MC to seal properties of house tax defaulters
Neeraj Bagga Tribune News Service
Amritsar, June 7 MC Commissioner D.P.S. Kharbanda said as per the rule book they had issued names of defaulters in newspapers and would now seal their properties to eventually put them under the hammer. It may be mentioned here that the SAD-BJP government had waived house tax on purely residential premises in 1997. Another major source of revenue was also abolished by waiving sewerage and water supply bills of houses less than 125 sq yds. Sushant Bhatia, Superintendent, House Tax Department, said there were about 4,000 defaulters of house tax in the city and said the department had made elaborate arrangements to punish them. He said it would be nice if the consumers deposited the tax themselves. Kharbanda said the campaign against the house tax defaulters would be a sustained weekly affair. Besides house tax, the other major sources of revenue of the MC are water and sewerage bills and the building department. |

PTU decisions elicit mixed response from affiliated colleges
Jalandhar, June 7 One of the most vital decisions has been regarding autonomy to the colleges that are either being run by the government or privately for the past 10 or more years and have been granted accreditation by the National Board of Accreditation. Vice-Chancellor Dr Rajneesh Arora said the autonomy would mean giving liberty to the colleges in terms of framing their syllabi and conduct of examination as per the UGC guidelines. He said the degree, however, would be imparted by the PTU. On the fee issue, he said it would depend on the government guidelines or those of the state fee committee set up by the Supreme Court. He added that the colleges could start applying for getting autonomy any moment now. Dr K.N.S. Kang, Director of the Punjab College of Technical Education, Ludhiana, hailed the decision saying that autonomy would strengthen the colleges further. He said the PTU should also consider granting autonomy on deciding the fee structure as per the facilities available. “As per the present fee charges, we are not even able to generate enough funds to pay up our staff,” he rued. Principal-cum-Director of the DAV Institute of Engineering and Technology C.L. Kochher said the autonomy issue perhaps should not be executed hurriedly. “It is an issue that needs to be debated on thoroughly. Different colleges could have different standards of curriculum and setting up of papers and still be able to give the same degree to the students. The system could have so many flaws, which need to be discussed first before going ahead,” he argued. Currently, there are perhaps just three of the total 220 colleges affiliated to the board. The other decisions taken in the meeting including starting six-year integrated courses in engineering colleges for rural students, which would mean direct admission after Class X. The PTU has relied on the pattern being adopted by Punjabi University for its Rampura Phull and other rural campuses. The VC will form a committee on the same and take approvals from the AICTE in this regard. |
