Rs 30 lakh loss to PSEB
Tarn Taran, June 30 Gursharan Singh Khehra, Senior Executive Engineer of the sub-urban division, said today some internal fault was said to be the cause of the fire. But according to the farmers of the area, the overloading of the substation is the reason behind the fire. The fire not only affected power supply to 30 villages falling under Naushehra Pannuan substation but also hit power supply of another 50 villages of Brahmpura and Kot Mohammad Khan substations. The supply to Brahmpura and Kot Mohammad Khan could be restored only after five hours. The PSEB employees and residents could control the fire after three hours. The fire brigade, which was brought on the spot on the intervention of Deputy Commissioner Khushi Ram, reached the spot after two hours when the fire was already brought under control. Khehra said in spite of their best efforts, power supply to more than 30 villages could not been restored and he expressed the hope that it would be done before the coming night. As many as 3,000 tubewell connections fall under this substation, besides thousands of domestic connections. |

Linemen on leave, officials say all’s well
Kapurthala, June 30 One of the BSNL consumers, Sardul Singh, told The Tribune that the landline telephone (257172) installed at his residence at Jainpur village had been lying dead for about a fortnight. No lineman had turned up for repair it although he had brought the matter to the notice of the higher authorities. Sardul Singh said his telephone remained out of order almost every now and then. His case is not an isolated one. Several phones of other consumers, falling under the Didwindi exchange, have been out of order for the past some time. A number of persons, especially of Jainpur village, have preferred to surrender their BSNL phones and opt for private telephone connections. Satnam Singh of Jainpur village said he surrendered his BSNL phone as he was fed up with the regular problem in the connection. Since the time he installed a new telephone of a private company, he has been facing no problem, he claimed. While Jalandhar-based DGM S.K. Kataria could not be contacted despite repeated attempts, Kapurthala Executive Engineer Vikas Khanna said several phones falling under the Didwindi exchange became dead a few days back as the telephone wires were damaged due to the construction of a bridge near Mairipur village but now these wires were repaired. Answering a query, he asked this correspondent to contact Sultanpur Lodhi SDO Mahipal. The SDO, when contacted, admitted that several telephones had been out of order as both linemen posted at the Didwindi exchange had been on leave for the past some days. The telephones would be repaired soon after they resumed their duty in the next few days, he added. |

BSNL’s indifference
towards subscribers
Jalandhar, June 30 The BSNL authorities have not cared to get the printer in the duplicate billing section repaired. The printer developed a snag almost two-and-a-half months ago and has accumulated a thick layers of dust since then. Officials in the department have been advising the subscribers, demanding copies of duplicate bills, to surf Internet for downloading the bills from BSNL’s site (www.cellone.in <http://www.cellone.in>). Ashok Kumar, a Urban Estate-based subscriber, complained that he had been approaching the officials for duplicate bills of his mobile phone for the past two months but the officials wash of their hand claiming that the facility for printing out the duplicate bills was not with their section. “They just issue a payment slip and ask to deposit the amount at the cash counter,” he claimed. In this era of technology and that too in the communication sector, a divisional office of the BSNL, claiming to have the largest network in the telecommunication in the country, does not have a facility for getting a print of the mobile phone bills. This reflects the negligent behaviour of the BSNL employees. Another instance of negligence on the part of the department is that it has been delaying the issue of mobile phone bills. The worst affected are the subscribers who have to submit the bills to their offices for reimbursement. Efforts to contact the General Manager, Telecom, Jalandhar, proved futile till late in the evening. |

Showers bring respite to residents, PSEB
Amritsar, June 30 According to rough estimate by the Agriculture Department, the district received about 6 mm rain, while the exact figure will be available only tomorrow. There has been an unprecedented fall in pre-monsoon showers in comparison to last year. The district received close to 10 mm rain this month, while in the corresponding period last year 113 mm rain was recorded. Chief Agriculture Officer Paramjit Singh Sandhu said it was high-intensity rain but for a brief period. The rain did not last more than 20 minutes. However, it quenched the thirst of parched land and people enjoyed the shower. Markets were once again teeming with customers. Scorching heat had taken sheen off from retail and markets. Traders and businessmen had been regretting missing of customers due to high temperature. They said the rain, though for a short duration, prompted the residents to come out of houses for shopping. Experts are of the view that much should not be expected from the short-duration rain as far as agriculture is concerned. For paddy and other crops a steady and prolonged shower is required. The showers increased humidity in environment, which resulted in fall of transpiration, evaporation and will result in lesser loss of water from ground and plants. It would allow water to remain standing Earlier, prolong dry spell resulted in fast evaporation as well as transpiration, which hiked requirement for water. Farmers expect to rejuvenate paddy plants which have their roots intact. Unable to enjoy summer vacation, children along with their families preferred to go for outing in order to enjoy the weather. Rattled with long and frequent power cuts, coupled with searing heat, the families preferred to remain indoors. Batala: As in other parts of the region, Batala too received good rainfall here today. Though the rains provided much needed respite to the residents from the scorching heat, it exposed the preparations of the Municipal Council. Sewage was found overflowing even though the MC started cleaning the system a month ago. |
