MTNL services continue to be disrupted
New Delhi, May 19 While the top management of the MTNL tried to bring the striking workers across the table for talks, there was disruption of services in some parts of the national Capital. With cables being cut at various places yesterday, the services, including the Internet, were affected in a major way. The MTNL management as a result apologised for the virtual breakdown of the telecom services on its network through advertisements in most of the major newspapers this morning.
While about 4,000 executives are demanding 30 per cent fitment in the new pay scales approved by the government recently as part of the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations, the management has agreed only for pay revision with a fitment benefit of five per cent. MTNL officials were of the view that the 30 per cent increase as recommended by the Sixth Pay Commission was not feasible for the PSU and that the company would not be able to sustain it in the future. They pointed out that MTNL’s salary bill has gone up to Rs 2,200 crore in 2009 from Rs 1,000 crore in 2003. Meanwhile, MTNL employees’ union general secretary V K Tomar said the non-cooperation will continue. Nearly, 8,000 Class I and Class II officials of MTNL in New Delhi and Mumbai have resorted to non-cooperation demanding pay revision.
Sinha said non-cooperation should not result in cutting of cables and pairs. An official of the PSU said that an FIR had been launched for theft of the optical fibres. The optical fibres have been cut in connivance with the executives, he said, adding that by cutting cable and disrupting network, they are only helping the private operators. While the non-cooperation is on, the PSU has restored some of the telephone connections in Delhi.“In some areas it is restored but in many areas it is still affected. Many of the hospitals and other essential services are still not having proper services,” he said. Earlier, MTNL director (Technical) Kuldeep Singh said the PSU had restored the telecom and Internet connections for most of the areas in the national Capital, except some pockets in South Delhi, where normalcy is expected later in the day.
The PSU, which operates in Delhi and Mumbai, had witnessed a severe disruption of telecom and Internet connection yesterday as some of its cables were damaged. |
DPCC chief likely to be changed
New Delhi, May 19 At present, he is president of the DPCC and Rajya Sabha MP. State party chief is appointed for three years. One year is still left in his term. If he is given ministerial berth or some other post in centre, he will have to resign from the DPCC as two posts cannot be held simultaneously, sources said. Agarwal is a seniormost politician among those who represent Delhi in Lok Sabha. He is three-time MP from Chandni Chowk and this time he is from North East Delhi. According to sources, he is lobbying with senior leaders in AICC for getting a ministry. If he is not given that, he will be adjusted in some board or commission. The sources said that party high command would not ignore Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and consult her for the post of new DPCC president. Thus, senior leaders who are angling for the party post have started meeting the Chief Minister. Sources also said that after the result of Lok Sabha elections, Rajya Sabha seat in Delhi has also fallen vacant and lobbying for this position has also started. |
Power cuts leave Delhiites fuming
New Delhi, May 19 “Now that the elections are over none of the politicians would come to see whether we are getting the basic supply of power or not. It is surprising to note the way there was such a smooth flow of electricity during elections,” said Sukrat, a resident of Safdarjung Enclave. The residents of Safdarjung Enclave said the power cuts started around 10.30 last night. “Besides heavy fluctuation, the current was going and coming every fifteen minutes till around midnight when it finally went for around an hour,” said Subhashree, another Safdarjung Enclave resident. Maximum load shedding was reported from the areas of south and west Delhi where power is supplied by the BSES. “Even the inverters gave up after a point. If the power providers could provide information about the planned power cuts beforehand on either their website or through any other medium, people could possibly plan their work accordingly,” said Asmita. Even today as the temperature touched 43 degree, the power cuts started from early afternoon. People said they tried contacting the power providers, but in vein. “We tried to call the customer care of BSES, but their line was busy all the time,” said Rajat. The power providers said the demand of power in the city had gone up to 3,914 mega watt due to the rising heat. “It is a simple case of demand and supply here. The consumption of electricity has increased in the neighbouring states that send electricity to our grids. We can not put burden on the grids beyond their capacity. So, power cut is the only solution,” said an official in the power department. |
