhit. In a severe criticism of the SAD, Dal Khalsa leaders asked its leadership to explain as to why they had not objected to such nonsense utterances of its alliance partner candidate so far. “What meaning and relevance does its alliance hold with the BJP when the latter was adamant to field a candidate that has spewed venom against the Sikhs,” they questioned. “Two wrongs can not make one right,” they said, adding, “The BJP cannot justify its decision by arguing that the Congress had fielded Sajjan Kumar and Jagdish Tytler - both allegedly responsible for anti-Sikh massacre.” Meanwhile, Talking to The Tribune on phone, state BJP president Prof Rajendra Bhandari said if Varun had made derogatory remarks against minorities, his party had nothing to do with it. Reiterating stand taken by the BJP on this issue, Prof Bhandari said the terrorism had no connection with any religion. Deputy Chief Minister and SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal during his visit to Jalandhar expressed his ignorance on the issue. |
Stunting to Hollywood
Jalandhar, March 24 Meet Sham Kaushal, the stunt director from Bollywood who paired with Danny Boyle to create wonders worldwide. “I was straightway narrated the script and asked to work on it. And the good thing in this entire episode was that nobody interrupted me in my work,” he said. Although the work on the film began, Kaushal kept wondering as to how a Hollywood director was so keen in a project like this. “One fine day Danny told me that he had seen some of my films like ‘Parzania’, ‘Black Friday’, ‘Krissh’ and ‘Om Shanti Om’ and he was quite impressed.” And then there was no looking back, maintained the stunt director. According to Kaushal, the scene where the children hang with the train and then fall down was very significant as it was a transition device to establish the character. He enacted the scene in front of the children with the help of a toy train. “It was a big responsibility as the children had to perform with a touch of reality. But I made things easy for them by shooting the scene in film city studios with the help of a bus. There was zero risk involved in it and the shot was made ready,” he added. The stunt man was here in connection with the upcoming Punjabi film “Mini Punjab”. Gurdas Mann is in the lead role. “The movie has a sequence where a small girl is trapped in a fire in a flat. And it beautifully complements the movie. The crew has worked hard on this film and we are expecting a grand response,” he said. When asked how much has action changed over the years in the Hindi film industry, came the prompt reply, “Over the years Bollywood has witnessed a positive change in action sequences. With the passage of time story telling has changed, there is no conventional villain, actions have become more real and innovative and this has led to more scope for action in movies,” he said. Is this true that you are once again going to work with Danny Boyle in his upcoming venture? “He smiled and said that yes this is true. In fact Danny promised to work with me in his next movie and we will pair again,” said Kaushal. The man has a Punjabi roots too. Kaushal had his education at Government College, Tanda, and then moved to Mumbai. “Though I found a job in Mumbai, very soon I realised that I am not made for a nine-to-five job. And rest as we know is history. My first film as a stunt director was ‘Prahar’ in 1991. Since then it has been a wonderful journey,” he said smilingly. |
Dejected ‘lover’ throws acid on girl
Jalandhar, March 24 The incident occurred in the Gandhi Nagar locality where Vinod, a migrant labourer, threw acid on a minor girl, Gudiya (14) in a fit of rage as she had rejected his proposals several times. According to the police, families of Vinod and Gudiya were residing in a house of Vijay Kumar, a resident of Shiv Nagar, for the past some time. Over his repeated harassment, the girl’s parents, hailing from Gonda in Uttar Pradesh, complained to the landlord who subsequently asked Vinod’s family to vacate the room. In revenge, Vinod allegedly barged into the house, threw acid on the girl and fled away. After receiving the news, family members of the girl and neighbours assembled and rushed Gudiya to local civil hospital with 20 per cent burn injuries. The condition of the victim is stable. On the complaint of Naresh Kumar, the police has registered a case under sections 307 of the IPC against the boy and has launched a hunt to nab him. |
Khaira: Bibi held rally at dera, violated poll code
Kapurthala, March 24 The rally was organised in support of SAD-BJP candidate Som Parkash who is contesting the elections from the Hoshiarpur parliamentary constituency. BJP candidate Som Parkash and Bibi Jagir Kaur also addressed the rally. Bholath MLA Sukhpal Khaira lodged a complaint in this regard with Kapurthala Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Returning Officer (DRO) Raj Kamal Chaudhary. Khaira alleged that the DRO failed to prevent the election meeting at a religious place despite the fact that the complaint had been faxed to him in the morning. On the other hand, the DRO said Bibi Jagir Kaur had not violated the code as she held the meeting at her residence instead of the religious shrine situated in a dera. The dera and Bibi had separated, he added. |

Strong rishta in the making
Jalandhar, March 24 What do you think is your role in the development of Punjabi cinema? Jimmy: As compared to previous years of Punjabi cinema there is a sea-change in the subject and content of Punjabi films. We are fast heading towards an era of quality films where production is at par with Bollywood films. We need the constant support of the audience for taking Punjabi cinema ahead. “Tera Mera Ki Rishta”
is your second movie together. How was the experience? Kulraj: For me working with Jimmy was quite easy as both of us had worked together in “Mannat” also. It was there that film director Navneet had seen my work and decided to pair us in his debut film. How did you land in
filmdom? Kulraj: After completing my management course from Bangalore University, I went to Mumbai for an acting course. It was there that I got a chance to work with Zee TV Production in its serial “Kareena Kareena”. Shortly after, I was launched in the Punjabi film industry. Which of the characters you play is your favourite? Jimmy: It has to be the character of the super cop in “A Wednesday”. In fact this was the kind of role I was looking forward to. I was able to fully justify the character. The film was an excellent attempt by the director. What are your upcoming projects? Kulraj: The audience will soon see me in “Chintu ji” with Rishi Kapoor and Mastang Mama in May. Any message for the audience? Jimmy: Do watch the film. The film promises a good package of family drama and love. We need the support of the audience. Only then we will be able to make a difference in society. |
