Akriti Case
Parents seek principal’s ouster
Charu Singh
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, April 23
Parents gave full vent to their anger on Thursday at Modern School following class XII student Akriti Bhatia’s death two days back. They are protesting negligence on the school’s part when Akriti suffered a massive asthmatic attack in school. Parents virtually gheraoed the principal and demanded her suspension from the school when they barged into a press meet organized by the school to present its side of the story in a face-saving exercise.

Akriti’s parents accompanied by many more parents walked into the press meet demanding justice. They were shouting at the principal and an altercation broke out between parents and the school authorities.

Principals and the teachers were clearly outnumbered by enraged parents who complained of lack of discipline in school and wanted justice for Akriti. Akriti’s father Bipan Bhatia told The Tribune, “Akriti died due to total negligence on the school’s part. The school has no doctor on its panel and the nurse is a maid. She has no degree and no qualifications for a nurse’s post. She could not handle Akriti and could not medicate her. She failed to provide her with oxygen. The school clinic has no nebulizer and they did not call ambulance. It was my car that took her to hospital and she collapsed on the way.”

Bhatia added, “I want a fair enquiry ordered into this case. The principal should resign or she should be suspended. Proper medical treatment for the children should be available at school and a doctor should be attached on the school panel so that this happens to no other child.”

The Delhi government on Thursday ordered an enquiry into the case.

A class XII student, Vasundhara Sharma said, “When Akriti was unwell, the school made her run up and down to get her leave signed. Even to call home, the school did not provide phone. She rang up from her friend’s cell phone. The school clinic does not have a doctor. The whole thing was very badly handled by the school. The principal is very rude to the students and the school did nothing to help Akriti. We all feel at a loss after this incident.”

A parent S. Sharma said, “The school has handled the situation very badly. The ambulance should have been called immediately. There is total lack of governance.”

Another student, Malivika Sharma, said candidly, “The students are protesting against Goldy who warns that students can’t speak to the press and if they do, they will get rusticated. This incident is shocking and being in school we know what has been going on. There is no doctor here and Goldy does nothing for the school. Students will not let this pass, we will protest.”

Meanwhile, school authorities are not forthcoming. Goldy’s mobile for the most part has been switched off over the past two days and though she made an appearance at the press meet, she beat a hasty retreat. Over 300 students and parents on Wednesday staged a candlelight march outside the school in Akriti’s memory, demanding justice.

Fee Hike
Lease deeds of 3 schools to go
Our Correspondent

Noida, April 23
Hardening its stance, the district administration has recommended cancellation of lease deeds of three schools which have hiked their fee, ignoring administration’s recommendations on the issue.

Noida city magistrate Sanjay Chauhan, after having completed his probe, has recommended to the Noida Authority to cancel the lease deeds of land allotted to the three schools.

The lease deeds of schools can be cancelled if they are found guilty under Section 27(B) of the lease. At the same time, the UP Intermediate Board has been asked to write to the CBSE board to cancel the recognition accorded to the guilty schools.

The state government has also been requested to withdraw the No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the schools in this connection.

The hardened attitude of district administration has reportedly created panic among the administration of the schools concerned. The schools are reported to be thinking of obtaining a stay from the court on administration’s stiff decisions.

According to city magistrate, school managements in their meeting with additional district magistrate O.P. Arya, had given written assurance that they, in no case, would hike the fee more than 25 per cent. Despite this, some schools have hiked the fee indiscriminately.

The city magistrate said nine schools had been found violating their lease deeds with the Noida Authority.

Chauhan has asked the parents of the students of these schools to attach the circulars issued by the schools regarding the fee hike along with their complaints to the administration. They can also attach photocopies of entries made by teachers in the diaries of their wards to this effect, he added.

Sunita to raise women’s issues
Syed Ali Ahmed
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, April 23
Fed up with the system that has no mechanism to prevent people of criminal background from contesting election, Sunita (30), a driver by profession, has jumped into fray from the New Delhi parliamentary constituency.

Sunita, who is contesting on the ticket of United Women Front, said that her purpose to enter politics is to raise the voice of poor women as politicians do not raise their issues in Parliament. A majority of politicians are involved in criminal cases. They just make promises. Once they are voted to power, they do not visit their constituencies, she said.

Most politicians are rich. The poor cannot dare meet them. Politicians of humble background whom people can approach are needed, she said.

Talking to The Tribune, she said that without a woman social worker, problems of society could not be worked out. Crores of youths are unemployed. Corruption is rampant. In such a situation, women leaders can be helpful.

She said that as public-private partnership is the need of the hour to fulfil the government schemes, women partnership in governance is a must to run the government and society smoothly.

“But women are a deprived lot in society. They are not given higher education. Even after 62 years of independence, girls in villages are given only primary education. I belong to a village in district Meerut. I know the pulse of society. If I am voted to power, I will raise woman-specific issues,” Sunita said.

Sunita, who drives a three-wheeler and resides at Malviya Nagar, said that she visits all the villages, slum areas and meets people of posh localities also for vote.

She said that this is her third election. She had contested the first time from Mehrauli and the second time from Greater Kailash.

Hooda campaigns for Bhadana
Karan Dalal shows signs of softening
Ravi S.Singh
Tribune News Service

Palwal, April 23
The much-awaited visit of Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda here to canvass support for the sitting Congress MP Avatar Singh Bhadana who has been re-nominated to contest election from Faridabad parliamentary constituency appeared to have a salutary effect.

There were signs of possible dilution in the stand of local Congress MLA and chairman of the Haryana administrative reforms commission Karan Dala, who had so far refused to support Bhadana.

Addressing a meeting in Punjabi dharamshala here, Karan Dalal said that the Chief Minister was like his elder brother and that he would be amenable to his guidance. He lauded Hooda for the developmental works done by the present government in Palwal.

It was a known fact that the Chief Minister would be visiting Faridabad parliamentary constituency for road shows in several villages of Palwal assembly segment and address public meetings in Palwal and Faridabad cities. Hence, the possible stand of Dalal, being the sitting Congress MLA from Palwal, was in the arc light.

Hooda, who was accompanied by Bhadana, made it known to the public that Bhadana’s victory would be his victory. Without overtly trying to dissuade Dalal from dissident activities against the Congress nominee, he said that both he (Dalal and Bhadana) were dear to him. “They are my two eyes and I leave it to the public to safeguard my body,” he added.

He reminded people that it was his government that gave Palwal the status of a separate district honouring the long-standing demand of the people. He also stressed that the people of the area had special emotional bonding with him and his father late Ranbir Singh.

Bhadana in his speech said that he got the party ticket only because of the blessings of the Chief Minister and also acknowledged the support extended to him by Karan Dalal in the last parliamentary election.

Impleading upon the gathering and Dalal for their support to him in the coming election, he apologised to Dalal for any possible wrong that he may have committed in the past five years.

According to many, although Dalal did not explicitly commit his support to Bhadana, he left enough scope for himself to change his stance. Sources say he would meet his supporters today and tomorrow to finalise his stand on the issue.

Earlier the Chief Minister campaigned for Bhadana at a public meeting organised by the Palwal district Congress committee at Brahmin dharamshala here.

He first garlanded the statue of Parshuram, the deity of the Brahmins.

Later, he went on a road show on a special election rath prepared for him. The road shows were held in more than a dozen villages, including Chandhut, Mindkona, Hathin, Bahin and Bamni Kheda. The show received enthusiastic response from people.

Significantly, apart from Karan Dalal, the Haryana local bodies minister and MLA from NIT Faridabad, A.C. Chaudhary, who has tendered his resignation from the cabinet and the party MLA from Mewla Maharajput, Mahender Pratap, who have refused to support Bhadana in the election, received the Chief Minister at the helipad in village Alawalpur.

The three, however, did not turn up at the public meeting at Brahmin Dharamshala.

Noida residents to challenge construction in green belt
Our Correspondent

Noida, April 23
Residents of Noida’s Sector 15-A have decided to move the Supreme Court against the construction of a wall by the Noida Authority in the green belt area of the city.

Anand Arya and Kannan Jaiswal, residents of Sector-15-A, Noida, said they had decided to file a PIL in the apex court in this connection.

The residents are concerned about construction on the Yamuna bank and the resultant damage to the environment.

The Noida Authority is constructing a boundary wall on the Yamuna bank situated in the green belt area. Residents allege that thousands of trees have been uprooted for this construction.

Residents allege that there are many parks opposite Sector-15-A, like Mansrover Park, Nature Trail, Children Park, Navyug Park, Sumriti Van and Nar Greh Park. Thousands of trees in these parks and in the entire green belt have been uprooted for the construction of this wall. A six-foot deep foundation has been dug up, which is eight-and-half-foot high from the ground level, say the residents.

They further complaint that the construction work is causing dust and noise pollution. About 50-60 metres from the construction site is the Okhla Bird Sanctuary where Siberian birds come in winter. The noise and pollution affects these birds.

According to the guidelines of the union ministry of environment, says Anand Arya, no heavy construction work is allowed within 10 kms of a bird sanctuary.

Murder of wrestler, family solved

Ghaziabad, April 23
The murder of national-level wrestler Praveen Yadav, his wife and sister-and-law was solved with the identification of their bodies that were fished out of a canal, police said today. Three persons accused in the case have been arrested.

Praveen Yadav, 30, his wife Vibha, 25, and sister-in-law Vaishali, 6, of Rohini in Delhi, were allegedly murdered by one of their relatives in a bid to seize their property, the police claimed.

Vaishali and Vibha did not have any brother. So their father Lok Pal’s property was transferred in the name of the two sisters and Praveen .

One of Pal’s relatives Amrik Singh had his eye on the property and, in a bid to acquire it, he conspired to kill Praveen Yadav and the two sisters, the police said.

On April 9, Singh called Praveen Yadav, Vibha and Vaishali to his Mangolpuri residence for dinner and poisoned their food, the police said. He with the help of his two accomplices packed their bodies in a car.

“Amrik and his men travelled with the bodies to Noida, then to Pilakhuwa, followed by Garh, and then to Simbhaoli. When they found the drains in these areas had dried, they headed towards Kithor, located some kilometres away from Simbhaoli, where they found a flowing canal and dumped the three bodies in it,” SP (rural) K.K. Asthana said.

After a case of kidnapping was registered at Rohini police station on Praveen Yadav’s father Dheer Singh’s complaint, the Delhi police arrested Amrik Singh and two others on suspicion.

On April 10, the Simbhaoli police found bodies of two females in the drain. Two days later a man’s body was fished out.

During the course of interrogation, Singh confessed to having murdered Praveen Yadav, Vibha Yadav and Vaishali Yadav.

Batla case: HC for magisterial probe

New Delhi, April 23
Suggesting a magisterial inquiry into the controversial Batla House shootout last year, the Delhi High Court today said the government’s reluctance in conducting the probe “might create suspicion” over the police version in the case.

“The more the government hardens its stand, the more suspicion it might create,” a bench comprising Chief Justice Ajit Prakash Shah and Justice Neeraj Kishan Kaul said.

Additional solicitor general (ASG) Gopal Subramaniam, appearing for the government, opposed the idea, prompting the court to say it was to bring in transparency.

“It is to bring transparency by conducting such an inquiry... This is the minimum protection (against human rights violations),” the court said and asked the solicitor to take instruction from the government on the issue.

Two suspected terrorists and a police inspector were killed on September 18, 2008 last year — a week after serial bombings rocked the capital killing 26 persons.

The court, however, made it clear that the report of the inquiry, if conducted, would not be used for any other proceeding and would be submitted before the NHRC which would decide on further course of action. — IANS

Secundrabad farmers to boycott polls
Our Correspondent

Greater Noida, April 23
Farmers and their families from 15 villages under Chola industrial area in Secundrabad decided on Wednesday to boycott the Lok Sabha elections. The panchayat held in Srai Dula village declared that the farmers would not allow agents or candidates from any party to enter their villages.

They have taken this step to protest against the land compensation rate still valid from the times of UPSIDC days. They are yet to receive the compensation for their lands acquired in 1999 by UPSIDC.

Farmers’ leader Aujit Daula alleged that UPSIDC officials were exploiting farmers who have been struggling for the last 10 years. No representative of any political party ever stepped in the area to enquire about farmers’ problems.

The farmers had launched an agitation for land compensation at par with Noida and Greater Noida rates. UPSDIC had accepted farmers’ demands and a rate of Rs 405 sq mt was agreed upon. But the compensation at that rate has been given to farmers so far.

In the meantime, the current GNIDA rate of compensation has been enhanced to Rs 850 per sq mt.

New Delhi, April 23
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation will extend the existing Line 3 (Dwarka Sector 9- Indraprastha) up to Yamuna Bank, a distance of 2.1 km.

The extended stretch will open for public from May 2.

The first train on the route will start from the newly-opened Yamuna Bank station at 6 am and will go to Dwarka via Indraprastha as per the normal schedule.

The DMRC is opening the Indraprastha-Yamuna Bank section early to provide relief and convenience to Metro commuters in East Delhi, who have to travel to Indraprastha or Shastri Park stations to catch a metro train.

Moreover, the opening of the Yamuna Bank station will ease the pressure on Line-1 (Dilshad Garden-Rithala), as East Delhi passengers can now directly catch the Line-3 train at Yamuna Bank station rather than change trains at Kashmere Gate and Rajiv Chowk to catch it.
