She said that her roll number is 573030 in centre number 213 at Baba Farid Public School. She said that everything has been video-graphed during the exams, which proves her contention. Dr Shaminder Singh Gill, vice-chancellor of the university, said the girl had completely availed the time and there was no wastage at all. Finally, Sainik Sadan project site shifted
Nawanshahr, June 15 The project of setting up a Sainik Sadan, with a view of providing various facilities to ex-servicemen under one roof, has now been shifted from nearby Sloh village to the District Administrative Complex (DAC) here. A land measuring 41 marla has been allotted to the District Sainik Welfare Department for the purpose. The Director, Sainik Welfare Department, Punjab, has also written a letter to the Deputy Commissioner for disposing off the land and incomplete structure of the Sainik Sadan situated at Sloh. In September 2006, the construction work of the Sainik Sadan, proposed to have various facilities like District Sainik Welfare office, office of the Defence Pension Disbursement Officer (DPDO), Sainik Rest House, CSD canteen, ECHS Polyclinic, Sainik Vocational Training Academy, Community Hall, etc, under one roof, was started at Sloh. A land measuring 78 marla was purchased at a cost of Rs 22 lakh and Rs 37 lakh were spent on the construction in the first phase of the project, which was to be completed at a cost of Rs 2 crore. But in 2007, the construction work was suspended as some ex-servicemen organisations started demanding relocation of the Sainik Sadan by raising the issue of distance of the site from the district headquarter, bus stand, railway station, bank etc. “The ex-servicemen, especially old and widows, would have to face a lot of inconvenience in reaching the proposed Sanik Sadan for want of transport facilities, that too, on link roads,” said the activists of the ex-servicemen associations advocating relocation of the Sadan in their memorandum submitted to the higher authorities concerned. Major Yashpal, Deputy Director, Sainik Welfare Department, while divulging details to The Tribune, said the 41 marlas of land in the District Administrative Complex was allotted for the setting up of the Sainik Sadan in February this year. Due to imposition of the model code of conduct during the parliamentary elections, the project could not take off. Now, the maps of the proposed Sainik Sadan were being prepared. In the proposed design, the construction of a basement for providing parking facility and construction of the office of District Sainik Welfare Office on the ground floor, construction of Sainik Vocational Training Academy and Conference Hall on the first and second floor were being planned. The maps and estimates would be sent for the approval of the higher authorities for paving way for sanctioning of funds for undertaking the construction work at the earliest, said the Deputy Director, adding that the efforts had also been initiated for getting the land allotted at the Defence Land, situated near the proposed Sainik Sadan, for setting up ECHS Polyclinic and the CSD canteen. However, some ex-servicemen organisation are expressing apprehensions that by abandoning the incomplete project of construction of the Sainik Sadan at Sloh at this juncture, would further delay the implementation of the idea of providing all facilities to the ex-servicemen and their dependants under one roof for several more years. “Altogether abandonment of the project at Sloh should not be done and the existing structure could be used for setting up the CSD canteen,” argued some ex-servicemen organisations, adding that the under-construction Sainik Sadan at Sloh was not too far to be used as an ultramodern CSD canteen. |

Insurance firm told to pay up
Hoshiarpur, June 15 Apinder Singh had filed a complaint under Section 12 of the Consumers Protection Act alleging the engine of his insured car got damaged as the car got stuck in flood water. He got his car repaired from Hoshiarpur Automobiles on payment of Rs 1,00,685 as repair charges. The insurance company had repudiated his claim on false grounds. The insurance company took the plea that as per terms and conditions of the policy, it was not liable to pay any consequential losses. Surveyor M.L. Mehta & Company made a report that the vehicle suffered a loss to the tune of Rs 11,974, payment of which was made to the dealer and the remaining claim amount was not allowed by the surveyor being the consequential loss to the insured car. The forum held that the surveyor was neither a mechanic nor could be said to be an expert to ascertain the consequential losses to the vehicle. Since the surveyor had not availed the services of an automobile expert to reach the conclusion that the vehicle in question suffered a consequential loss and as per clause 4 (1) of general exceptions of the insurance policy, the balance was not payable, therefore, the report of the expert with regard to the consequential loss caused to the vehicle in question could not stand the test of legal scrutiny, the forum added. |
