DOWRY MENACE
Faridabad, May 11 Both of them died this morning from the injuries sustained by them. The police registered the case on a complaint of the mother of the deceased, Saheen. The victim, who received severe burns, passed away in local Badshah Khan Hospital. About one-year-old son also received injuries and died. Saheen was married to Amruddin, both natives of village Gulawati in Bulandshahr in western Uttar Pradesh, more than a year ago. The two were married only after Saheen had given birth to two girl children. The first girl child was about three years old and the second about one and a half years old when the marriage was solemnized. Amruddin shifted to Faridabad with his wife and children and found a job. He was residing in Indira Colony. According to her inconsolable mother in the Badshah Khan Hospital, she and her relatives were constrained to arrange the marriage after the birth of the two children. Later, she gave birth to a boy child. As per the version of the mother of the deceased, Amruddin, started pestering her for dowry after the marriage. He demanded Rs 20,000 and a motorcycle. The parents of the deceased arranged for the money. However, Amruddin was enraged as the in-laws did not give the motorcycle. He allegedly started torturing Saheen. The mother, who came to the hospital, complained to the police that Amruddin doused his daughter with kerosene and set her on fire last night. She alleged that though the hospital here referred the case to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi, Amruddin did not take her daughter there. |

Noida, May 11 After the incident, the victim’s in-laws abandoned her body in the hospital and fled. She breathed her last in the hospital. Later, her relatives created a ruckus in the hospital. Lalit had married the victim, Prachi (20), daughter of Prem Gupta, a resident of Meerut on February 15 this year. Prem Gupta said he had spent lakhs on his daughter Prachi’s marriage. He had to taken loan for the purpose. But Prachi’s in-laws allegedly started torturing her soon after her marriage. On Saturday, Prachi’s in-laws had allegedly beaten her brutally. Prem Gupta had even gone to her in-laws house to counsel them. But they allegedly abused and insulted him. Prem Gupta alleged that Prachi’s in-laws had torched her after sprinkling kerosene over her on Sunday morning. Hearing Prachi screaming, some neighbours had tried to save her. He said some one informed him about the incident on phone. He found the house locked. Neighbours told him that Prachi had been admitted to the Karuna Nursing home with 90 per cent burns. Expressway endangers safety of pedestrians
Gurgaon, May 11 Still, no concrete steps have been taken to check the alarming trend. Neither the pedestrians nor the commuters are safe. The heavy traffic on the expressway makes crossing the road an uphill task for the pedestrians. There is a provision for making foot over-bridges and underpasses, but barring a sparingly used underpass near the Hero Honda chowk, none of these has been completed on the Gurgaon side of the toll barrier. In the absence of these, pedestrians are forced to cross the road amidst fast-moving vehicles, which threatens their lives. Over-speeding vehicles also pose a major traffic safety risk, especially near the toll barrier and at intersections. Two-wheeler riders frequently take their vehicles on the flyovers, which leads to collisions. A handful of traffic marshals deputed to stop the two-wheeler riders from moving onto the flyovers are hardly able to serve the desired purpose. Taking note of the increasing risk, the Gurgaon district administration had constituted a committee in March to ensure adherence to safety norms on the expressway. The committee consists of DCP (traffic) Satender Gupta, SDM Gurgaon (north) Shakti Singh, DGM of Haryana State Road Development Corporation R.K. Rathi and representatives of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and its concessionaire DSC Ltd. However, the committee’s maiden report is reportedly lying pending. |
Gupta flays probable hike in stationery prices
New Delhi, May 11 After three days of the elections in Delhi, Gupta has opened war gates against the Congress government. As the president of the Delhi Abhibhawak Mahasangh, Gupta today said the government was planning to make books and stationery costlier by imposing 20 per cent import duty on paper. “The burden of school fee hike was already there and now the government is planning to hike the prices of books. The hike in import duty would automatically result into around 30 per cent increase in the price of stationery,” said Gupta. He added, “The hike in prices would make it difficult for the poor sections to send their children to schools. And the irresponsible Congress-led UPA government would be responsible for the dropouts.” Asking for the reasons of imposing the duty from central government, Gupta said he could see something big cooking. “The government is hiding actual facts and data. There is a nexus operating between the Congress and the private school owners, who are blackmailing the parents,” said Gupta. The Delhi Abhibhawak Mahasangh decided to organise a demonstration at the Jantar Mantar on May 13 against the expected hike. |

B.Com (Hon) seats may go up
New Delhi, May 11 The B.Com programme was introduced four years ago as a modified version of the B.Com (Pass) course by the university. The course can be taken up only if a student scores over 85 per cent marks. A major factor behind this increase in seats is that despite high marks few students could avail themselves of the course. However, the teachers’ union is opposing this criteria as they feel that this is not in best interest of the
students. — TNS |

Heritage lamppost to be restored
New Delhi, May 11 The sandstone structure built in 1929 was part of the city planning by British architect Edwin Landseer Lutyens. “We suspect some conduit or corrosion inside the structure lead to its collapse. I have sent a team of engineers to examine the site and would be able to comment once I get the report,” D.S. Sachdev, director general, Central Public Works Department (CPWD), said. “We maintain these heritage structures regularly especially in the VIP areas. There has been no slack in effort from our side but the cause of its fall is being examined. We will restore it,” said Sachdev. The lamppost at the Vijay Path, close to the presidential palace, was individually crafted by Indian artisans on the designs given by Lutyens. “The two pillars are a part of Lutyens’ design of New Delhi. The fountains, benches, lamps are all a part of the street furniture he envisioned. It is extremely unfortunate that one of the pillars has collapsed but it can be reconstructed as the original designs of the structure are available with the CPWD,” said Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) convener A.G.K.
