City roads in for a revamp
The MC Commissioner today said several busy city roads which have not been covered under either of the two projects, including GEF and that of the PIDB, are likely to get cat eyes for the safety of the night drivers. To take feedback from the residents on the matter, such lights were drilled last evening all around Shastri Chowk and the central verges around it. Bublani added that if the MC would get a positive response, it would go ahead with the task and also get such lights fitted on the road from Namdev Chowk to Circuit House and eventually around other important intersections. The cost of putting such lights along the circumference of one huge roundabout works out to Rs 40,000, he said.
Jalandhar, June 2 Architects from Australian design company Dickson Rothschild were in city yesterday to submit an interim detail project report (DPR) for the same. They met Mayor Rakesh Rathour, Commissioner Vinay Bublani and other senior officials. Of the total 70 roads that are to be beautified under the project, the five roads which have been selected for the first phase are PAP Chowk to PNB Chowk, PNB Chowk to Jail Chowk, BMC Chowk to HMC College Chowk, Parsuram Marg starting from backside of bus stand to Nakodar Chowk and Skylark Chowk to Model Town Market. MC officials said the DPR of Rs 216 crore proposed by the company would be forwarded to the Punjab Infrastructure Development Board (PIDB) in two weeks. The report would further be moved to the WB for the final consent, they said. Once approved, the first phase is likely to take two to three years to get materialised, they said. The project will include laying of footpaths, cycle tracks and separate passages for the movement of non-motorised and motorised vehicles, underground cabling, underground laying of transformers, creating parking facilities, public utilities, bus bays, bus shelters, pedestrian crossings, street lighting, railings, street furniture and landscaping along the entire stretch.
Road beautification
The PIDB and the Department of Local Bodies have jointly decided to upgrade and beautify the urban road network and cityscape of five cities of Punjab, including Jalandhar. As per the plan, 22 major roads across the city, including the GT Road, the old GT Road leading to the Bidhipur crossing, Ladowali Road, Nakodar Road, Kapurthala Road, Pathankot Road, Nehru Garden Road and Gazigulla Road, are likely to be improved with better infrastructure and public facilities. The roads will have a complete change in their design and planning with clean footpaths, parking facilities, public utilities, pedestrian crossings, modern street lighting, railings and landscaping on the
centre verges. Various road safety features are also likely to be added on these roads with provisions of traffic signage, road markings, billboards, crossings, kerb stones and widening of roads, wherever possible. The MC officials have partly done a survey of the roads, noting down the traffic volume, requirements, problems and existing facilities along the
proposed roads for the upgradation plan. |
Mass Rush
Jalandhar, June 2 And Jalandhar being a media hub offers plethora of job avenues to the budding students in various fields. The rising trend of media courses among the students is evident from the fact that nearly every college in the city is offering Journalism and Mass Communication courses at the graduate and the post graduate level. The colleges are also equipped with the state-of-the-art audio-video studios, which provide first hand experience and practical training to the students. Media has indeed swept the world and as a result there is a growing interest among the students especially girls in this subject. Colleges offering Journalism and Mass Communication courses:
“We have witnessed a rising interest among girls in this field. The credit for this trend goes to the electronic media, which has made female journos like Barkha Dutt, Suhasini Haidar and Sagarika Ghose true role models. The students feel motivated with the success rate of media professionals and try to follow the same path”, said Dr Namrata Joshi, professor at GNDU, Regional Campus. While some colleges are offering one-year diploma in journalism, others have introduced it as a vocational subject at the graduate level. The only institution to offer a two-year degree course in Journalism and Mass Communication is Guru Nanak Dev University, Regional Campus. Ladhewali. Dr Sarita Verma, principal of B.D. Arya Girls College, Jalandhar Cantonment, maintained that ever since they introduced mass communication and video production as a vocational subject and diploma course in the college they have witnessed a growing interest among the students. “Jalandhar being a media hub offers a good launching platform for the students as they easily get a chance to work with newspapers, AIR, Doordarshan and even production houses as well. And there are many students who have done exceptionally well in this field,” she added. Dr Namrata added the success rate of the subject could be gauged from the fact that a majority of our students are well placed with good media houses. “Our students are working as journalists with national dailies, news channels, radio jockeys and film directors as well,” she maintained. A former student of GNDU Regional Campus, RJ Roop Kiran Gill working with Radio Mirchi said, “A Masters degree in Journalism and Mass Communication from GNDU, Regional Campus, Ladhewali, gave me exposure pertaining to this field at an early stage. The students should recognise their talent and hone up their skills as per the field. Media promises a great career provided the student is willing enough to work smart”. Her foray into Radio world began with an educational visit to AIR, Jalandhar when the announcer on duty asked her to speak a few lines for a 10-minute radio jingle and it clicked. After that there was no looking back. “I started doing part time job with AIR, Jalandhar and Doordarshan while I was doing my degree. Then came Radio Mirchi, which fulfilled my dream of becoming an RJ,” she added. |
Make ‘camp’ while the sun shines
Jalandhar, June 2 The trend of summer camps, which was confined to metros till some years ago, is now fast picking up with the smaller cities. Even city residents make use of time by sending their children to these summer camps, which promise a great holiday and a learning experience for their children. “Parinde” is one such institute of dance and acting in the Model Town market where children, especially the tiny tots, get together to learn new things. Group owner Rajan Syal said, “We teach table manners, speech clarity, removal of hesitation, concentration, making the best out of waste and memory exercises, besides routine dance and yoga classes. We also focus on moral values.” At the city-based ABC Montessori summer camp, children, aged two years and more, learn different games, basic manners, table etiquettes, play way methods and art and craft activities. “This four-week camp promises a great learning period for the tiny tots who learn things by sharing and practice,” said owner Sandeep Kaur. A majority of the working parents are of the view that summer camps promise a great time for the children as they acquire knowledge and learn new things. Vineeta Sharma, a working mother of two, maintains that a four-hour class at the summer camp, coupled with karate classes in the evening, helps her in running the entire show. “Though I spare time and take my sons for an outing whenever possible, keeping them busy with something creative is very important. And summer camps come in handy for such situations. Moreover, children learn things faster with their peer groups. I won’t mind shelling out Rs 1,000 if it ensures my child’s safety,” she added. Another summer camp being held at Rose Petal Kids Play School is also witnessing a huge rush of learners. “So far we have admitted 28 children. The children are being taught English speaking, drawing, marble painting and karate. Our aim is to hone up the hidden skills of the tiny tots,” says summer camp owner Rosy Sindhu. |
Students yield results sans tuitions
Jalandhar, June 2 Unlike most schools which offer “dummy admission” in classes XI and XII with students sitting at tuition centres for almost the entire day, the management here discouraged the practice and was rather very strict with attendance right from the beginning. The result has been quite encouraging. The school students not only managed to get top ranks in all four streams in class XII in the city but also faired well in competitive examinations. Principal Satwant Gakhal revealed that initially there was much resistance on the insistence on regularity from students and their parents. “All of them came with the logic that the CBSE results were not as important to them as the results of the competitive examinations which they could only get at tuitions,” she discussed But the school administration remained adamant and presented their counter-claim saying, “Tuitions will not give the students enough time for self-study which is all the more important. We insisted that they would not be able to score a good result without getting their basics cleared in classes taken at school.” The principal said, “Perhaps the concept clicked with the parents and the students. Students became very regular at school. This encouraged the teachers to work harder. Extra classes, however, were held only during the summer and winter breaks as is the case in other schools.” Aayush Chhabra of commerce stream, Aseem Syal of the non-medical stream, Anandbir Singh Bath of the medical stream and Upneet Kaur Dhaliwal of the humanities stream attained top ranks with 95.2, 95, 94 and 89.8 per cent,
respectively. At least three students got a good rank in the IIT. Three MGN students, Vipul Khinder, Aseem Sayal and Saurabh Saroya, got the 430th, 654th and 900th ranks, respectively. Vipul Khinder, Saurabh Saroya, Gursimar Singh and Aseem Sayal got the sixth, 35th, 82nd and 98th ranks, respectively. Even in PTU-CET, the 15th, 27th and 29th ranks have gone to Raghav Aggarwal, Aseem Sayal and Ameen Sayal. Most students, including Raghav Aggarwal, said they had not taken any tuitions. |
