Clean Drinking Water
Nawanshahr, June 24 Under it, the DC motivated the Village Health and Sanitation Committees (VHSCs) to utilise the grant for installing reverse osmosis (RO)/filter systems in government schools to improve the quality of drinking water. The VHSCs have also been permitted to use a part of the grant to meet the recurring expenses on the maintenance of these machines. In the first phase, a target of installing RO/filter systems in all the 447 primary schools has been fixed and so far RO systems in 110 rural government primary schools have been installed. As many as 18 schools each in Balachaur and Aur blocks, 46 in Nawanshahr and 28 in Banga block have been covered under the scheme. In the schools where storage tanks had not been installed earlier, 50-litre water tanks have been installed along with the RO/filter system. The remaining schools would also be provided with the facility of RO/filter system to ensure clean drinking water before August 15. The Civil Surgeon has been directed to monitor the implementation of the scheme. “Under the National Rural Health Mission, a grant of Rs 10,000 is being provided to each village which is supposed to be utilised by the Village Health and Sanitation Committee. It has come to my notice that this grant is generally used for holding medical check-up camps or providing free medicines to the needy. In many villages, the amount is not being used at all,” said Gurkirat Kirpal Singh, adding that this information made him consider that the amount should be used for achieving the twin aims of ensuring clean drinking water to schoolchildren as well as to provide them preventive measures against various ailments. |

Forum orders insurance firm to pay up
Hoshiarpur, June 24 The forum further asked the insurance company to pay the litigation expenses of Rs 1,000 to the complainant. Ashutosh stated that he and his wife purchased two joint insurance policies. While on a business tour, he suffered from B/L nasal polyposis and was admitted to Artemis Hospital, Gurgaon, on July 20, 2008. When he submitted a claim for Rs 41,913 of the expenses of the hospital to the insurance company, he was informed that his claim had been repudiated as per the terms and conditions of the policy as it was found that he had been suffering from bronchial asthma, on salmetrol and flucatisone puff BD for the past eight years. The forum held that the doctor who was competent to give anaesthesia did not have sufficient medical knowledge to state that Ashutosh was suffering from bronchial asthma, on salmetrol and flucatisone puff BD for the past eight years. The said evaluation stood rebutted by the consultation notes of Dr Manish Prakash, wherein he has stated that Beary was suffering from bronchial asthma on asthalin puff B/D for the past three-four months. The forum further held that since the insurance company had failed to prove that the complainant was suffering from bronchial asthma, on salmetrol and puff BD for the past eight years, therefore, it had no legal right to repudiate the claim on the ground that the said disease was excluded under clause 4 (4.1) of the insurance policy. Further, it cannot be said there was any concealment of the disease at the time of obtaining the insurance policy, thus the repudiation of claim by the insurance company is illegal. |
